Hawks Hideaway offers 8 campsites suitable for tents of all sizes, many of which can accommodate two or more tents (additional fees may apply). We also have a large, unfurnished teepee, and are working on a cozy, furnished country cottage. (ETA Sept 25). Large trailers and RVs are NOT allowed. Nearby activities include: bird watching, hiking, river rafting or tubing, kayaking, fishing, swimming, stargazing, and rockhounding. This area conforms to the Arizona Dark Sky initiative, and while we are not dark-sky certified, we've had several guests compliment us on our beautiful skys. When it comes to rockhounding, or amateur geology, this is a fantastic area for exploration and study. We gladly welcome pets, as long as you take care of all their needs, including cleaning up any mess and filling in any holes. Well mannered, friendly dogs may be unleashed from time to time. Please, PLEASE watch your small pets carefully. If you're traveling with cats, please keep them on a lead. There is a riding academy and boarding facility adjacent to our property, and a long pleasant trail allows horseback riders, hikers and cyclists to travel along the Verde Greenway into Old Town Cottonwood, a pleasant 30 minute walk through lush riparian area. Hawks Hideaway is a family owned property, occupied by a 3rd and 4th generation, mother-son team. Two generations have lived and died here before us and we are proud to be the custodians of this majestic property, full of old growth, gigantic cottonwood trees. A birdwatcher, or naturalists dream. Hawks Hideaway is a natural and secluded spot located directly adjacent to the state-maintained Verde River Greenway. This means you may encounter wildlife and pests associated with being in such close connection to nature. Hawks Hideaway is next to many miles of wilderness. You may see or encounter wildlife of all kinds, most are harmless, some are dangerous. It is your responsibility to know the difference. Be prepared to tuck your food away and bring ample protection from the insects. You are responsible for your own safety and are camping here at you own risk. Please do not interact with any wild animals. If you encounter something and need help, please reach out to us. We live on the property and are readily available.

Our family -- Adam, Shelley, Zoe, Ava, and Cairo -- purchased the RV park in 2021. The property was a trading post for decades but had fallen into disrepair. We have been busy painting, cleaning and improving the grounds to become a comfortable oasis for your family. Our location on US Hwy 89 on the east side of the highway is only a few miles from the breathtaking aspens of Lockett Meadow, the ruins of Wupatki National Monument and the lava flows at Sunset Crater. The park is a short drive to downtown Flagstaff, and on the way to the Grand Canyon, Monument Valley, Lake Powell, Moab and Durango. Stay the night or as long as you like! Drink in the hibiscus sunrises above the Painted Desert and relax into the long shadows of the San Francisco Peaks. If there is a recent storm in the area the road will be difficult to navigate.

Gather around the propane operated firepit in the backyard for some R&R. Bring a hammock 'cuz there are unlimited opportunities for stringing one up! Tons of activities will keep you occupied, including hiking and biking on the nearby Arizona Trail (just 1/2 mile away), or even sledding on your very own private 2 acre piece of paradise! What's even better is the property backs onto the National Forest, for unlimited enjoyment of nature. In the evening crack open a book, or start playing a game with your besties to close out a long day. The property is completely off the grid, making it very appealing to those travelers and adventurers who want to create a minimal carbon footprint on their vacation. The kitchen sink has a hand pump that draws water from under the sink from a 10 gallon water jug. You can refill the jug as needed from a hand pump located in the back yard. There is solar powered lighting and a USB phone charger station. There is no electrical power available. Cell service is available in the area depending on your carrier. The outdoor composting toilet is super clean with little or no odor. The cabin is located at 8200' in the San Francisco Peaks in the pines and aspens. Snowshoe or cross country ski, go sledding or snowmobiling, or just good old fashioned relaxation will make the time fly by. Our sunsets and night star-gazing are just spectacular and we're enough off the beaten path that there's no crowds or traffic to deal with, but you are close to dining and area attractions. This is a quiet, rural neighborhood and a peaceful farm that borders the National Forest for easy hiking and few neighbors. The farm animals do cluck, crow, whinny, neigh, baa, bleat, squeal, and oink at various times, including early morning. There is one mile of a somewhat bumpy gravel road with hills to reach our neighborhood, so please make sure you are ready for that and have adequate towing power. The nearest services and dining are 5 minutes away. We are about 25-30 minutes to Sedona, the Village of Oak Creek, and the popular red rock hiking sites. This darling camper cabin has one bedroom with a queen sized bed (2 guests), and two pull out couches for up to four additional guests. The well stocked kitchen has all the cookware and utensils you'll need for cooking, a propane range, as well as a cooler for your use (bring ice). A gas barbecue is on site as well. The wood stove kicks out a ton of heat to keep you toasty while you sip on steamy hot chocolate that is provided for your enjoyment. Gather around the propane operated firepit in the backyard for some R&R. Bring a hammock 'cuz there are unlimited opportunities for stringing one up! Tons of activities will keep you occupied, including hiking and biking on the nearby Arizona Trail (just 1/2 mile away), or even sledding on your very own private 2 acre piece of paradise! What's even better is the property backs onto the National Forest, for unlimited enjoyment of nature. In the evening crack open a book, or start playing a game with your besties to close out a long day. The property is completely off the grid, making it very appealing to those travelers and adventurers who want to create a minimal carbon footprint on their vacation. The kitchen sink has a hand pump that draws water from under the sink from a 10 gallon water jug. You can refill the jug as needed from a hand pump located in the back yard. There is solar powered lighting and a USB phone charger station. There is no electrical power available. Cell service is available in the area depending on your carrier. The outdoor composting toilet is super clean with little or no odor. The cabin is located at 8200' in the San Francisco Peaks in the pines and aspens. Snowshoe or cross country ski, go sledding or snowmobiling, or just good old fashioned relaxation will make the time fly by. If that's not enough check this out:(a) it's just 5 miles to the Arizona Nordic Center for incredible cross country ski trails(b) it's just 18 miles to Snowbowl for chairlift rides or world class skiing(c) it's just 20 miles to the hip town of Flagstaff for fantastic restaurants, golfing, shopping, coffee shops and museums(d) it's just 60 miles to historic Williams with the Bearizona wildlife park and the popular Grand Canyon Railway(e) it's just 55 miles to the world famous Grand Canyon. George and Jennifer were great hosts and very friendly! As soon as we arrived, George went out of his way to help set up and also did a safety check on our way out! They have a beautiful property that is indeed very quiet and peaceful. We were given privacy as desired and were quick to respond to any questions. The creek is really close by and was a blast to enjoy. Also, the location is perfect with plenty to do closeby and gave easy access to Cottonwood, Sedona and surrounding areas... Can't wait to visit again soon!

