The camping spot is beautiful. I also booked last minute AND came after dark and Ned was so kind to show me where to go (as well as helping me to navigate around trees). Between the lovely location and the wonderfully kind hosts, this is a great spot. Bonus that is super close to the Dragon’s Tooth trail parking lot.

Passing Down the Camping Tradition

This is an excellent camping site that feels secluded, but is not too far off the beaten path. My two young boys (5 and 7) had an awesome first real night out in the woods. They kept saying "this is the best day ever". A bonus being able to share it with my dad/their grandfather. Ned came down to greet us after we'd arrived with a warm smile and could not have been more welcoming. We made camp, prepared dinner, sat around the fire, marveled at the maple sap collection operation, made up stories, skipped rocks, found toads, and slept under the stars. What a lucky group of guys we are to get to do that, and thanks to Ned for providing the opportunity. The night after our trip I learned that many of our friends in Roanoke have also stayed at Savage Acres and we're now excited to plan a whole shindig with a bunch of families. Maybe when the weather is warmer and we can take advantage of the natural lazy river and firefly entertainment.

We had an amazing trip getting to stay at Ned's place!! It was nice listening to the river while hanging out by a fire each night. Tent sites were easy to access and conveniently located near other outdoor activities.

Great Spot for Tent Camping!

My girlfriend and I absolutely loved our stay at Creekside Woods. The location right by the creek was incredible! Literally some of the clearest, most majestic water I’ve ever seen. It made the whole campsite feel peaceful and almost magical. We were also just minutes away from multiple entry points to the Appalachian Trail and close to iconic hikes like Dragon’s Tooth and McAfee Knob, which made the trip even better (and made me realize how out of shape I was :D). The campsite itself felt surprisingly secluded, even with the leaves down, giving us plenty of privacy and quiet time to recharge. The hosts were super accommodating and responsive, making everything from check-in to checkout seamless. Overall, we had an amazing experience and will definitely be back. Highly recommended for anyone looking for a beautiful, relaxing nature getaway.

Ned was a great host. The camp site was private and spacious. We added on some excellent fresh produce and maple syrup from his farm. The site is only a few minutes away from great hikes.

So enjoyable! 10/10! Accommodating host for needs upon arrival and was there if needed after. The Maple Knoll area was enchanting - we were lucky to have such a gorgeous view of the 3rd day past Harvest Moon and the colors of the trees were doing their amazing change from - day 1 to day 4 it was pretty noticeable. Even some novice campers were with us and they had a pleasant time. We made buttermilk pancakes one morning and Savage Acres maple syrup now holds my top favorite, so glad I added that extra! We will definitely return in the warm months to enjoy the private swim hole with the gorgeous rock formation. So happy to have found such a pleasant camping spot in Savage Acres as our first booking on HipCamp.

Creekside fun

A truly magical campsite. We set up 5 tents, with a fire pit and table between us, the creekside camp is fabulous for a group. The creek and cliff were such a lovely backdrop, with lots of trails and land to explore. The maple syrup was 🔥. We will certainly be back.

Swimming and camping paradise.

Absolutely loved my stay at the Creekside Woods campsite. Ned met me at the house, got me directed where I needed to go and let me know where to get firewood. The site was easy to get to (I have a RAV4 with 4-wheel drive, but smaller cars could make it too). The site was clean and well laid out with fire pits and access to the stream. The swimming hole is where I spent nearly my entire stay. I’ll definitely be back!

We were wanting a nice quiet relaxing day and overnight by the creek. Ned’s place provided just that. It was beautiful and nice camping spot. The walnut tree was shedding walnuts so you couldn’t park at the opening of the camp site in fear of damaging your vehicle, no problem. The creek was great, our dog loved it! Ned was very accommodating and greeted us with kindness when we arrived. It was the perfect afternoon until it around sunset that’s when the loud music started from Ned’s home and continued for 5 hours or possibly more, we packed up and left and drove 2 hours home. At first, it was fine, no worries, surely he would be respectful and stop at a decent hour so his guest could sleep. By 11:30pm we had enough. Couldn’t sleep from the noice and base thumping so loudly. Very disappointed when the description states peaceful sounds of the creek. It does state there is no “quiet time hours”, “just be respectful to neighbors, wildlife and land (rule 10)”. Just disappointed that our nice peaceful evening was ruined by not “respecting neighbors” especially by the owner. I hope others have better luck than we did.

Dogs, Friends and Walnut Bottom Cam

Needs property is just beautiful 🤩! The creek and swimming hole is amazing...clear and clean and cold. We enjoyed a spot at Walnut Bottom with friends and our dogs. The site was shady and mostly level. Ned was welcoming and helpful with property information. I loved walking in the upper field and looking at the moon. We had a rainstorm come thru one night, but it was not muddy afterwards, because of the sandy ground. As for directions, I recommend following his written instructions with the mailbox number, as we missed the turn twice using navigation Lol. We look forward to a return trip!

Enjoyed our time at Walnut Bottom. Make sure to bring bug spray; we didn’t have any breeze our two nights at the spot and the bugs were out and hungry! I’m pretty averse to bug spray, so this is more on me than the property :). Plenty of room for our 2 aussies to run around and not bother the neighbors which is always a big thing for us. Also, this site is pretty secluded if you don’t like seeing your neighbors. The site is mostly bare dirt, so just realize your aussies will lay in it, then jump up in your camper and promptly roll around on your bed! No Verizon service, but the view of the sky is awesome (no light pollution, so start gazing was great!) so service with Starlight is awesome! Would definitely stay here again, but would try Maple Knoll if when we return.

Definitely book this!

This was the my first time using hip camp and it definitely was a great experience. Even through it rained the entire first night the spot dried out really quickly and didn't affect me too much. Ned was great and provided me with precut firewood. It was super private, I saw him when I got there and that's it but he was accessible if I ever needed him. I had a blast sitting in a pool float on the creek and reading for most of my 2nd day. Sleeping next to the water at night was super peaceful. I will definitely come back.

we had a group of 7 that stayed at Maple Knoll & had the best time here. we will definitely try to return next time we go camping. the land itself was gorgeous with plenty of room to spread out along with a huge maple tree to seek shelter from the sun under :-). our favorite part was the swimming hole at the creek, it was the perfect way to cool off after doing one of the many hikes nearby. Ned was super responsive and we felt like we had everything we needed. cannot recommend this site enough!

Another Perfect Stat!

This was our family’s second summer visiting Ned’s land and staying at Walnut Bottom! It has become a family favorite - our kids (9, 7, 4, 2) LOVED the swimming hole this year now that a few can swim well! Other highlights: stargazing, paddle boarding at Carvin’s Cove, getting coffee and local art at Sycamore Station, searching for fossils in the creek & popping downtown for the Farmer’s Market! We can’t wait to book next years stay!

The site was beautiful, we were on the Creekside site. I loved that part. But, the porta potty was absolutely disgusting. You couldn't use it. The smell was so bad. It has not been emptied in a very long time. It was so full, it was close to the top. When someone opened the door or the wind blew our way, we could smell it at the camp site. We would have to go to the gas station down the road. Also, we were sitting on the picnic table playing a game, when the boards broke and 2 of us fell to the ground. Luckily we only got a couple scratches that were small. Need to check some stuff around the area and put some money I to fixing things and emptying the porta potty more often.

Such a beautiful spot! Super close to McAfee Knob. We enjoyed walking the property and putting our toes in the water, although it was too cold to swim. Our pups had a blast too! HIGHLY recommend 4x4, as the field to enter was saturated and would have been sketchy in our car. Meal by Alexis was 10/10! We’ll be back!
