Located 5 miles from the Blue Ridge Parkway and Appalachian trail is a small camping area with a bathhouse that includes a toilet and hot shower. A mountain stream rushes through the campground providing a peaceful and tranquil stay. During the months of November through May I can stock the stream with rainbow trout during your stay. Book a stocking through the hipcamp app experiences for for $55 a day 6 fish limit. Outside enjoy a shady relaxing nap next to the stream. At night enjoy a fire ( firewood sold here) while looking at the stars up above. During the day, explore the Blue Ridge Mountains 5 miles away with very popular hikes and waterfalls. Sharp Top Mt and Flat Top trail heads are 5 miles away. Apple Orchard Falls trailhead 15 minutes away. The James River is 20 minutes away which offers canoeing and kayaking. 5 miles south of the campground is Bedford which has food, shopping and historical attractions. Wineries, orchards and national forest are just minutes away.

Situated at the foot of the Blue Ridge Mountains and bordering the Jefferson National Forest, Thunder BRidge has scenic, large, private tent sites and cabins in the woods for those who want to experience camping at its finest. Many of the sites border Elk Creek. Our RV sites are large, flat and at the edge of the forest in a well kept open green space.
Our 100 acres was originally a camp built by the Civilian Conservation Corp in the "30s and early '40s, then a boys' juvenile detention center and Big Brothers'/Big Sisters' camp, which closed in 2009. The tent sites and cabins are in the forest, away from the buildings out front, but you're free to walk around and check out the historic site. Most of the buildings out front are artist studios (currently for 16 artists). We like to share the camp with others and watch it come back to life.
All within a short driving distance are the Natural Bridge, wineries, breweries, Natural Bridge Zoo, Safari Park, Dinosaur Kingdom, Appalachian Trail, Blue Ridge Parkway, James River, historic Lexington, Devil's Marbleyard, Glenwood Horse Trail, swimming holes, etc. We have river access 2 miles up the road if you'd like to fish or put your kayak or canoe in. Truly, there is something nearby for everyone. We'd be happy to give you recommendations of things to see and do. If you are a star gazer you won't be disappointed by our dark sky.
We want to share our property with those who want to stay for more than one night, so we do not accept inquiries of single night stays. We also don't offer longterm rentals as we focus on short term camping.

Awesome spot at Maple site on Ned’s land. Tons of space to set up our tent and camp. There were a couple of paths that led right down to the creek which our pup was able to play in. We went In March so there weren’t really any bugs and the weather was perfect. There were lights Ned hung up for the site but we weren’t sure how to cut them on. They weren’t really needed tho it was a nice touch. Thanks for a great quick getaway!

The camping spot is beautiful. I also booked last minute AND came after dark and Ned was so kind to show me where to go (as well as helping me to navigate around trees).
Between the lovely location and the wonderfully kind hosts, this is a great spot. Bonus that is super close to the Dragon’s Tooth trail parking lot.

The bathrooms were clean, the site was level and peaceful. Chris runs a Nice operation in an area where you'll find Absolutely beautiful countryside along your journey.
Heading north or south? You can avoid the Highways and hit the backroads around the cities at no extra time! We stayed one night.

This is an excellent camping site that feels secluded, but is not too far off the beaten path. My two young boys (5 and 7) had an awesome first real night out in the woods. They kept saying "this is the best day ever". A bonus being able to share it with my dad/their grandfather.
Ned came down to greet us after we'd arrived with a warm smile and could not have been more welcoming. We made camp, prepared dinner, sat around the fire, marveled at the maple sap collection operation, made up stories, skipped rocks, found toads, and slept under the stars. What a lucky group of guys we are to get to do that, and thanks to Ned for providing the opportunity.
The night after our trip I learned that many of our friends in Roanoke have also stayed at Savage Acres and we're now excited to plan a whole shindig with a bunch of families. Maybe when the weather is warmer and we can take advantage of the natural lazy river and firefly entertainment.

Weekend Trip to Arcadia Sanctuary
We had an absolutely incredible stay at this mountain yurt in Amherst, Virginia. We came in the winter months (because we’re a little crazy) and ended up getting stuck during a snowstorm — and somehow that made the whole experience even more unforgettable.
The hosts were beyond amazing. They went out of their way to make sure we were safe, comfortable, and taken care of the entire time. True hospitality. 11/10.
If you’re looking for peace, quiet, and a place to unplug and reset — this is it. Whether you want tranquility or you’re just trying to find yourself for a bit, this place delivers.
Also, we have to give a special shoutout to Buddy the dog, who kept us company and made the whole stay even better. Such a good boy and the perfect mountain host assistant.
And a big thank-you to the workers who helped us get out of the snow — we seriously appreciated the help more than you know.
Awesome place, awesome people, awesome experience. We’d recommend this stay to absolutely everyone.

This is such an amazing spot to relax and camp at. Each site is spaced out nicely. Level gravel parking which is great if you’re in a camper van like we use. So nice to have a heated bathhouse when it’s freezing out too. I’d love to come back in the warmer months to see everything filled in.

10 ft pop-up camper
This was an amazing little spot to camp! The water flowing right beside the campsite and the view of sharp top were absolutely stunning! It was nice to be able to order a bundle of wood at the site ready for our arrival. The bathroom was very clean and had a shower as well as washer and dryer. Chris was very quick to respond to questions. 10/10 highly recommended and will visit again!

This was an awesome camp experience! The pit toilet was spotless and checking in was easy. Adam was friendly and delivered some great firewood. There were a few thin, dead pines leaning precariously here and there, so I recommend scanning where you plan to set up your tent to avoid having one fall in the night or on a car (always a good idea anyway). Cool sculptures and artist vibe in the front and great proximity to Devil's Marbleyard!

27 ft travel trailer
We stayed for one night. We were booked at site 2, but Sydney let us move to site 1, which was larger and easier to level. The location is beautiful. Amazing views and very quiet. It’s a short drive to downtown Lexington, where we went for dinner. We were passing through, so didn’t do anything else. Sydney was quick to respond when we reached out. Would definitely stay again.
