When European settlers arrived in the 1850s, burning the prairie all but ceased and that, along with the introduction of many new exotic species of animals, crop plants and weeds, began the degradation of the landscape. Over time our site was used to graze sheep and then raise pheasants (from 1944-1999). It was slated for housing development but several citizens rose up and prevented that from happening. Now the Pacific Rim Institute, a private nonprofit organization is the steward of this precious jewel of central Whidbey and the Pacific Northwest. We have a five-acre remnant prairie with over 80 species of native plants - critical to the restoration of degraded lands throughout the Salish Sea region. We have over two miles of walking trails for you. They traverse our prairie, savannas and forests. The land is full of color when the native wildflowers bloom from early spring through early autumn. The Bamboo cabin is very private and has everything you need to just hang out. Saltgrass's location allows for many fun outdoor activities such as hiking at Kukutali Preserve State Park, crabbing, fishing, birding, bicycling and playing on the beach, my kids actually found a bottle with a message inside years ago. Alternatively, you could explore the many little shops in the towns of La Conner and Anacortes. There are multiple activities available, I would suggest calling ahead in order to book kayaking, rock climbing, whale watching, or a sailing charter. You could easily take a day trip to the San Juan Islands by taking a ferry ride out of Anacortes, walk on or book ahead if you are taking your car. Also, the Swinomish Casino and golf course are within two miles. While you're here you may meet our pup Turner, we also have two cats and several chickens. On the property are your hosts Jeri and Nancy, as well as our handyman Sean, Saltgrass boasts beautiful flowers, vegetable gardens, fruit trees, and yes, the Bay. We try to live harmoniously with the land. We would love to share our space with you! Due to potential freezing weather and vulnerable water pipes, we are taking the Bamboo cabin offline for December 1 through February 28. You are welcome to reach out and arrange a stay, weather permitting we may be able to accommodate you. Even closer is Whitehorse Regional Trail (great for biking, walking and horseback riding) built on the bed of the former BNSF railroad through the North Stillaguamish River Valley, spanning over 27 miles. The nearly level trail meanders through the valley, rewarding visitors with picturesque, landscape views of forests, farmland, streams and rivers, and mountain vistas. Sites have a generous fire pit and access to a Porta-Potty. For bathing I recommend cool dip in the Stillaguamish River. In season there is also fishing, snowshoeing, concerts at the blue grass festival grounds, a rodeo, and so much more.

Even with all the little enclave of buildings, The Purple Cottage retains a private feel all to itself, with reliable Wi-Fi available at the cottage. . It is located in a quiet little neighborhood, about 6 miles from Langley & 6 miles from Freeland.. Private beach access is across the road and a 15 minute walk up the street, where you can beach comb & explore the shoreline out at our little point. The *Purple Cottage* -- was found & salvaged (recycled!)-- moved onto the back of my property in 2012. This 16 X 12' place has been my studio in the past, but has offered overflow for friends & ; family. Nestled in the woods and ever-so-private, the cottage has a pull-out double futon, plus a small sleeping loft and can accommodate 1 -2 nicely (we will consider 3 if you have a small child, but it would be a tight fit!... There is a very small sleeping loft in the cottage.). There is a “en suite kitchen in the cottage that has a small fridge, microwave, and two burner stovetop cooking unit. The cottage offers privacy in a wooded garden setting. The bathhouse, with hot shower, vanity and; toilet --are all steps away (and covered) from the main cabin. The Purple Cottage sits on a shy wooded acre, with greenbelt buffers all around, maximizing the sense of privacy. our vintage Shasta Trailer across the driveway of the Purple Cottage is currently used as a music studio (and rarely as family/guest overflow), and I have my own small Artist Studio located also on the back of the property. Even with all the little enclave of buildings, The Purple Cottage retains a private feel all to itself, with reliable Wi-Fi available at the cottage. . It is located in a quiet little neighborhood, about 6 miles from Langley & 6 miles from Freeland.. Private beach access is across the road and a 15 minute walk up the street, where you can beach comb & explore the shoreline out at our little point. The private deck off the side of the Purple Cottage offers views of the gardens & flora, and has a little gas barbecue. There is also a delightful hot tub on the deck, which is a wonderful feature. An outdoor kitchen on the edge of the woods allows a roomier “camp cooking” experience with Colman stove & cold running water (season permitting). We are located 6 miles from the picturesque town of Langley and equal distance from Freeland, on the south end of Whidbey. Our area is very *bike-able* and either direction will get you to town! The Purple Cottage offers a rustic retreat in a place that feels far away, but is an hour & a half from the bustling city of Seattle!

Wow! Such a unique spot. Definitely want to return in the summer! This small cabin has all you need, and very cute. The unique location, eagles and waterfowl and a cool dog named Turner really add to the experience. Our pugs loved the place!

Weekend Trip to Valhalla Tree Farm

The cabin at Valhalla once again proved to be a wonderful autumn destination to relax amongst the trees, listen to the babbling stream, soak in the sun atop Look Out Rock and cook up some good food around the campfire. I can't say enough good things about this place, it is really an oasis of calm.

Weekend Trip to Valhalla Tree Farm

The A-Frame is spectacular. The host is kind, welcoming, accommodating, and a joy to work with. I've now visited this and the same owners' other cabin 3-4 times and will continue to! Comparing the 2 below (I love them both - just depends on what you're looking for) Similarities: --Both have: -super- fire pit areas, great views (one woods, one more open), privacy, keypad lock on door, access to trails, gas-powered indoor burner for cooking, outdoor shower with hot water (in season), ~4" foam mattresses on all beds, parking for at least 2 vehicles, picnic table, outdoor chairs and table on a deck. Differences: --The A-frame has side-by-side sleeping arrangements, wider than a king bed, so great for singles AND great for couples. The cabin has bunk beds. --The A-frame has some pots, pans, and dishes to help on a rainy day. Last I was there, the other cabin didn't have dishes/cookware. --Running sink water at each (in season), indoors at A-frame and outdoors at cabin. --The cabin has gas-powered heat and the A-frame has a wood stove. --The A-frame has a composting toilet, cabin has an outhouse. --The tables at each are different orientation - A-frame's can be folded up/down but you sit side-by-side. Cabin is 2 benches and you face each other. Seriously, though, you can't go wrong with either!

Weekend Trip to Wild Hearts on Whidbey

We enjoyed our stay at the Glasshouse! The concept is really cool and we enjoyed the large space. Rochelle was responsive and quickly was able to find someone to fix the woodstove when we were having problems. If you are not confident in starting a fire I would definitely bring a fire starter. I am confident in my fire making skills, but we were not able to get a fire going, which made for a chilly stay. It feels relevant to note that the weather forecast was incredibly rainy so while the wood was dry, the humidity definitely had an effect (nobody's fault). Luckily there is a baseboard heater in the bedroom space as well as electric blankets so we were plenty warm at night! The dishwashing/handwashing station wasn't super obvious to us, and we hope in the future there will be a sink space to do these things.

Weekend Trip to Simple Roots Ranch

We had a wonderful stay at the potting shed for our 2nd anniversary! Dave and Sharon are great and hospitable hosts who have put so much love and care into their property and this cabin. We had everything we needed and more and even though it was a very rainy weekend, we still got to enjoy the trails and gardens on the property with some raincoats on!! We woke up on our last morning to some delicious muffins dropped off in the kitchen and Dave cut us some mushrooms to take home with us! The kitchen was well-stocked and with it being super chilly outside the shower and kitchen sink still got warm!! This is such a cozy and peaceful place with all of the amenities that you’d need but with an outdoorsy glamping perk! We will definitely be back!
