All of the land on the gravel road in which we live was at one time a large operating farm. The original farmhouse is still present at the end of the gravel road.
In recent years the farm land was sub divided. My husband Jacob and I purchased this piece of property 8 years ago. We absolutely love it here and this land is our own slice of paradise.
We have 13 acres of private seclusion with a quiet and peaceful creek spot for camping on the back side of our property. We love having a place where we feel we can be away from it all! Also at the same time we are only a short drive away from downtown Lynchburg as well as quick access to route 460.
We enjoy that we can get on the river quickly and we frequently take advantage of the beauty of kayaking the James River. Together Jacob and I find tranquility while camping and exploring new places. We are excited to share our slice of heaven with you and meet people who share our love for the great outdoors. :)

The cabin is located on an old apple orchard and budding homestead. It is off-grid and powered by solar. It is a short walk from the parking area (75 steps uphill). The cabin is one room with a kitchenette, hot outdoor shower, and outdoor compost toilet. The cabin can sleep up to three people with a queen bed, futon, and pullout couch. The kitchen includes a gas range, mini fridge, a sink with running water, and basic kitchen cook wear. A propane heater is available for extra warmth on a chilly night. A shelf equipped with books and board games. A propane grill sits on the front porch, and a fire pit out front. The hot outdoor shower and compost toilet are 25 steps from the front door tucked into the tree line. The pond sits in front of the cabin, a picnic table sets by the edge.
We love living simply, and immersed in nature, and have designed the space for others who also share this passion. We often see deer, turkey, bear, fox, and coyote. Maybe you will too! Our location is 15 minutes from the Appalachian Trail and James River access. The Jefferson Washington National Forest is nearby and offers opportunities for visiting waterfalls, hiking, mountain biking, climbing, and paddling. Downtown Lynchburg is 20 minutes away with great restaurants, farmers markets and shopping.
We are a growing homestead. We are planting fruits trees, cultivating shiitake mushrooms, raising ducks and tending gardens here and have farm fresh products that are seasonally available to guests just ask!

The Farm was originally named 2nd 4o by my parents. They planned to live the 2nd forty years of their lives together on the farm. My parents both grew up on the southside of Chicago - where having a tree in your yard meant that you had "made it". They decided to use the land to grow Christmas trees. This did not last long :) but the saplings my dad planted by hand are still here & maybe 70' tall!
Then my husband & I bought The Farm in 2017 for the 2nd forty years of our life & my parents built their little house right here. My husband and I immediately knew that our dream was to grow a different kind of "tree", so in 2019 we were among the first group to receive our license to grow hemp. We are passionate about both the hemp and cannabis plants!
In 2020 when it finally became legal to grow cannabis, we immediately added that to our garden as well and 2nd 40 to 420 was born, or shall I say planted. We currently rent out our 2 RV's 3 Yurts & primitive sites , we also offer group bookings & Canna-friendly B&B options. We plan to add septic & electric hook-ups for RV's in the near future.

