1948- On January 1, 1948 a wildcatter named George Hadley, who had been oil prospecting in the valley for 10 years, made the first oil strike in the Cuyama Valley. Richfield Oil Company soon moved in and extracted nearly 300 million barrels of oil in just a few short years. To accommodate an exploding workforce in the early 1950s, the company built the town of New Cuyama, its infrastructure, public buildings, the Cuyama airstrip (L88) and all the industrial structures that are now home to Blue Sky. Richfield Oil Company, later merging with Atlantic Oil Company forming the Atlantic Richfield Oil Company (ARCO), created high-paying jobs, a safe and prosperous community, and developed schools, churches, and recreational areas for the employee-residents.1973- With dwindling production in the area and new discoveries in Alaska, Atlantic-Richfield Oil Company put the town of New Cuyama and its associated infrastructure up for sale. Word of an entire town for sale made its way to entrepreneur, Russell O’Quinn of the Foundation for Airborne Relief (FAR) and Mildred Dotson, a wealthy widow from Tulsa, Oklahoma. The two worked together to acquire the townsite and adjacent land. O’Quinn, an aviator, inventor, and test pilot, aspired to use the New Cuyama airstrip and facilities as a base for humanitarian relief and a non-profit trade school. Though not fully realized, FAR’s primary vision included utilizing converted military aircraft to airlift food and medical supplies to developing countries and global disaster areas. Dotson had loftier goals. Her plans included an 18-hole fly-in golf course, expansion of the Buckhorn Restaurant and Motel, and a 40- to 50-acre lake for amphibious landing and water sports. 1986- Another visionary, Harry Kislevitz, inventor of the popular design tool Colorforms® and founder of Future City/Villages International, sought to develop the site as a “City of Friendship,” an all-electric village of 5,000 earthen homes. The dwellings were to be designed by Nader Khalili, an Iranian-born architect who specialized in earthen structures, worked with NASA on prototypes for lunar homes and received an award from the United Nations for his work towards the development of low cost, sustainable structures for human shelter in impoverished and disaster prone environments. One 628-sq-ft Khalili prototype remains on the property today ("the Cantina"). Khalili went on to form the California Institute for Earth Art and Architecture, Cal-Earth, in Hesperia, CA.1993- Recognizing the transformative potential of clean, solar power and the attractiveness of a rural destination, entrepreneur Mike Nolan worked to develop the Solar Skypark and Big Sky Guest Ranch with Santa Barbara Architect, Barry Berkus. The Sky Park included plans for sixty-five fly-in residences on one-acre lots powered completely from clean, solar energy. The Big Sky Guest Ranch was intended to function as a clubhouse for Skypark residents complete with an equestrian center, a small subsistence farm, pool and plenty of enriching recreational activities. 2012- At the end of 2011, the Zannon Family Foundation made a long-term investment in acquiring the New Cuyama Airport property with the vision of rehabilitating the site to be a low-cost resource for programs and organizations working to advance sustainable living practices and technologies. Plans began soon after towards developing a framework and organization to develop the space and coordinate with prospective programs and institutions. In 2014 Blue Sky Sustainable Living Center ("Blue Sky Center") received 501(c)(3) not-for-profit status, endeavoring to reclaim this property for the public good. Today, Blue Sky Center provides unduplicated services and technical assistance to support small businesses and entrepreneurs as well as the local food system, with core work focused on community research and advocacy led by Cuyamans. That being said, and to maintain the balance here at home, we'd appreciate if you keep your dogs in your car until you get to your site. Our offerings include fresh air and sunshine, amazing night sky, endless views, and plenty of space and privacy to enjoy your moments in nature. You'll find our amenities and activities puposefully sparse here. Upon booking, there are about 5 miles of dirt road on the property that you are welcome to explore on foot or