2 nights at Heron's Nest BotanicalsLovely, peaceful, and just what we needed” are ftting words to describe Flicker’s Nest, located just 35 minutes east of Bellingham.
Merlin, a friendly bear of a dog, greeted us upon our arrival and Erick, his knowledgeable human and host extraordinaire showed us to our yurt and provided easy to understand instructions for its amenities, and we happily found everything to be exactly as described. One might think of a yurt with no electricity or Wi-Fi as “off the grid”, but ours had so many features (stove, heater, paraffin lamps, potable water) that functioned quite well and made our stay pleasant.
The spacious, heated bathroom was also very nice and just a few yards away, providing electricity, an easy-to-use self-composting toilet and walk-in shower with earth-friendly soap, shampoo, body oil and plush towels; perfect for after a strenuous hike in one of the region's gorgeous parks and wilderness areas.
We slept quite soundly amid the farm’s idyllic setting, thanks to a very comfortable queen-size bed with a plush, firm mattress, clean sheets, comforters and pillows, supported by an attractive hardwood frame (handmade by Erick and his two children). Two windows and a glass entrance door provided ample daylight, ventilation and nature viewing; in fact, one morning we were delighted to see a herd of majestic elk grazing peacefully in the meadow!