Our 65 acre farm is secluded and peaceful. We have a small pond with catfish, bluegill, large mouth bass (catch and release only) and a gentle creek. We have chickens, sheep, a pig, cows and diary goats. Enjoy a walk down to the pond and take a picture by the old farm house (from the early 1800's) or explore history in the cemetery. You could also take the kids for a hike in the forest and search for mushrooms. At the end of the day you can kick back by the fire pit, stargaze and make some s'mores. We are just over an hour north of Durham, NC, two hours southwest of Richmond, VA, and 30 minutes east of Danville, VA. Our property is 204 acres of beautiful wilderness, in an international Dark Sky zone (you can see the milky way on a clear night), where you can usually hear nothing other than the calls of the animals.
The property is accessed via a half mile dirt and grass road that drops you off at the main camping area at the Old Tobacco Barn. From there you have access to a composting toilet and fire circle.
Roughly half the property was cleared and is open and overgrown with brush. The other half of the property is various types and stages of forest, from young to old.
We have 5 waterways that I have counted so far (it's a lot of land!), including 1.5 miles of Sandy Creek, which is more of a small river than a creek, beautiful swimmable natural springs, and a half acre pond (with beavers!). We have two kayaks that you can use on the pond, and you can bring tubes or kayaks and paddle down Sandy Creek all the way to Banister River a few miles downstream.
Camping is available throughout the property, although you will see several marked and prepped sites along the road or in the woods. This is rustic camping, meaning that you can drive up to some camping sites, but others are off the road and require a bit of trekking through brush, trails, or woods.
This area of the state is an international dark sky zone, and the views at night are glorious - the milky way is clearly visible, you can generally catch shooting stars with regularity on any clear night, and if you bring binoculars or a telescope, you have a clear view of most of the sky.
If you enjoy wild plants, foraging, bird watching, tracking, or generally getting out into a natural space, then you will enjoy the diversity of the wildlife and plant life on the property.
Animals that we have verified on the land include Deer (lots!), Racoons, Cayote, Turkey, Black Bear, Fox, and a large variety of birds and other critters that we haven't identified.
We have house sized boulders along Sandy Creek that you can climb on, and the creek itself is clean and swimmable. There is lots to explore throughout the property and, most of all, it's a wonderful place to rest and relax out in nature.
A few things to keep in mind:
* The road is a dirt road, meaning that it turns muddy after it rains. Please be mindful of this and park at the front and walk in if it is raining or has rained the day before you arrive. Also, if it looks like it will rain while you are on site, you may want to move your vehicle to the front of the property to make it easier to get out when you leave. Having said that, the road is good and any car can drive it without issue when it is dry.
* Smaller campers and trailers are welcome on the property as well, although we do not have a place to dump/empty your septic, so please take waste off site.
* We do not have showers or potable water on site, so you will need to pack water in with you. This is rustic camping.
* We do have a composting toilet - please drop a handful of wood shavings into the bucket when you are done. For folks who are comfortable doing so, please consider urinating outside rather than in the composting toilet. ;)

Situated at the foot of the Blue Ridge Mountains and bordering the Jefferson National Forest, Thunder BRidge has scenic, large, private tent sites and cabins in the woods for those who want to experience camping at its finest. Many of the sites border Elk Creek. Our RV sites are large, flat and at the edge of the forest in a well kept open green space.
Our 100 acres was originally a camp built by the Civilian Conservation Corp in the "30s and early '40s, then a boys' juvenile detention center and Big Brothers'/Big Sisters' camp, which closed in 2009. The tent sites and cabins are in the forest, away from the buildings out front, but you're free to walk around and check out the historic site. Most of the buildings out front are artist studios (currently for 16 artists). We like to share the camp with others and watch it come back to life.
All within a short driving distance are the Natural Bridge, wineries, breweries, Natural Bridge Zoo, Safari Park, Dinosaur Kingdom, Appalachian Trail, Blue Ridge Parkway, James River, historic Lexington, Devil's Marbleyard, Glenwood Horse Trail, swimming holes, etc. We have river access 2 miles up the road if you'd like to fish or put your kayak or canoe in. Truly, there is something nearby for everyone. We'd be happy to give you recommendations of things to see and do. If you are a star gazer you won't be disappointed by our dark sky.
We want to share our property with those who want to stay for more than one night, so we do not accept inquiries of single night stays. We also don't offer longterm rentals as we focus on short term camping.

We had an exceptional weekend at Buttermilk Bluff! Katie & Andy are wonderful hosts! The welcome bag is incredibly generous! We actually stayed at site 2, as we were the only ones there. The sites are very wide and well equipped and well maintained. We had such a great time strolling around with our dogs throughout the day, and watching the cows against the beautiful horizon while we relaxed! The pile of firewood, storage boxes, and super convenient dump station are huge bonuses!

One of a Kind experience. See what I did there. Seriously, wonderful host and farmers. The property has all kinds of spirituality that take the form of areas with hammocks, yurts, fairy outposts, curated trails, event areas, added refrigeration and other amenities for what "campers forget". I learned a lot from Amy about a lot of things. She is a fantastic artisan grower as well. Prepare to enter a sanctuary and to leave feeling balanced and full of goodness.

We loved camping here! It was a beautiful piece of land that was far enough removed from other campers that you could feel secluded. The earth was flat and malleable from the clay (but not too messy), making great terrain for tent stakes and setting up anchors for the dogs. Great commodities and clear, effective communication from the host- Immensely helpful and accommodating every time we reached out. Our puppies loved the sound of the wind in the trees and their interest was continuously piqued by the roaming fowl. We particularly liked the white turkeys at sunrise! Definitely would love to return.

