David and Logan were excellent hosts, start to finish! I’m a solo traveler and felt completely safe. Plus, my two dogs loved our time here as well! Detroit Lakes — only 8 minutes to Main Street — is large as far as lake towns go with all the staples, cute local stores, and plenty of chains, too. I traveled in and out to see family/friends on Pelican Lake, which was only 20-30 minutes. I’m still a newbie dipping my toe into “van life” and my everyday, nothing special, minivan did well with the Memorial Day weekend weather bringing us cool 40s rain and warm upper 60s sunshine. Such a beautiful region of the country this time of year. Hope to get back to the area more and more! Thanks for sharing your corner of the world!

So many deer! I got in late, but David still greeted me and gave me a tour and was incredibly accomodating. Its a beautiful calm spot to spend time when you're alone, but if you go in season, I could see it as a fun bustling spot to make new friends.

We had a fantastic stay with David and Logan. The entire place was well-cared for and full of unexpected small pleasure: heat in our teepee, bumper pool in the barn, super-fast Wi-Fi. We had wonderful conversation around the fire each evening of our stay - thanks David for the book! I’m loving it! And we slept so well and warm in the teepee, despite freezing temperatures each night.
We knew very little about the area and learned during our stay that Detroit Lakes is a really special spot. Located one hour from Fargo and one hour from the Mississippi Headwaters, Tumbleweed Base camp was perfect for our needs.

David and Logan's farm was beautiful. Very clean and well-maintained, set up nicely for families. They had all the amenities we needed - fire ring, wood, picnic table, and potable water. We tent camped at the bottom of a little open meadow. They've also renovated a 100-year old barn into a fun game room/social area that is quite charming. We had the place to ourselves to enjoy the fall weather and leaves, a perfect 'base camp' for our expedition to see the Trolls art installation in Detroit Lakes. David and Logan were accommodating and gracious hosts. We'd recommend and go back.

Tumbleweed was the perfect "base camp" for our weekend getaway. We biked right from our campsite to the fun, flowy and fast MTB trails at Detroit Mountain and had a blast. The trip into town to search for trolls was quick and easy. And the property itself is beautiful and quiet. We savored the starry nights and peaceful feeling. Our only disappointment is that the weather was too nice and we didn't get to experience all the delights the barn has on offer. We'll have to come back for a snowy or rainy weekend so we can play ping pong with David!

David and Logan were fantastic hosts - we are on our way home from west to east and booked last minute. We were welcomed when we arrived, and enjoyed the lovely fire pit that is on property- complete with wood! We shared the fire with a fellow traveler and had a fantastic evening exchanging stories! The only bummer was we didn’t get to spend more time at this location - seems like there is lots to do, and the property is beautifully maintained! Would definitely recommend!

We loved the big open area we camped in with friends! Lots of room for our kids to run around and explore! They also really loved the barn and getting to play ping pong! David was so nice and accommodating. We really appreciated him moving a trailer from the parking area to our campsite and the sporting equipment he set out for the kids. It was such a sweet, nicely taken care of spot to celebrate the end of summer and to go troll hunting! Thanks again David!

We loved staying at Tumbleweed Base Camp! This was our first time camping as a family with our 5yo twins and 8yo. We camped with some friends as well and it was great to have the whole lower area to ourselves where the kids could run and play and we all had a great time.
We loved that the porta-potties were clean, near the camping sites, were stocked with hand sanitizer, and plenty of toilet paper. They even had lights in them!
We thought we'd be fine without using the fridge but after several hours realized we'd benefit from using it so our food didn't go bad. It was so great to have the shared fridge and freezer in the barn, as well as a place to hang out and get out of the sun for a while.
We brought an inflatable queen mattress and it was so great we were able to hook it up near the campfire and blow it up. There was also a water hose there which was great for refilling water bottles and ensuring the campfire was out at night.
Overall, we couldn't have asked for a better experience. Thank you so much!!

Great family friendly spot right across from Detroit mountain (where there are 2 of the Project 412 sculptures/ trolls). Our tent was in a quiet place with great access to clean and not stinky bathrooms. The barn was also very nice to have communal indoor area with games and a refrigerator/ freezer. Definitely a plus to have access to a fridge in the summer heat! Logan and David were very helpful and Kind. Will definitely be back next year!

Was there for 2 nights off road across from barn. Nice spot for sure, friendly hosts. The shared space in the barn was great. Played some.ping pong and bumper pool.
Only a few minutes from Detroit Lakes as well. Would go back if in the area

Logan and his dad, David were terrific hosts! They’ve created a sweet spot and the barn is super cool. We played bumper pool, which was really fun and our daughter played Logan in ping pong. They were very gracious and want people to have a nice time there. Detroit Lakes area is awesome too. We decided to look for the trolls and got to see a lot of the area and did a good amount of walking. Definitely highly recommend this place and all the area has to offer.

Both David and Logan are excellent hosts. They are ready to help you with anything you need. The location is great because it is outside of town enough to have wildlife around yet close enough to get into town in 10 or 15 minutes. A couple owls were hooting very close by at night and other birds were around in the woods. There is a barn available to play some games or hang out and if it was raining would be a good place to spend some time. Would recommend that you try staying with David and Logan.

Great Stay at the Tumbleweed base Camp. Beautiful well kept piece of land. Logan and David are great hosts and it was nice hearing some of Logan's travel tales and seeing some of those while hanging out in the huge old barn to which we ran to during a rain storm.. to hide have some drinks and play some games. We were coming home to Ohio from out at Glacier in Montana.. stopping in Fargo and continuing to Detroit Lakes to check out the artist Thomas Dambo's newest exhibit of Trolls. Which is basically scattered all over the town and beyond. But if you happen to stop in to see the Trolls, then Tumbleweed is a perfect base camp for that. And just in general. We didn't get to chill by the fire ring due to rain but i would definitely recommend this spot to any hipcamper

We really enjoyed our weekend trip. The barn was an added bonus as we played bumper pool and ping pong.
The location is perfect especially if you have activities in the lakes area.
Plus the hosts were very nice as we enjoyed learning about the place and other adventures

I had such a nice time at David and Logan's! They are very gracious and generous. I will definitely return. For solo female campers, I felt very safe and comfortable the whole time. The land is pretty big but not too big where you'd be too far away from the barn in any spot. If you camp on the lawn they provide a wheelbarrow to bring your supplies in, though I did see other spots where a group camped next to their car so just ask them what your camping needs are and they are quick to respond ! :)
It felt very much like some of my international experiences backpacking but with that at-home-in-Minnesota lake country flavor. Its very cool to know places like that exist here.
Looking forward to returning again soon!
