The Hill

My family settled on this plot of land at the turn of the century, moving west in a covered wagon. And aside from a brief time in the late 80's it has been in our family ever since. For most of the 20th century the property was a small farm, grazing cattle and mowed for bailing hay. We are trying to rejuvenate the property and breathing some new life into this old plot of land. Learn more about this land: The Hill, aptly named, is a hilltop that slopes down to a large pond that divides the twenty acre property in two.  With plenty of room to stretch your legs you can enjoy a nature walk. In the evening enjoy the night sky around one of several fire rings, while roasting marshmallows. Easy access and only a quarter mile from the main road. Potential for Noise: MoKan Speedway and Active railroad nearby

The Couple's Cabin is a part of the rustic Cabins of Lakeview by Sue Barn Venue. With its own lake-view porch too, it holds a maximum of 3 guests (including the ladder-accessible loft for one). When not being rented along with a wedding/event, it is offered here for a quiet stay. All the kitchen accessories you may need, comfy bedding, and plush towels, for the full bathroom with shower, have been provided. The little lake is steps from your front door where you can enjoy a little fishing too. The space Along with a well-appointed inside, we have chairs on the front porch for lake viewing and a grill for outdoor cooking too. There is also the Rustic Duck, a wonderful restaurant and art gallery, just a short walk away. Enjoy our little lake! This peaceful countryside cabin has a nice little lake just right for fishing just steps from the front door from which folks have caught catfish, bluegill, crappie, and bass. The Appleton City Lake does not allow swimming. It does not allow boats with motors. However, you could bring a kayak if you wanted. We have a community fire pit and picnic tables too. The grill is electric with pellets. We provide firewood for the pit and pellets for the grill. Guest access We are a little over one mile down a level gravel road and just 3.5 miles total from the small town of Appleton City where we have a little restaurant, Caseys, a very nice little grocery store (closes 7 pm), coffee house (mon-sat 8 am-11 am), and Dollar General (closes 9 pm). I live nearby on the property and am available to greet you when you arrive. Other things to note Appleton City is a small town. If you are coming in late, you may want to stop on the way to pick up food. We have a few stores in town, but some folks are caught off guard to find out the stores close early. But Caseys has sandwiches and assorted quick items and is open until 11 pm.

The best camping in Fort Scott National Historic Site, KS guide

Overview

About

Lace up your walking shoes when you visit this National Historic Site—and expect lots of uneven ground. Yes, most of the buildings here are reconstructed (after all, the Fort closed in 1853, and the original buildings auctioned in 1885). But the rebuilt buildings are fascinating, giving you a real sense of what life was during the country's westward expansion. Don't miss the Wilson-Goodlander House, one of the few buildings still standing from the 19th century.

You can tour the fort and grounds using an app on your smartphone, which lets you explore at your own pace, or hold out for the guided tour that lets you dive a little deeper into the history (One odd but interesting fact: The soldiers at the fort ate stale bread, because fresh bread was considered bad for you!).

Come back at year-end holidays or during summertime event weekends to view re-enactments of one of the attacks on the fort that made it famous during the "Bleeding Kansas" era, and learn a little more about this site's troubled history from the era of Manifest Destiny and slavery. Soldiers with horses often come in for these events, and kids can sign up to be Trailblazers or Junior Rangers and participate in some cool programs that way. You may even hear some period artillery being shot off — History class was never like this! Stay a little longer — view all nearby options for camping on both public campgrounds and private land by diving deeper into Hipcamp.
