The famous 'Driftless Books' is also found in Viroqua, along with live music on Court Street every other Saturday. Music in the Parks also offers live music in the area on Wednesdays throughout the summer. We are 22 miles from the Kickapoo Valley Reserve, and a bit further North, from Ontario WI, one may embark by canoe or kayak, through some of the most stunning landscape to be found in Wisconsin. This area is called The Driftless because it lacks glacial drift, which refers to the deposits of silt, gravel and rock that glaciers would have left behind had they passed through this part of Southwestern Wisconsin. The area is unique in that the land here was never flattened by the ice that came through most of the Midwest during the last glacial period/ice age. When glaciers were in surrounding areas, the melt-water sometimes made its way into the Driftless Area and contributed to the formation of the valleys and bluffs which characterize the landscape, which is known for steep hills, forested ridges, deeply carved river valleys, and karst geology with caves and spring-fed cold water trout streams. Ecologically, the Driftless Area's flora and fauna are more closely related to those of the Great Lakes region and New England than those of the broader Midwest and central Plains regions.

We bought the farmette with much work outside and home interior remodel to complete. We slowly turned the property into our family oasis. We neighbor a pasture with cows. There are free range chickens running around during the day. Geese greet us every evening and morning at the pond...as do the many bullfrogs. Occasionally you'll hear the coyotes, but they keep their distance. The stars shine peacefully and the sunsets are picturesque (most afternoons). The pond is a great place to swim and fish. The hillside is a nice walk for exercise or take the easier route and sit under the great oak tree in the other pasture. Campsites are off the road, behind our main home. You won't find a sign...we keep it simple. We allow pets at the sites for a $5 per pet/per night. As well as the Boy Scout campgrounds located nearby. Locals have caught crayfish and swam in the Apple river, we are unfamiliar with current spots. People have tubed and canoed down the Apple river. There are numerous state parks within driving distance for hiking, sight seeing, eagle watching etc. Immerse yourself in the vast history of the area. There is no running water in the cabin but there is a dry sink and Bukee. A shower is just a short walk away at the main cabin with all the instant hot water that could be asked for. We have plenty of extras to share if you need something, if not a Dollar General is just a mile away. Please be aware there are poisonous plants and various wildlife that roam freely. Welcome to The Prairie Lodge — A Rustic Retreat on Historic Land Nestled in the heart of the Driftless Region of Northeast Iowa, The Prairie Lodge sits on 200 acres of native prairie and timber as part of the Cook Heritage Farm Estate. This cherished family property has been passed down through generations for over 173 years. The property borders the scenic Turkey River and is surrounded by rolling farmland and gentle bluffs that lead toward the mighty Mississippi River. Rich in natural beauty, the Driftless Area is geologically unique—never touched by glaciers—and is known for its caves, underground streams, blind valleys, sinkholes, and cold spring-fed creeks. The Prairie Lodge, once the main “corn crib” used for drying and storing harvested corn, has been thoughtfully renovated into a comfortable and charming retreat. Inside, you’ll find a full kitchen, two bathrooms, a cozy living room, and an open loft with four queen beds. The loft comfortably sleeps eight and can accommodate up to ten guests with a blow-up mattress if needed. Step onto the east-facing patio deck with your morning beverage and watch the sunrise over fields of blooming prairie flowers. Wildlife is abundant—deer, rabbits, songbirds, pheasants, and even eagles are frequent visitors. As night falls, the second-floor deck becomes the perfect spot for stargazing and listening to the calls of coyotes echoing across the land. Next door to the Lodge, you’ll find the Bin Bar—a once-abandoned grain bin transformed in 2017 into a unique gathering space ideal for late-night storytelling and nightcaps under the stars. For those traveling with a larger group, RV campsites with full water, sewer, and electrical hookups are available near the Lodge. Activities nearby: Iowa towns including Decorah, Clermont, Elgin, Elkader, and Prairie Du Chen, Wisconsin are within driving distance. Each town boasts its own fun for day and evening entertainment including local artisan wares, antiquing, hiking, biking, golfing, water recreation, breweries, and dining spots.

We enjoyed our stay at Brittany’s spot. We were in the airstream , which had all we needed— fridge, kettle for boiling water, a couple coffee makers, comfortable sleeping arrangements, clean restroom on the side of their house, accessible from outside, and especially, peace and quiet! The animals - sheep, goats, poultry, dogs - are very present but we never heard them except during the day (which helped a light sleeper like myself) and it was delightful to stay on a working farm that was so clean and cute . Communicating with Brittany was fast and easy, and directions were perfect. We felt welcome and we would recommend it to anyone who would like to be near Wisconsin cheese country and the very interesting artist/artisan hub of Mineral Point.

We really enjoyed our stay on the homestead! Jessica has carved out such a beautiful piece of the hillside. I'm glad we stayed in the bunkie, gave us a nice oasis from the rain. I really enjoyed the workshops she offers. Held my first chicken and learned so much about them. Who knew chickens had so much drama? Their the best reality TV show. Thank you for all the foraging knowledge as well. This was such a unique stay.

Such a fabulous place. Went down with the family and stayed in the camper. Everything you need for cooking is provided which was awesome. Great pond for fishing and swimming. I think my kids turned into fish. Two awesome turkeys to hang around with. With definitely be going back again.

River was kind and welcoming. Excellent communication! Really appreciated the A/C since it was muggy and humid overnight. Bugs get bad at night, but it is MN in the woods so that is to be expected. The outdoor shower was awesome, snacks were appreciated. Peaceful and quiet. Would stay again!

My friend and I felt very relaxed and comfortable here. The host (Jessica) is very welcoming and we felt at home right away. The house and gardens are very cool, lots of flowers blooming this time of year, nice touches throughout. The Bunkie was clean, quiet and cosy and had everything we needed for our one-night stay. We enjoyed sitting by the fire pit when we got back from dinner. Even though the house is on the outskirts of town, it was very quiet. I would absolutely stay here again.

We stayed in the Streamline. Yard and bathrooms were well kept. The host offers alot of great little things. ( coffee, coffee pot, bug spray, lighter,) little things that are great when you the camper forget it haha. A nice little walk or bike into the village for ice cream or a drink. Would reccomend to friends.

We absolutely loved the little oasis here in the driftless! It was a perfect quiet getaway from the city. We enjoyed the wildlife - butterflies, bees, deer, birds and the fireflies were so plentiful and beautiful. The cabin was equipped with everything you need for the weekend. Clean and perfectly set up! We'd love to come back to see it in the fall!

2 nights at Reel Adventures

The views of the hills and meadows were beautiful. The cabin was perfect, clean, everything we need to cook fresh brown trout, and coffee for the morning. It was nice to catch up on the local news with the large TV and sound bar in the morning. The Pine river is just outside the cabin, a 300 ft walk, to the cold water. Standing on the water with chest waders, we caught over 25 brown trout between two fisherman over a seven hour period. The front porch of the cabin is nice to sit on in the evening and listen to surrounding country side. The kitchen had everything we needed from a coffee maker, microwave, gas cooktop and oven, refrigerator, and bar to eat around.

Lone Rock itself is a charming little community where everyone seems friendly, and it’s nice knowing that convenient stores and anything you might need are just a short drive away. It offers the perfect balance of feeling tucked away while still being practical. If you’re looking for a place to unplug, recharge, and be reminded that life’s best moments are often the quiet ones, Rivers Edge Retreat is exactly that. We’ll absolutely be back.
