We are a Nature Retreat bordering Nature Conservancy land along a tributary and up and down the Rappahannock River. You can hike along the stream down to the river and up and down the river. You can fish and float the river. There are no trails so a moderate level of fitness and comfort in the forest is needed. You can follow the water ways but it is wilderness. Camping there is primitive but available or you can camp or glamp at Earthwalk Ways Retreat. We are also adjacent to a 50 acre farm on the other side of the creek that is available for hiking. But our closest neighbor is nearly 300 feet away, and we happen to think riverside camping with a little civilization nearby is a pretty great trade-off. ⸻ If those realities feel unacceptable, we wish you luck finding a soundproof, neighbor-free, bird-mute utopia. But if you’re after a laid-back, laughter-filled, and unapologetically outdoor getaway on the banks of the South River — welcome. You’ve found it. Don’t forget your robe.

This is a very private and quiet location. You can settle in knowing that this listing includes a covered picnic area. Which has counter space for food prep and cooking that includes a small sink. But remember, it’s camping so you’ll need to come prepared with a camp stove for cooking, although I do have charcoal and propane grill’s at the picnic area. We are located within an hour from Wintergreen, numerous wineries, craft beer locations and numerous hiking destinations. Harmony Hut has fresh linens but please bring sleeping bags and/or sheets for the screened in bunkhouse. River access to the James River is a short drive to Howardsville. There you will also find a General Store which offers you the basics, such as Beer, Wine, Ice and a few grocery items. They make the best homemade sandwiches and grilled burgers. Direct river access can be provided via special request. I can also provide shuttling services. But this needs to be mentioned well before your stay as I don't live up there year around.

Spacious Skies Shenandoah Views is a serene slice of heaven, conveniently located just 20 minutes off I-81, yet still peacefully rural nestled within farmland atop a hill in Luray, Virginia. Surrounded by the Blue Ridge Mountains with views all around and from our cabin rentals, our campground is close to the Luray Caverns, the famed Skyline Drive in Shenandoah National Park, the Shenandoah River, and several Civil War sites. We offer both shady RV sites and open RV sites that can accommodate all sized RVs and trailers—we are big rig friendly! Each RV site includes a picnic table, fire ring, 30 or 50-amp electrical service, and sewer. We have deluxe patio sites and deluxe tent sites too! Our campground is in the heart of all that Virginia’s Shenandoah Valley has to offer. Hiking opportunities abound as Luray is the closest town to the Thornton Gap entrance of Shenandoah National Park, and is to the Skyline Drive, taking drivers along the crest of the Blue Ridge Mountains! The Luray Caverns, a national historic site, with it’s famous Great Stalacpipe Organ, are just a few minutes away, and tubing, canoeing, and white-water rafting adventure can be found at the nearby Shenandoah River. Museums and Civil War sites will feed your history-loving soul! Onsite we have a brand-new camp store! We also have a large pool and small pool, a gathering yurt for groups and an event pavilion, a playground, and a jumping pillow is in the works! We have two deluxe cabins and four deluxe yurts for more ways to appreciate the great outdoors with those additional creature comforts.

The site was very calming sitting between the lake and the pond. The pavilion provided excellent cover for the storms that passed through. Charles is a very gracious host and very helpful with directing us on the amenities provided. Loved the goats and chickens that greeted us each time we went up the hill. It was an excellent camping experience for our family.

Weekend Trip to River Bend Retreat

Great stay! Hot tub got super hot and the grounds were very peaceful. Trevor was very friendly and quick to help when the power was out initially. There was a great brewery 30 minutes away (Fine Creek) and Richmond 40 minutes away.

The bedroom has a privacy screen and all the windows have curtains.

Weekend Trip to Phantom Hill Forest Retreats

Had a great time group camping at Hummingbird site! Kathryn is a thoughtful and responsive host, the directions and maps provided made it easy to get to the site and navigate the trails. Driving into Hummingbird is a bit bumpy but not difficult at all with a vehicle thats not too close to the ground, and gives a neat view of the mushroom farm operation. All the campsites are spaced out far enough away from each other to get a real sense of privacy. The RV is better stocked with cookware and games than most Air BnBs I’ve been to, and the instructions for using the generator and water were clear and easy to follow. We had plenty of space to pitch tents, hearing the barred owls in the night was such a treat. Our group was a mix of seasoned campers and some outdoor not-so-enthusiasts, so this site was perfect for meeting those creature comfort needs while still getting an awesome camping experience. The honor system shop was another great treat! Really appreciated how clean the compost toilet and shower were too. This has easily been one of my favorite Hipcamp experiences. So much fun, highly recommend!

We loved our stay at the private pavilion! We opted to use it as our shelter, so we could easily keep our dogs enclosed. All the animals are friendly, the lakeside is beautiful, our fresh eggs were delicious. Friendly & welcoming host, although I felt terrible my dogs barked at him every time he tried to come by to say hello. We’d definitely love to stay again!

5 nights at Big Dipper Ranch camping - glamping

This place is fantastic. From the personal toilets to the wonderfully clean lake, Jud has created a beautiful camp experience for everyone. The adorable tents are roomy and clean. The goats and dogs are friendly and cute. Jud is such a great host and has so much kindness in his heart. He is more than happy to give you advice on the best things to do while visiting the area and welcomes all kind of company. Truly an amazing find and I would be surprised to find anyone who thinks otherwise. I will definitely be coming back as much as I possibly can. Thank you for everything, Jud and stay awesome!

10/10 We would give a higher score if we could! Kevin was so welcoming and happy to talk about the workings of the farm. No part of the farm was off lmits and we were able to interact with all of the animals, including the dogs :). The camp site itself is beautiful and kayaking on the pond was so nice. Would definetely come back again!

We had such a great time at the camp site! Kevin provided everything we needed to make this suburban girl feel like a woodswomen. The chairs in front of the tent were perfect for stargazing and kayaking on the pond at sunset was magical. We loved meeting some of the animals especially Mona the goat and their four sweet pups who tried to follow us home! 😊 We can’t wait to visit again soon!
