Also just in Synchronous fireflies, which are fireflies that gather and flash their lights at the same time as part of a mating ritual, are expected to light up the Congaree National Park in May. The lake is owned and managed by Duke Power and is surrounded by three counties: Fairfield, Kershaw, and Lancaster.

This was our third time staying at Outside Inn. We love this campground so much. We stay on our way to & from Florida every winter from Virginia. We stayed for Christmas this time. It’s one if not our favorite place to stay. It’s always so clean & quiet. Very peaceful & everyone is super nice, welcoming & helpful. The animals are the sweetest & it just has that warm, farm life vibe. We look forward to staying again next winter.

Three of us stayed for two below-freezing but delightful November nights at Too Many Oaks (site 1). Our goal was privacy and being in nature, and this location is definitely that! We were the only campers there at the time, but I think it would have been reasonably private even if the other site was also taken. Mike kindly allowed us to use his bathroom and kitchen, which are rustic but way better than washing dishes outside when it’s 29F! He also had plenty of wood for our camp fire. The sky was super dark even with a bright moon, and the stars were spectacular. The location was about a 40 minute pleasant drive through pines and cotton fields to Congaree National Park.
Google Maps tried to navigate us directly to the property off Rt 26. Doesn’t work! Make sure you get the full address - HipCamp didn’t provide it to us. Mike was very fast with responses when we reached out for a last minute booking and then afterward for the address.
If we drive from Philly to Florida again, we’ll definitely stay here!

Very welcoming! We needed some place affordable to put up some hammocks for some sleep on a long drive. Offered water, told us to come knock if we needed anything. For our family the price was right to keep us safe. I wish we had time to stay longer. The stars were beautiful. Yes you can hear the road so if that bothers your sleep easily bring some earplugs.

The campsite was gorgeous and felt very private. The land is beautiful and my hosts were so helpful and gracious. The only piece of information folks might need is that an off-leash dog roamed from a nearby property and sniffed around the campsite on multiple days. Every time I saw the dog in advance, and there were no incidents with my pets as a. I interacted with the dog who was very sweet but I did not feel comfortable introducing my dogs to these dogs just in case. My hosts communicated with me about the issue and did their best to offer solutions. I don't think this would be a showstopper for people without pets at all, and not necessarily even for those with them as long as you are careful.

I would recommend this campground whole heartedly! To be honest, I wasn't expecting other campers here because of how it was listed on the website but I was very pleased with it. The campground was very clean and well-kept. The campsite was the levelest we've stayed at, and we've camped a lot. There's a central commons area for gathering and so many outdoor games accessible for everyone. It's close to Santee State Park if you want to hike longer trails though there is a short one on the property. We also appreciated the doggy poop stations - non-existent in most places we've stayed at. The staff were very welcoming and helpful. Would we stay there again? ... Most definitely without hesitation!

A park worth long leisurely hikes to explore the varying ecosystems. In addition to the many massive trees (the cypress knees!!!), we saw a raccoon climbing a tree and hunting insects, lizards, and a bard owl, even at the end of November. A really lovely place with a mysterious vibe.

Worth a visit!
I hiked 25 miles in the park over 2 days, and then did a kayak float in the rain the third day. Enjoyed seeing the unique landscape. Water was very low though and very little wildlife.

I stayed in IS01. Quick walk in, as are all the sites really. Sites are very close together with a couple trees separating them. There is a pit toilet in the parking lot.

Unique park with miles of boardwalks
I visited Congaree Nat’l Park in October 2021 to walk the boardwalks and explore this unique park. In all honesty, I would not go too far out of your way to visit, but if you’re passing by definitely make the stop and spend an hour exploring.

My visit was shortly after the lightning bug event, so I decided to go in the evening in hopes I would catch some activity. Success! Saw raccoons, otters, owls, squirrels, snakes, blue herons, baby frogs, slugs, snails, dragonflies… and a few fireflies around dusk. I started my hike around 5pm and did a 7.5 mile loop, finishing just as the sun was setting. Boardwalk > Simms > Weston Lake > Oakridge > Simms > Boardwalk. I completed clockwise per the direction of a ranger to prevent getting off trail after a water crossing. I felt the trails were well marked, blazes frequently spaced, which helped me get back on track in a couple spots that were unclear. The mosquitoes were pretty annoying, but as long as I kept moving I was able to escape them. Recommend bringing a map, for use as a fan to keep the mosquitoes at bay, not really needed for navigation.

If you like swamps, snakes, spiders and mosquitoes then this is your park! 😂 To be fair there was a great boardwalk trail and an upland pine forest trail that let us see some cool birds including a Barred Owl, Pileated Woodpecker and a Redheaded Woodpecker. Bring lots of bug spray.

This park was along our road trip route so we decided to stop. We didn’t do too much exploring, the area we did was definitely not the most impressive scenery I have ever looked at, but I bet there are some nice parts of the park for sure and we just didn’t see them on our short trip in.

Congaree offered a unique perspective to swamps and forests in the United States. It is one of the only old growth swamps left. It is more special than people often realize.
