Star Route

1 site ¡ Lodging3 acres ¡ Carmel Valley, CA
The original owner, of this property, Varisto,  was a happy go lucky bootlegger back in the day, that welcomed many to try his brew and listen to a song or two on the accordion.  He's good neighbor, a famous cowboy artist, Jack Swanson, and he used to have fun fishing out of the river, and sharing a glass or two.  One day as Jack was herding his cattle through the area, past Princess Camp, located across the street, he spend a little too long here at Star Route, and to his surprise, the cattle had made their way into Princess Camp startling a few campers outside their airstreams. The Esselen Indians settled just up the road at the Cachagua Community Park back in the 1800's right by the Carmel River, which has an old stone house above the river, and many places to sit and reflect.

The best camping near Tassajara Zen Mountain Center guide

Overview

About

Tassajara Zen Center, nestled in the scenic hills of Big Sur, is a gateway to experiencing the Soto Zen practice. With the mission "to embody, express, and make accessible the wisdom and compassion of the Buddha," this Zen Center is a perfect stop for those traveling and camping in the Big Sur region. With several Zen practice programs to choose from, the Tassajara Zen Center has been offering its unique teachings to the wider community since 1967, when it was the first Zen training monastery outside of Japan.

When to go

The best time to visit Tassajara Zen Mountain Center is during its open seasons for practice and work periods. The Winter Practice Period runs from January 10 to April 4, while the Spring Work Period spans April 10 to 29. These times offer a structured environment for Zen practice amid the peaceful wilderness.

Know before you go

  • Check the calendar for specific dates and programs available during your visit.
  • Be prepared for a remote experience; Tassajara is accessible via a narrow, rugged road.
  • Respect the Zen practice environment; maintain a quiet and contemplative demeanor.
  • Participation in daily meditation and work practice may be part of your stay.
  • Connectivity is limited, so plan ahead for a digital detox.
