Exactly what the doctor ordered! The field was muddy (tis the season) but Tom was in communication and warned us about the conditions a few days before the trip, so we were able to prepare. There wasn’t any firewood for purchase at the site but we were able to make do. Had a nice 3 day stay here at the Upper Nook at Hole In The Wall. Was only one other camper on site, and given it's fairly remote location, it was extremely quiet and peaceful! The weather wasn't so cooperative, but we enjoyed the stay anyways. My only criticism is that the site was supposed to have water available...it was not. Due to the cold weather, Tom had pulled the pump. Although we completely understand the necessity, an advance notice should have been given so we could have equipped ourselves better for a "no water" situation!

Access was good. I really like the fact that there was a big "OPEN" flag at the gate to ensure we found the right place. The site was level enough and we wanted power for the night and it worked well.
There were bins with "Firewood $5" on them, but they were empty. That was not ideal but there were plenty of blow downs to burn so it worked out as it was cold and a fire was really desired.
There was an outhouse. Clean and did its job.
All in all a good place to stay.

Great spot, easy to find and nice walk to a little public beach down the road. Not the most level for vans/rvs, but we were able to make it work.

A weekend at The Upper Nook was just what was needed for body and soul. We enjoyed a walk up Taylor Hill and back along the ITS trails to take in the fall foliage, and a return visit to Smalls Falls nearby. Tom was a gracious host and gave us lots of suggestions for things to do. No problem parking our 32’ Class A. We enjoyed our stay!

This is such a hidden little gem if you’re okay with no power or running water. It was nice and quiet, plenty of space between camp sites but also close enough to make friends. It’s a very short walk (about 7minutes) to porter lake, and it’s well worth it! Our dog loved the area as well. Tom swung by and said hello, let us know where things were and was friendly. Def worth it!

When you arrive it’s clearly labeled so don’t be fooled yes it’s right there, inside that big open mossy space, 4 picnic tables, pits and pond. Get ready to put your swim suit on and walk or drive to the town beach. My friends, my 2 pups and I kayaked to the island, it was so wonderful. My bf brought his fishing pole. We seen the loons, mushrooms and pine cones everywhere, so beautiful.

The land is well kept and amenities are easy to find. The land is pretty level so it’s easy to set up (we had a 12 foot tear drop trailer). When Tom introduced himself and his mother, they were both very kind and explained that they have kayaks for campers at the pond nearby. I would recommend this to anyone that wants to get away for a little while, not a whole lot of traffic on the nearby road.

Great stay! Easy to find and having access to an outhouse and power was great. The sun came out in the morning while I enjoyed my coffee. I had a chance to go down to the beach for a dip before heading back on the road.
I can’t wait to go back and take the kayaks out to the rope swing!

We loved our stay. The site was level for our tent and fire pit worked well. Wood on site to buy was a nice plus. The best part was taking the canoe on the lake and exploring the island. The outhouse could use a wipe down, and fresh paint, but it’s an outhouse! and we spent very little time in it;) We will come again.

There was nice grass underfoot rather than hard ground and roots like many camp sites. The area was open but shade is available too. It’s an easy walk to the public beach and landing. Except for the sound of jet skis, it is in a reasonably quiet area for being off a public beach access road. And we were there on July 4th so … The camp spot itself was very quiet when we stayed, got lucky camping near quiet people. There is little to no phone signal, at least for my carrier Verizon. The surrounding countryside is very beautiful.

The sites were very close together with little to no privacy. The bathroom was also really bad, it looked as if it had never been cleaned before and had plentiful amounts of spiders. Tom was very nice though.

The canoes and kayaks available for use was awesome. We loved paddling the lake and exploring the island there. I will say you are pretty close to the neighbors without much privacy. That was okay for us because our neighbors were great people. We loved our stay overall!

This was interesting to get into, especially in the dark with a big rig. There were two driveways apparently, we did know this and took the first. It was marked HipCamp. A lady helped us who was apparently also staying there. We had to back out and drive farther down the road then back into the lower area. It was ultimately fine, but hairy to get into the site properly. I will say it was quiet. The outhouse was impeccably clean. That was nice. And the next day,we checked out the lake/beach which was gorgeous, down the road a ways.

Tom’s land was beautiful, quiet, easily accessible and had everything we needed in a campsite. Tom is a very nice guy and was helpful and accommodating. I would highly recommend the top of the field campsite to anyone.

Hole In The Wall is a hidden gem in the mountains of western Maine! Nice gravel pad and large stone fire pit on a field with a view of the local hills. Firewood is available on site. Just a short walk down to Porter Lake, or up to the top of Taylor Hill for more mountain views. We had no problem getting our 32’ motor home in and out.
Tom is a gracious host and offered the use of canoes/kayaks to explore the lake. He also recommended a short trip to Smalls Falls which did— well worth the visit!
We will stay here again.

I love staying at Tom's "Hole In The Wall!" I've stayed at sites 1 and 2 and both are absolutely perfect for hammock camping (my preferred method of camping).
It definitely is extremely buggy but it's Maine! What do you expect?! Especially after such a rainy summer... as long as you go prepared you'll be all set! :)
I especially loved using the kayaks available near the beach!
Can't wait to go back!

I love camping in this Hole In the Wall. 🥰
Both times I've stayed, I've hammocked (first in site one and the second time in site two). The walk to the beach is no problem at all and there are little carts to help carry the kayaks!
The sites themselves are very nice! My only recommendation is to bring all the bug spray you have! Not sure if it's because of the rain this year but it's super buggy (but it's literally the Woods in Maine so what else would you expect?!). I just booked my third stay- and this time the nights should be pretty a comfy 49 degrees. Can't wait!