Great campground! We needed something last minute due to a change of plans so we were thrilled this place was open. The pond was super cute, we were delighted to see ducks and other birds. The hosts dogs were also so sweet and hung out with us around our fire! What a treat! Def recommend! Her camp is situated in the most beautiful rural neighborhood, driving in at sunset was awesome.

Originally I booked without hesitation, however when we saw rain coming in, I didn't know what to expect..
Katie reached out promptly and gave insutruction on how to get there and what the property entrance looks like for reference.
I drive a 2WD Tacoma and had no issue getting out there; the road is graveled straight to the sites!
We were greeted at the site to the most thoughtful smores kit and thorough guide on the property, surrounding farm, and where to visit nearby.
It is accompanied with a potable water spigot and luckily a nice big stack of firewood...
Last but not least, around 7:30pm I witnessed only what I can describe as the most beautiful sunset in Virginia.
Over our two night stay we got to see Peaks of Otter and more in fog, clouds, full sun, moonlit sky...
You truly do get to experience some awesome sites at such a convenient place to camp.
10/10 would recommend and will probably be booking again
- we drove from Richmond, so about 2 1/2 hrs each way, it is easily worth it

We stayed at site WP3 and really enjoyed it. The table is nicely shaded, there’s a fire ring, and plenty of flat ground space to comfortably set up our 10x10 tent.
It’s also a short walk to the bathhouse, which was clean and convenient we were even able to wash our dishes there.
One of the things I loved most was the spacing between sites. You can see neighboring sites, but you won’t really hear other campers. It’s surrounded by trees, which gives a great sense of privacy.

This is the second time we have stayed at Thunder BRidge. We love it here. Adam is attentive to the needs of the guest. The sites and Bathrooms are always clean. We stay in the RV site with our camper but the primative sites are great. The only negative is RV site 1 is the only site with electricity and water. Otherwise everything is perfect.

It was a great stay! The camp site was secluded enough but close enough to the bath house. It was nice and quiet.
Check out the rec room behind the bathhouse! Adam was very responsive and on top of things! The story behind Thunder BRidge is great and what a good way to revive the property and bring it back to life!
Firewood was a good price for the seasoned dry wood delivered to our site.
If you stay on a clear night, I highly recommend to wander to the ball field to see the stars!

It was such an amazing space. We stayed in the trailer and could hear the animals and see a million stars. As someone who's dreamed of her own eventual farm, meeting the donkeys was the best!!
Great to have a cozy and clean place to stay. The only drawback was the actual bedroom. The main had a small bed and no dresser or anything to put stuff on and one small nightstand. Nothing that would stop me from coming back though!

I tent camped on Wendy’s land and had an enjoyable stay. The directions made it easy to get to and I arrived to find a nice clean site to set up for the night. The on-site portable toilet was also nice and clean. I had my bike with me and enjoyed a ride along the nice and quiet country roads that evening.

We loved tent camping at Chris's site #9! We were less than 10 minutes from the Peaks of Otter trailheads, with awesome views. The babbling stream makes for great background noise and the wood chips make a pretty soft space to pitch your tent (the other spots are gravel). You can keep your vehicle right next to you, which is quite convenient. There's a rope chair, fire pit, and picnic table.
The potable water spigot is a few hundred feet away, near the bathrooms. Bathroom amd shower did the trick, nothing fancy. Just one bathroom with a single person shower in the same room. Bring your own hand towel.

We really enjoyed our stay at James River depot! We stayed at site 4. There was plenty of space and great river access. Each site is tucked in the trees along the river so there’s good privacy from the other campers. The porta potty was very clean and convenient. We also love that you can purchase wood onsite. The river and Mountain View’s are great. The trains are close and loud but they didn’t bother us. I think it adds character to the stay. The only thing I didn’t love about our site was that it had three hard plastic style picnic tables and benches that weren’t in the best shape and just kinda junky looking. It takes away from the natural beauty of the site. No table or just one wood picnic table would feel so much better in the space. Overall we loved the property and would definitely return!
