Retreat to relax at Chuckanut Hills Farm and Campground, a 20-acre energy-regenerative, off-grid family farm nestled at the foot of Anderson Mountain and surrounded by thousands of acres of forest. 30 minutes south of Bellingham in the Chuckanut Mountains, the only finger of the Cascade Mountain Range that reaches all the way to the Salish Sea. This wooded forest is part of the Puget Lowland Forest Eco-Region. These hills were the native home of the Saquantch people, a Salish coast tribe that fished and hunted the mountains surrounding Lake Whatcom. They lived in long lodge homes and were later pushed out by the invading Lummi Tribe. The Lummi Tribe was later pushed out by Western logging companies, and the entire mountainous region was heavily logged for a number of years. Where our farm now rests was once the second of many logging camps built by Ed English, and he cut our gravel farm road in 1900; a railroad ran through the lower part of our property, taking logs from Lake Whatcom down to the little boom town of Seattle. Our intention while being caretakers of this ancestral land is to restore native plants, raise heirloom produce and heritage animals, and provide a restful nature paradise for people looking to spend time in the outdoors.

Homestead owner Ian Woofenden is an expert in renewable energy systems. He's lived off-grid at the homestead for 40-plus years, where he raised his large family and managed several small businesses. He now consults, sells, writes, and teaches about renewable energy in the U.S. and in Central America. If your idea of a great getaway is to help out and do physical work, just ask Ian. There's always something going on at the homestead, including garden and orchard work, trail building, wood cutting, construction, sawmilling, and more. Ian built this place, and has a broad knowledge of lots of homestead and sustainability topics. He loves sharing his knowledge and experience with guest, students, and interns. This land has passed through many families but was first "managed" by Salish Indians who burned the prairie and harvested native plants for food, medicine, clothing, charms and more for 10,000 years. When European settlers arrived in the 1850s, burning the prairie all but ceased and that, along with the introduction of many new exotic species of animals, crop plants and weeds, began the degradation of the landscape. Over time our site was used to graze sheep and then raise pheasants (from 1944-1999). It was slated for housing development but several citizens rose up and prevented that from happening. Now the Pacific Rim Institute, a private nonprofit organization is the steward of this precious jewel of central Whidbey and the Pacific Northwest. We have a five-acre remnant prairie with over 80 species of native plants - critical to the restoration of degraded lands throughout the Salish Sea region. We have over two miles of walking trails for you. They traverse our prairie, savannas and forests. The land is full of color when the native wildflowers bloom from early spring through early autumn. Please use the waterproof pet blanket provided for the sofa and bed. Guests bring the animal onto the property at their own risk. The booking guest is liable for any damages that pets cause. (We will have to charge a cleaning fee if your dog leaves behind a mess or causes damage.) We find that most people are cooperative and responsible with their pets. Retreat to relax at Chuckanut Hills Farm and Campground, a 20-acre energy-regenerative, off-grid family farm nestled at the foot of Anderson Mountain and surrounded by thousands of acres of forest. 30 minutes south of Bellingham in the Chuckanut Mountains, the only finger of the Cascade Mountain Range that reaches all the way to the Salish Sea. This wooded forest is part of the Puget Lowland Forest Eco-Region. These hills were the native home of the Saquantch people, a Salish coast tribe that fished and hunted the mountains surrounding Lake Whatcom. They lived in long lodge homes and were later pushed out by the invading Lummi Tribe. The Lummi Tribe was later pushed out by Western logging companies, and the entire mountainous region was heavily logged for a number of years. Where our farm now rests was once the second of many logging camps built by Ed English, and he cut our gravel farm road in 1900; a railroad ran through the lower part of our property, taking logs from Lake Whatcom down to the little boom town of Seattle. Our intention while being caretakers of this ancestral land is to restore native plants, raise heirloom produce and heritage animals, and provide a restful nature paradise for people looking to spend time in the outdoors.

This land has passed through many families but was first "managed" by Salish Indians who burned the prairie and harvested native plants for food, medicine, clothing, charms and more for 10,000 years. When European settlers arrived in the 1850s, burning the prairie all but ceased and that, along with the introduction of many new exotic species of animals, crop plants and weeds, began the degradation of the landscape. Over time our site was used to graze sheep and then raise pheasants (from 1944-1999). It was slated for housing development but several citizens rose up and prevented that from happening. Now the Pacific Rim Institute, a private nonprofit organization is the steward of this precious jewel of central Whidbey and the Pacific Northwest. We have a five-acre remnant prairie with over 80 species of native plants - critical to the restoration of degraded lands throughout the Salish Sea region. We have over two miles of walking trails for you. They traverse our prairie, savannas and forests. The land is full of color when the native wildflowers bloom from early spring through early autumn. Our 28 acres are located in between maple falls and glacier, Wa, directly on Mt Baker Hwy on the way to Beautiful Mt Baker. Ben and I run a chemical free farm, on which we raise 7 and 1/2 acres of veggie and flower. 15 acres of pastureland on which we raise pasture raised chicken, as well as biannual lamb and beef. The remainder of our land is breathtaking pacific northwest forest that is boarded by the Bay to Baker trail. Our campsites range between walk in wooded sites, and car camping sites that are open field sites next to the tree line. We provide wagons in our cart corral area to make it more convenient for the very short walk in. ( no more then a 200 foot walk in) We have a beautiful cedar grove to enjoy for lounging and picnics. The Bay to Baker trail borders our property, so it is just steps away and includes a 45 min round walk to a quaint little waterfall (maple falls). As well as a nature loop trail. You can also walk the other direction on the trail over a boardwalk. This direction walks along the back of the farm and allows you to see the veggie fields from a distance. Yofu can continue on the bay to baker trail for a nice walk. There is a conservation area, just a quarter mile drive down the road. With access to the Nooksack river, that includes several nice swimming spots and a couple nice walking trials. Silver Lake is just 3.8 miles away. It has a great recreation area, fun for the whole family. Just a heads up , you will probably lose service on your drive up here. But you will get service back when you are here. We suggest putting the map in your phone before you leave. Google maps will take you just past the farm, and apple maps will stop you too soon. So you are looking for the large kragnes family farms sign in the driveway. pull in and follo the camping signs to the back.

