This wooded area is 5 miles away from the Ohiopyle State Park whitewater launch area and GAP bike trail. We are less than 9 miles from Frank Lloyd Wright's Classic Fallingwater and about 8 miles from Kentuck Knob one of the last resident homes he designed (both are open for tours). Fort Necessity National Battlefield is 5 miles away. There are numerous native trout streams in the area. Youghiogheny Reservoir is 7 miles away for fishing, boat rentals, and water-sports.
The Fern House is the primary camp cabin on the property. Although if someone would want to park a "self contained" camper or small RV on the property we would permit the unit to occupy the area in front of the driveway just pass the entrance gate. It is not within the ferns and is next to the road. There is an electrical outlet available at this small RV or van camper site.
We are "nice pet" friendly. Dogs should not be left in the cabin alone. We have a mountain spring (when the spring is running) up the trail road (450 feet away). The ferns will normally be in full glory by the end of May to mid September and are amazing, covering the forest floor. Deer, bear, wild turkey, fox, chipmunks, squirrels and many woodland birds abound the property especially owls. A picnic table, fire ring and firewood is available on the property. Free WiFi on the property as long as the plant life is not too thick! There is a mile hiking loop right on the property and many challenging trails in the area, including the starting point for the Laurel Highlands Hiking Trail. No smoking is permitted in the cabin. Our cabin is located on Deep Creek Lake in Western Maryland where most of land is either State parks or forests because of its natural beauty and recreational value.
The area is an all season resort where you can enjoy the lake and beach as well as various outdoor activities such as hiking, boating, fishing, sail boarding, hiking, and horseback riding most of the year.
In winter with up to 100 inches of snow, you can ski, snow board, and tube at the near by Wisp Ski Resort or cross country ski at several State parks managed for it during winter.
The fall is celebrated for the color change of the trees by the Fall Fest in mid October.
Current renovations for 2025 include new flooring throughout, new base cabinets, and other minor improvements.

2 nights at Ferns in the Forest
Me and my partner chose to rent this cabin for thanksgiving. It was absolutely fabulous, the cabin is so cozy, the composting toilet did not bring any smell, the shower was great, the bed was very comfortable and the view from the bed was the best part of the trip. I cannot wait to rent this again.
Virgil and his wife were also very welcoming. I highly recommend renting this property.

Weekend Trip to Ferns in the Forest
Virgil & Pam really go above and beyond at The Fern House! The cabin was comfy and stocked with everything one could need for an extended weekend away. Our hosts were generous and gracious. They provide great communication and hospitality. We spent 3 nights and wish it could've been longer! Our pups loved the mile walk around the property each morning plus great hiking spots nearby. We took advantage of the fireplace, local eatery suggestions, and the loft was the perfect hideaway for resting and waking to beautiful wooded views. We cant wait to come back!

Lovely spot. Had a great time stargazing and listening to the wildlife. Was really nice to see coopers rock during the day and stay in a quiet spot at night. Host was really nice and made sure we were comfortable but left us to it for the weekend.

The place and the organization was pretty good. In general a great place where to camp for the first time. The only issue I had is that the tent area is too close to the RV area. This means children screaming were annoying and also people just beating stuff or maybe a gun range. In any case, it is pretty noisy outside of the quiet hours.

My mom and I loved this cozy cabin site! Amber and her family are so kind and hospitable and we appreciated the clear directions upon arrival. We had everything we needed to fully enjoy the cabin and scenery. Will definitely be back!

We absolutely loved staying in the Fernhouse!! It was perfect. It was adorable and so cozy. It was very clean and had everything we needed. The location was wonderful! So close to hiking trails and lots of outdoor recreation. The hike around the property was beautiful and our dogs loved walking it with us in the morning. The outdoor area is super cozy too. Virgil was so kind and welcoming. We will be back again in another season!! I would highly recommend.

Tommy's place is gorgeous land! There are nice fields and woods. It felt entirely safe for women to camp alone. It was easy to find using the instructions and we didn't need 4wd. Would definitely go back!
Tommy is delightful and didn't make fun of me when I said I saw a big bear. It was really a cow in the neighbor's pasture, way off in the distance.

Without being too remote, it feels like it. The way the site it situated it feels very private! There is a long gravel drive that feels like you may have missed the turn but it’s actually the way you get in. I was located on tent site 2 and to me tent 1 & 2 are the best! Lots of room to spread out. The grassy knoll is well kept and level the lake is right there. We were a group of 4 women and we met another female solo traveler on site. What I like most about it was it felt very safe and as a new camper that is extremely important to me. I think the host Amber said there are only 8 or 10 sites so no traffic to speak of. A very communal feeling. No WiFi on site but if you venture off site you can pick it up 5 min away. Amber rocks!! Very hospitable and friendly. Two great towns 30 minutes away Deep Creek Lake and Oakland with lots of shops, restaurants, thrift shops and antiques. I look forward to becoming a regular at this site. Oh and did I mention no bugs 🐜

Loved that the site was further away from others and gave us some privacy. We really enjoyed the free roaming cows and the bathroom was very close by and clean!
We had some trouble finding our site and once we did we noticed the sign had fallen down. Would recommend stabilizing it a bit more and maybe some more signs to navigate, but otherwise it was a relaxing and peaceful time. The land was great and would definitely stay again!

Our stay at Bear Run Farms was great! The natural blue water was a highlight. Patience was a must for viewing it at its full potential, considering the time of year and what seemed to be the suns position. Worth the wait. Cows roam free and we weren't surprised to see them near our site while we drank our morning coffee. Clean, tidy land, and Amber, the host, was pleasantly friendly. We didn't have any cell service but that may have been our carrier. Definitely recommend!

This was my 3d stay at the Fern house. Virgil goes above and beyond, the little house is very comfy and well appointed, and it’s so great to have a mile long trail right at your doorstep for early morning and evening walks! Virgil even left biscuits for my dog ❤️
I think of this place as a home away from home.

Second time staying here. Still had good foliage coverage at the end of September to have a private camp area, although the creek wasn’t as loud (natural white noise!) as it is in the summer. This time there was no firewood provided, but it was better to have dry wood we bought at convenience stores given rain the previous days before we arrived. Close enough to Blackwater Falls State Park and Smokehole Caverns for us as a convenient base for two nights.

This was perfect for what I was needing. Nothing fancy, a field on the edge of the woods with a firepit. It felt very private, but wasn't far at all from the road. I parked near my site so I didn't have to haul anything to my site. Great experience!
