When to Go
Chumash Painted Cave State Historic Park is open year-round from dusk until dark, and while it gets lots of crowds during the summer season, the temperatures can be a bit much from June through September for some visitors, with highs in the 90s. In fact, you're best off visiting in the October-November or in April-May shoulder seasons, which offer pleasant temperatures, low risk of rainfall, and considerably fewer crowds.

Chumash Painted Cave State Historic Park
See beautifully preserved, centuries-old Chumash rock art at this tiny park.
Situated in the hills above Santa Barbara, tiny Chumash Painted Cave State Historic Park preserves a sandstone cave featuring intricate rock art created by the indigenous Chumash people of the area. Archaeologists believe that the art dates to at least the 17th century. There's a grated gate in front of the cave to keep people from entering, but there are a few wide peepholes for those who want to peer inside. The park doesn’t offer camping facilities, but there are plenty of privately run campgrounds and Hipcamps nearby, particularly around the Santa Ynez River to the north of the park.