The description of the place is perfectly honest. Expect a visit from fluffy dogs and lots of farm and wilderness sounds. I heard a barred owl when I first arrived. Tasty water and the sauna and bathroom/shower is perfect!

Reg’s hundred acre wood is a charming mix of huts and outbuildings new and old. The vegetation overgrowth and misty air conceal various construction materials and antiques around the property. Dishes and coffee are available, and the BBQ worked as long as you can squeeze into the narrow place where it’s situated. The washroom is cute, the kitchen is slated for demolition, and the cabin we stayed in was warm. Reg was enthusiastic about showing us around the property, and introducing us to the sheep.

Our pup was a little too interested in the farm animals so we did keep her on leash, but she had a great time sniffing around on a long lead. Jacob was so friendly, checking in to make sure we had everything we needed. Would highly recommend for an upgraded camping experience.

Ian is an inspiration, and staying on his property is more than just a fun adventure, it helped my family disconnect from our busy lives and reconnected with nature and each other. Although the barn is rustic and open, it still stood up to the rainy cold weather and allowed us to extend our camping season. We enjoyed the fire pit while we could, and we were happy to have the covered outdoor kitchen as well. The composting toilet was a unique experience somehow making even a bathroom trip a bit magical as it provides for privacy while also giving you a view of the beautiful forest. Seeing what he has been able to transform this space into, has already inspired us to start our own projects. Ian's passion is contagious! The kids truly enjoyed the play area with the zipline, swings and giant seesaw! We will be planning another trip here for sure and we are looking forward to checking out the other lodging options and or the camping sites. Maybe we will get lucky enough for a warm summer adventure and enjoy swimming in the pond. Ian was very welcoming and full of great info. Anyone would be lucky to get to experience some time here!

Great, out of the way, place. Spots are well marked, wiht plenty of space between them for privacy. There are farm animals that free range, including sheep (that are very cute), so heads up that there's lots of poop around. Andrea has three incredibly friendly dogs that came to say hello, and lots of cats around that are friendly too. The sauna is a great feature. The only drawback is that the sauna/bathhouse is a bit of an uphill hike from the campsites. Just plan your bathroom trips. Otherwise, lovely overnight here.

Potable water is located from a spigot in the pasture. Choose from three camp sites: Eagle Eyrie, Owl Hollow, or Hawk Nest. Sites are roomy enough for RV campers and ideal for a private Pacific Northwest getaway. Our property is in close proximity to downtown Bellingham and downtown Ferndale (only 5 miles north or south) and all the delicious restaurants, live music, and parks they provide; but is nestled into a pastoral refuge. Seattle is 1.5 hours south and Vancouver is 1 hour north. Free water and sewer dump are available at the Lummi Market, within one mile of the house. Property owners, Kim & Jeff, live onsite if you have questions or need anything; however the camp sites are tucked away such that the camping area is entirely separate. Property is accessed down a long gravel driveway on the east side of Rural Avenue, just across the street from a log cabin/house. Hi! Welcome to Custer Family Glamping! We are so glad you are here ;) Our 10-acre property is located in Custer, WA in the Northwest corner of Whatcom County. Custer is an easy 20-minute drive to Bellingham, 10-15 minutes to 2 coastal beaches (Birch Bay and Semiahmoo), and only 10 minutes to Blaine and the Canadian border. We love to host our friends and show people around our beautiful slice of the PNW🌲 We are a big family, so we designed all of our glamping sites to be kid and pet friendly and big enough to fit families of 2-6. A little luxury and ease for the grownups and a magical nature experience for the kids. Kids are allowed to "just be" here. Cellular reception isn't great but no one seems to notice. Not when they are busy building forts, roasting marshmallows and climbing up tree houses. The intention infused into all of our spaces is a Hygge* (pronounced hoo-gah) vibe. *Hygge is a calm, comfortable time with people you love. The absence of frustrations; often enjoyed with warm drinks, cozy blankets and candlelight or a fire.❤️ County Noise Statement: We love living in rural Whatcom County and we know land owners in our area love it too. In fact, their enthusiasm for the great outdoors is so high that sometimes they can generate sounds that will travel throughout the day. These are likely sounds you are not accustomed to hearing in a traditional neighborhood. Distant noises such as: -county shooting range located a few miles away -tractors -mowers & chainsaws -ATV vehicles -barking dogs -farm animals (goat, horses, crowing roosters) -wild animals (early morning bird song and owls at night) -children laughing -adult voices -train horn Evenings are generally very quiet and peaceful as night falls with the exception of holiday weekends as the enthusiasm for owning property in the country may ramp up ;) We tell you all this in order to be fully transparent about noise potential. If the potential for noise and the nearby shooting range will be a damper on your glamping experience, no worries! We totally get it! Our place is probably not the best fit. If you want to bring your kids to a place where they can build a fort, take a break from their screens and build family memories over a campfire, then you will love it here! The Island Oasis site has a medium strength wifi signal.** JET NOISE DISCLAIMER: Most of north Whidbey is in the training flight path for NASWI (including our property) so you will likely hear (and see!) navy jets overhead during your stay. If you are sensitive to noise this may not be a good location for you. We live and work on the property (our house and shop are both ~100 feet from the Island Oasis site). We are very respectful of guest privacy but easy to reach if you need anything.
