While here one can see history come to life by way of our living history ranch and historic home, one of the first homesteads in Des Montes owned by the same family for over 150 years. See firsthand how the unique Acequia system of New Mexico has given life to the surrounding pastoral fields and the agricultural practices of the past still relevant in today’s Taos Valley. For those wanting the best of both worlds, access to in-town activities as well as trail/hiking/river adventures, the Des Montes sites would be the best selection. Close enough to town for groceries and conveniences along with other sought after tourist attractions such as the Taos Pueblo, Taos Plaza and surrounding galleries/shops. In addition, Arroyo Seco and Arroyo Hondo are quaint little villages less than 10 minutes away for for addt'l groceries/market/restaurants options. The John Dunn Recreation Area is also less than 15 minutes drive from the campsites. Despite accessibility to endless activities just minutes away there remains a sense of solitude, space and privacy that one would be hard pressed to find elsewhere. Cerro Chiflo, Cerro Montoso and the Miner's Trail are within driving/hiking distance. For the true adventurer - one will be rewarded with perfect solitude that rejuvenates. 360 degree views from the top that are unparalleled. See the junction of the Rio Colorado and Rio Grande from nearly 8,000ft. Must see to believe. Perfect basecamp for additional adventures in the area. The Miner's Trail is 2.5 miles. Spend the day at the river and watch the stars from top of the mountain at the end of the day. Camp 1 - Dragonfly Mountain Ranch

We absolutely loved this Hipcamp and highly recommend it! This is a true gem in Taos, New Mexico. Don is the most knowledgeable and friendly host. Ask him for the best spots to visit on your trip! Sites 1 and 2 are closer to town and the road to the ski valley, but still very beautiful and private. It was the perfect launching point for our earlier morning start to conquer Wheeler Peak. The toilet was spotless, and the fresh gallon water tank is a great amenity. The firepits are a great touch for those chillier mountain nights! Tio Willy's rest stop and hideout offer access to 300 acres of rugged country on the Taos Plateau. These sites are bordering BLM land with quick access to the Rio Grande River via the John Dunn Bridge Recreation Area. We enjoyed our dip in the river and the scenic drive to reach these sites! We can't wait to come back to Taos and spend more time at these amazing sites!

Dragonfly 2 - The Bonsai

My wife and I, plus our two dogs wanted to explore Taos area for a long weekend. Don and his campsite , Dragonfly 2-Bonsai, was the perfect spot for us in our campervan. Close to town , but still feels private. Great views of the mountains, yet easy access to restaurants, Taos Pueblo, and trails. Don is an amazing host, providing a clean porta-potty, water on site, and great recommendations. His family has owned the land for generations as original homesteaders. He allowed us to go to his other location, Tio Willy’s, to hike and explore. That site is a bit further from town but an amazing views and history. Don’s knowledge and pride for his family’s history, plus his conservation of their property is beautiful to see. And for him to share it with the Hipcamp community is something special! Whenever we visit the area, we will not hesitate to stay with Don!

Really beautiful private site. We stayed as a quick overnight on our way through and would love to come back and spend a few more days. Don was very responsive and the area was quiet and peaceful.