by bicycle. Rustic is the theme here. There is no shower, no wifi, and no electricity available, but you will enjoy your own private spigot and the cellular service is acceptable. For any sites located south of Ballinger Wash, your vehicle length is limited to 22' and no more than 4' overhang from the rear axle, so you don't get stuck in the crossing and block access for others. Towing services are 1-3 hours away. Our Songdog Camps are sparsely scattered atop a 200 foot mesa that looks west over a valley offering stunning desert sunsets and amazing stargazing. These UPPER SITES are NOT OHV friendly, but any of our canyon bottom sites are a great base for your riding adventures up in Ballinger Canyon OHV. We'll be happy to recommend a site for you. **Forest Service law enforcement is actively ticketing unplated OHV on Ballinger Canyon Road. Be sure to know and abide by the laws.** Our friendly cancellation policies vary between 24 hours for simple campsites and 72 hours for our Glamp sites and Group sites. The pond is full of fish (bass, blue gill & sun perch) so don’t forget your fishing poles (catch & release). -We have beautiful 2 stall hot water showers, and three stall restroom including handicap stall. **Cleaned & Sanitized DAILY Our communal kitchen has : a large gas bbq grill, 3 smaller gas grills as well as gas burners & sink. **Cleaned & Sanitized DAILY. There are several counter high prepping tables around the kitchen (please clean up your cooking essentials & food after each meal as everyone shares this space). Campfires - We are an ember free site year round due to wildfire risks & insurance purposes. We do however have propane fire pit rentals for $20 per night. - great for roasting s’mores & the ambience of camping. Please do not cook any meals on them. All cooking is to be done in the communal kitchen area. The summer days can get pretty toasty and the winter nights can get very chilly so check the weather before your stay and plan accordingly. Don’t forget your swim suits as we have soaking troughs for you to cool off in. -Also please note we are located an hour from the nearest town, no stores or gas stations. Please come fully equipped with your own utensils, cooking essentials, food and beverages. We sell ICE!! $5 per 5lb bag. We are off grid, there is no electricity, all lights are battery or solar powered. You may want a flashlight or headlamp for walking around at night. We are a small farm on a 1 acre gated property that has two RV spots and a bar shed. We have full hookups in both sites. Our town is rural but it's still close to HWY 101. We do live on the property, close enough if you need anything but far enough for privacy. We host happy hour for campers who are interested. Although the hours depend on arrival and our availability. We have a common area between the two sites that offered a nice fire pit. Our farm has 3 goats, 2 pot bellied pigs and 20 chickens that lay fresh eggs daily. We LOVE animals but we CANNOT ALLOW PETS. Also, sorry no tent camping. RV's only. We do not provide bathrooms or showers on site. Don’t have an RV? RENT OURS! We have everything you need for your family. Enjoy a weekend on the farm and glamp in our RV. We have all the amenities of home. Coming to enjoy the area? The property is just a few mins off the 101 freeway on the Central Coast. We are only 15 mins South of Pismo Beach, 30 mins south of San Luis Obispo and an hour North of Santa Barbara. The beach, wineries and shopping are all very close. Both bedrooms are equipped with organic latex mattresses (queen downstairs, full upstairs) and ROKU smart TVs. There is also a TV with basic cable, a VHS player, and classic video games in the living room downstairs. Upstairs we have a projector for watching movies on a big screen. The kitchen is equipped with a full size refrigerator, oven/stove, Nespresso machine with milk frother, blender, waffle maker and fondue pot. We have board games, puzzles, records, 8-track cassettes, VHS tapes, a projector (for VHS or streaming movies), a guitar, keyboard, and a working fireplace. Towels and linens are provided. The washer and dryer cannot be used by guests, but there is a laundromat in the village and another in Frazier Park. Keep in mind this is not a hotel, this is a privately owned cabin in the middle of a National Forest. The water may take a little