It was a great site to stay at. Perfect amenities for adults and kids. The activities planned were spaced out and great fun. Deluxe premium spots were the right place to be because it’s centralized to everything! My kids loved fishing in the pond, and swimming. When it got too hot we did activities in the clubhouse. Food truck this weekend was delicious!! I was glad to not cook, and have a healthy food tasting meal. My only recommendation is to light up the pickleball courts at night! It’s too hot to play in the day in the middle of summer. Either way we will be returning!!

Great property with lovely shade trees! The kind host, nearby creek, and farm animals made it a memorable trip! We will definitely be back. We were there for the 4th of July weekend. Laura recommended we go to Sycamore Park and see the local parade. Those were both great suggestions! The shower house and toilet house also made for cush camping! It's a great spot for families!

I enjoyed the privacy and solitude. The hoasts were accommodating and answered any questions I had thoroughly. One thing that really caught my attention was that the scenery was breathtaking. I noticed how much the land has evolved and really impressed with how there were many rock formations that seemed to defy gravity. Donovin pointed out some rock formations that made it clear how his campground got it's name. And yes... I did get to enjoy getting Sun on places that haven't seen daylight in quite a while, and with no feeling of judgment whatsoever.

Site #6 was a great spot for our group of 5. We had multiple cars and tents, and we fit comfortably. The location is great, secluded but close to Cottonwood. The spot has lots of shade and the tables make hanging out at the site very comfortable. Kerry is a great host, and communicates quickly. We will definitely stay here again. We were thinking that there is a lot of agriculture and livestock around, so probably the water in the river is high in nitrogen. We weren’t comfortable swimming, but it was nice to dip our feet in on a hot day. Definitely recommend this spot!

Camping in Walnut Canyon National Monument guide

Overview

About

Slightly off the beaten path near Flagstaff sits a cliff that once housed families belonging to the Sinagua tribe. The cliff dwellings above Walnut Canyon give you an idea of what life would be like in this high elevation without any air conditioning or Wi-Fi. Stones and dried mud come together to form a strong structure beneath the cliff face, nearly 600 feet above the canyon floor.

Sinagua people constructed the wall to create a home in the rock face along a curving part of Walnut Canyon. You have two trails to follow here. The Rim Trail, about 3/4 of a mile, follows the upper part of the canyon and has very little elevation change. To reach the ruins, The Island Trail is 1 mile long, and you need to climb 240 steps to get in and out of the canyon. Along the way, you get to gaze upon 20 ruins leftover from this settlement.

The homes in the rock face date back to the 12th or 13th centuries as some of the oldest structures in the southwestern United States. You can almost imagine living here, with crops growing near the stream bank and some wildlife passing through. Guided hikes are a good choice here, as rangers can take you off the normal path and even up to the 1904 cabin built on the site. Bring plenty of water and good hiking shoes.

This park is only open during the day and every day except Christmas. The closest campsites are in Flagstaff, about 10 miles away.
