Malibu Mountain

3 sites · RVs, Tents13 acres · Malibu, CA
Welcome to Malibu Mountain, 13 acres of natural land at the crest of the Santa Monica Mountains. Bordered on two sides by national parkland, you will find peace and nature in abundance, along with incredible views across the Conejo Valley to the Topa Topa mountains. The Backbone Trail is at the end of the driveway, with the trailheads to Echo Cliffs (rock climbing) and Sandstone Peak just a few minutes drive up the road. PCH is 12 minutes down the mountain for quick access to Malibu beaches and surf spots. The campsite is extremely private and well-insulated from other humans. There is a small community of homes nearby, the closest being about 1/8 mile away. The neighbors are all up on the mountain for the same reasons- peace, serenity, nature, open space, fresh air, and starry skies. Wake up to watch the sun rise over the hills and the mist burn off in the valley below! We purchased the property for our family as an escape from the noise and hustle of modern life. The property is fully off-grid, and someday we'd love to build a cabin and small farm. It's truly an oasis tucked up in the hills.

There is wooden furniture outside so you can lounge and enjoy the views in front of the kitchen. On the way to the point you will find a double-decker Crown bus and an Airstream that can accommodate campers. At the end of the point there is a 20ft diameter traditional Mongolian yurt complete with wood fire stove and wraparound deck. If you go back up to the central flat pad and continue on down the drive to the left, you will find more beautiful and secluded spots down by the well house. There are a few meadows to explore as well as the ever present view of the ocean. There is plenty of wildlife around the property including deer, bobcats, hawks, owls, ravens, foxes, rabbits, and much more... The best camping near Will Rogers State Beach guide

Overview

About

Named after a Hollywood actor, this sandy shoreline is where locals escape the crowds of nearby Malibu and Santa Monica. With three miles of sand, there’s plenty of space to swim, surf, and sunbathe, or you can explore the coast along the 19-mile South Bay Bicycle Trail. Need more convincing? Will Rogers State Beach has also graced the small screen in several TV shows, including the original Baywatch. There’s no camping at the state park, but campers can head inland to camp in the mountains or check into an RV park in nearby Malibu.

When to go

The sun shines through all four seasons at Will Rogers, so you can enjoy seaside strolls and bike rides even when it’s too cold to swim. Peak season is June through August, and although it’s often quieter than neighboring beaches, it can still get busy. Get there before midday to snag a parking spot, especially on weekends and holidays.

Know before you go

  • Will Rogers State Beach is located along the Pacific Coast Highway (Route 1), between Santa Monica and Malibu in West LA. It’s about a 19-mile or 40-minute drive from downtown LA.
  • Daily parking fees are charged at the state beach. Will Rogers is one of the few California State Parks that does not accept the Annual Day Use Pass.
  • Facilities at Will Rogers State Beach include volleyball courts, a children’s playground, a beachside café, picnic tables, showers, and restrooms. There are lifeguard patrols through summer.
  • There are accessible parking spaces, restrooms, and picnic sites at Will Rogers State beach. Beach wheelchairs are also available.