longer to heat up, the electric heaters might smell a little dusty the first time they are turned on after a long summer, spiders might rebuild their webs less than 24 hours after the space is cleaned, there may be dirt on the outdoor furniture, you might need to wear insect repellant in the summer or shovel the driveway and deck in the winter. If you are looking for a luxury hotel, this is not it, but if you want a fun, comfortable getaway in the mountains, please submit a booking inquiry. You are expected to complete a checkout checklist which includes washing your dishes and putting them away where you found them, making sure all wall heaters are off, etc. Guest access You'll be in walking distance of the PMC Clubhouse which houses a restaurant, bar, recreation room, community swimming pool and hot tub (SUMMER ONLY), tennis courts, and a golf course. If you'd like to use the pool, please send names of all guests so I can register you in advance. There is a fee of $5 per person, per day, for the temporary pool passes to be paid at the pro shop on pickup. We're also close to hiking trails and the village where you'll find the Pine Mountain General Store, Bear Claw Bakery, The Perch, gift shops, and more. During the WINTER months, there is a chance of snow and/or ice on the roads. You will need 4WD/AWD or tire chains on hand. The CA Highway Patrol is often checking cars before allowing access. You may also need to show confirmation of your reservation. We have a snow shovel on the deck in case you need to shovel the driveway or deck. Parking on the street is not allowed. We've had several guests say they grew up on the East coast and know how to drive in snow, only to comment about the curvy, icy road into the forest which is no joke! Even if you are prepared, someone in front of you might not be, so have warm clothes or blankets in the car, a full tank of gas, and some snacks in case you get stuck. Other things to note There is an outdoor security camera on the property. The cabin is not in the middle of nowhere, we have neighbors on all sides. Please be respectful. The wi-fi is pretty reliable but as we are in a rural area, it can be slow and it does go out from time to time. If you absolutely must have internet access guaranteed, this may not be the place for you. No shoes in the house Rules The two overriding rules are 1) Leave the home the way you found it and 2) Respect the privacy and quiet of our neighbors. - NO SHOES IN THE HOUSE - Please do not rearrange the furniture. Use coasters on wood surfaces! Be gentle with everything - most items are vintage. - Basic cleaning up after yourself is expected, including washing your dishes and putting them away. - Trash and recycling must be taken to the transfer site when you check out. - We provide a checkout checklist so you remember to turn all heaters off, lock doors and windows, etc. - Commercial photography/filming is not allowed without permission. Please send details in advance and we will get back to you with the rates for your project. - No outdoor fires of any kind - Quiet hours in PMC are 10pm - 7am - Smoking allowed outside ONLY. Please keep doors and windows closed. If the house smells of smoke after you leave you will lose your deposit to cover the cost of odor removal. Dispose of butts properly - not on the ground. - Pets are not allowed. We had to change our policy after a bad experience. - This is a forest, and bears (and other wildlife) are frequently sighted. No food or trash should be left outside the cabin unattended. All doors and windows need to be closed if you're not in the room. There is an air horn in the downstairs bedroom closet, and whistles near the sliding glass door. If you see a bear, make a lot of noise to scare it away. - Missing items will be deducted from your deposit plus a $50 service fee per item. - NO fireworks or guns of any kind (including BB and paintball) - No parking on the street. If you have a RV please contact me in advance to discuss options. - Any additional guests beyond the number stated in your reservation must be approved in advance. - Your name and contact information will be shared with the Pine Mountain Club Property Owner's Association, in case of emergency or neighbor complaints. - You must provide your email address in advance of your stay. Documents will be sent for you to print out.

