In the town of Wakefield you’ll find gas stations, dollar stores, a Value food market and if you want (to go) food we have that also. Plus it’s home to The Virginia Diner. This was our second time camping at Phantom Hill and it has easily become our absolute favorite place to camp as a family! Kathryn is truly a wonderful host who has thought of everything to make the experience simply phenomenal. We previously stayed at the Hummingbird campsite but this time we decided to try Waterthrush and it was just as lovely! We loved the string lights and hammocks, and it’s so convenient having a grill, chairs and tables all available to use! The forest is so beautiful and we loved walking the trails and my kids especially loved the treasure hunt! It was so cool seeing the mushroom farm too! As if there isn’t enough to do, they even have an Imagination Station where the kiddos can paint rocks and play games! This place is just MAGICAL. ✨ Kathryn is always such an accommodating host! When my husband and I realized we had a hole in our air mattress we brought, I texted Kathryn about renting a mattress pad and she was there in minutes! She goes above and beyond for her guests! Also highly recommend purchasing the natural soap from the Honor Shop. It smells amazing!!! If you want a very private camping experience with great perks and beautiful foliage, trust me, this is your spot. We cannot wait to come back!

My group had a wonderful time camping at the Hummingbird site this weekend! The space was fantastic with plenty of tent space and areas to sit around the fire. We ended up using the grill and picnic table for dinner before roasting smores over the fire. I would 100% recommend.

Truly phenomenal camping spot! This spot was a perfect combination of wild (it felt very private and quiet) and well-appointed (awesome site setup with chairs, hammocks, and other camping amenities). We were able to relax and enjoy ourselves with walks around the property‘s winding trails and delight in all the little things the owner had done to make it unique (don’t miss Mushroom Land!). We also went to the nearby brewery/winery and had a fun evening listening to live music and drinking tasty drinks. We’re already talking about when we can go back! This is a don’t-miss spot if you’re looking to get away.

4 nights at Phantom Hill Forest Retreats

We stayed at Waterthrush (all the campsites are named after birds!) with our group of 8 kids ages 2-8 and 6 adults. We were able to fit three 4-6 person tents at the site with a little creativity. It was so nice to have the seating, grill, and hammocks provided. We had four wonderful nights there. There was minor road noise, FYI, but the site is great and private from the other sites and public areas of the property. The composting toilet/outhouse was very clean and pleasant. Kathryn was very responsive and a truly wonderful host. She was gracious and accommodating with a booking error I made, and she helped save the day when one of our vehicles needed a jump start. The whole property is beautiful. We loved exploring the trails, mushroom operations, and the imagination station. Our kids were in heaven with the trails, creek, and treasure boxes and gnomes to discover. We have already booked a trip for next year!

Best place ever! We came and had our first camping trip as a family. Marvin and his wife were extremely kind, understanding, patient and supportive. My ten year old son absolutely loved camping here at the farm and Marvin made us feel like we were at our other home. We are already planning to go back! What a dream of a trip! Thank you Marvin for ensuring my son and husband are convinced camping is our thing. And being only a hour from Downtown Norfolk, oh we will def return often as we can.

Such a well-maintained campground! The staff were super friendly and I just kept being so impressed by how clean everything was. Every single time I went into the bathroom, day or night, it looked as if it had just been wiped down. The pool was nicely warm and relaxing, and even though I didn't travel with kids, I think it's great that they had a playground and all kinds of different activities for them. I don't usually look for electric hook up when I travel, but this was a nice luxury this time. Would definitely stay here again!
