When to Go
The summer season from Memorial Day to Labor Day is the park’s peak period, with many visitors arriving to enjoy the trails, warm weather, and blooming wildflowers. Roan Mountain is home to the largest natural Catawba rhododendron gardens in North America, which typically bloom in the third week of June, coinciding with the Rhododendron Festival. Though cool and often wet, winter promises cross-country skiing and birdwatching, as well as fewer crowds.
Know Before You Go
- If you can’t find what you need in the park’s camp store, head just outside the park to Jack’s Petrol and Provisions.
- Cell service is unreliable throughout the park, so download maps prior to arrival.
- Only certified heat-treated firewood is allowed to enter the park.