This is Glamping at its best! We have two cabins that have kitchens with mini frig, microwaves and sinks. Complimentary coffee and tea as well. Very comfortable queen beds. Each cabin has a living room and table area along with gas fireplaces inside and A/C. Outdoor courtyard area with firepit, picnic tables and string lights to enjoy the days or evenings.  Each cabin sleeps two but both can be rented to sleep four. Both cabins are historic to the area.   All of this is in the center of the Santa Ynez valley close to Los Olivos , Santa Ynez and Solvang. Wine tasting, bike riding and hiking. Great restaurants and wineries within walking distance.

Jessica’s cozy cabin was great for a writing retreat. The kitchen had everything I needed and the fireplace was an excellent touch to wind down each night. I was unable to get the upstairs AC to work, so it was a little warm at night because the heat rises in the A-frame, but other than that there were no hang-ups in the trip. Pine Mountain is such a quaint little area and I left feeling refreshed. Would recommend the waterfall hike and the Bear Claw Bakery.

We had a wonderful stay at Gillespie lodge! The central location makes this camp ideal for coastal adventures. It had plenty of space for our family with three bedrooms, and everything was clean and well maintained. The kitchen was very clean and, while it had minimal supplies, it had everything we needed to prepare our meals. The bathrooms were thoughtfully laid out and worked well for our group. The beds varied a bit in comfort, but everyone slept well and they were all comfortably adequate. This was our third stay here, and Joyce was just as welcoming and kind as always. She is a wonderful host and always makes us feel right at home. We would definitely stay here again and highly recommend this lodge!

Weekend Trip to Freedog Farms @ Cactus Flower Ranch

We just got back from Free Dog Farms and already can't stop talking about it. Sierra and Darin are the absolute best. They make you feel like you've known them for years within the first five minutes. What we loved most is that they actually encourage your dogs to run off leash. Our dog was in full heaven mode the entire trip; running, exploring, living his best life. It's so hard to find places that are truly dog-friendly and not just tolerating your pet. Free Dog Farms is the opposite of that. They LOVE dogs there and it shows. We were treated like family the whole time. No awkward "checkout is at 11" stuff. We're already talking about when we're going back. 10/10 would recommend to anyone!

Weekend Trip to Harmony's Glamping

Harmony's is a truly magical place. It seems to exist in two dimensions at once: rugged and luxurious. The line between them is so thin that, at any given moment, you lose track of which one you're experiencing. One minute, you're taking in the most beautiful, natural shower view you've ever had. The next, you're reminded that the shower is completely open-air and equally accessible to every insect in the surrounding ecosystem. The property itself is serene, pristine, and wonderfully secluded. The hiking trails are marked, but they're not beginner trails. We successfully made the round trip to the waterfall with a 6 and 8 year old, and a small dog. It wasn't easy, but we took our time and made some incredible memories. The host was responsive, available, and helpful from beginning to end. We had a wonderful stay and will absolutely be back.

Weekend Trip to Bakersfield Farm Animals & Pond

Finding this gem so close to home was a weekend getaway dream. The water was essential in the heat, the swings were charming and the stand-up paddle boards were so fun. It was a quiet farm, and the dogs and duck hung out with us the entire time. We got the glamping tent and the bed was comfortable and a clean set-up. Bathroom and shower were great too. Here are the only cons: the dogs can be a bit much, so if you are not a dog lover, maybe look elsewhere. Also, at night, many cockroaches came out (mid June) so you must be ok with bugs, and lastly, the pond fountain stayed on all night, so bring ear plugs because it is very loud!

Harmony was wonderful helping us get situated. This is a fantastic glamping spot. The Hidden Yurt was beautiful and spacious. The description and instructions do a good giving all the details needed to know and what's available. Suggestion - take a photo of instructions as internet is spotty at best. Highly recommended for a unique glamping experience in one of the most beautiful areas of the world.

We loved staying in Lisa's cozy, charmning cabin. We really appreciated the note regarding the history of the land and cabin left on the wall. The cabine had a great amount of amenities, includes a towel warmer, robes, French press and a filtered picture of water. The fireplace was easy to use and worked very well. The shared outside space was serene, with a working water feature and plenty of seating.

Weekend Trip to Harmony's Glamping

We absolutely loved our time at Harmony's camp. The setting of the campground area is absolutely magical, as is the swimming hole at the waterfall. From an amenity and infrastructure standpoint everything is perfectly set up, all of the basics that you would need, and nothing you don't. We stayed in the sunny side dome and thought it was just perfect. Harmony is the consummate host and she is very invested in her guests having a great stay. We will definitely be returning someday!
