There is something for everyone to feel free to bring the whole family. DIRECTIONS: Once you are on Road Runner Circle, go past the house on the left with the Christmas lights on. Please continue down the road and follow the road around the curve to the left. The campsites will be on the left and side behind the rock walls. The campsite number that is booked is the campsite you will stay in. Additional details to note: - We now have an above ground pool to keep cool in during the summer! We offer a uniquely secluded setting with stunning views of the Chisos Mountains. Located just 7 miles from the entrance to Big Bend National Park, and 10 miles from the visitors' center at Big Bend Ranch State Park, it is a perfect base from which to explore all the hiking, boating, and scenic beauty that West Texas is known for. The arts, history, and entertainment of Terlingua Ghost Town are less than 2 miles away. Like most ruins in the Ghost Town, my stone house was built in the early 1900s to house a miner’s family from the nearby Rainbow Mine. I bought the property in 1986 and began restoring and rebuilding. In 2019 I retired here from NYC and began exploring possibilities for sustainable tourism. West Texas is one of the best places in the United States to view the Milky Way (both Big Bend parks are certified as International Dark Sky parks). We use shielded LED lighting around buildings and pathways to cut down on light pollution and optimize stargazing opportunities for our astrotourists. And we are applying for dark sky certification from the Texan By Nature program. Bear in mind that this is the desert, in all its rugged glory. There are critters, rocks, plants with thorns, slippery slopes, sink holes, rusted artifacts and broken glass from decades long past. Bring sturdy shoes and a flashlight, and stay on the paths! Our intention is to provide remote, low-density accommodation for folks who are respectful of the land.

The Tierra del Sol Basecamp is an open desert camping area located within Terlingua Ranch, 3 miles off of Hwy 118, 19 miles north of Study Butte and 22 miles to the entrance to Big Bend National Park. This region of far west Texas is well known for its remote ruggedness and beauty rapidly becoming the go-to place for those wanting to get away from it all, without having to spend a fortune to do it. It’s one of the last frontiers of North America and One of the only two National Parks in Texas. The Basecamp will reside on the 40 acre property. In the center is an area of approximately 6 acres flat, with rising limestone ridge lines to the east and west, open skyline to south with a view of Bofecillos Mountains, an area characterized by volcanic deposits of lava and ash-flow tuff and sedimentary deposits of conglomerates and sandstones. The four mountain tops; Packsaddle, Hen Egg, Panther and Agua Fria Mountains provide an amazing view during the day and at night, breathtaking night time views of the Milky Way and the multitudes of stars to gaze upon unlike any other place in North America. The morning sunrise over the eastern mesa brings its own spectacular views. Surrounding the 40 acres are many things of archaeological wonder. A Rock Hounds dream of minerals, stones and fossilized prehistoric microorganisms, as well as, the potential of finding the fossils of large prehistoric aquatic mammals. Yes, you are free to take a small sample of the thousands of quartz and calcite stones found in huge abundance. As you come to then end of Mailbox Rd., you'll see a residence to your left. This is "The Field Lab", owned by the well know sustainable engineer John Wells. If you'd like to pay him a visit, please contact him in advance.

Nestled within the rugged and mesmerizing landscape of Terlingua, our off-grid desert camp offers an unparalleled escape from the hustle and bustle of modern life. This camp is a sanctuary for those seeking solitude and a connection with the raw beauty of the desert. Nesting Star Camp is situated within the legendary Terlingua Ranch and is strategically located to provide easy access to the stunning offerings of Big Bend National Park, Big Bend Ranch State Park and the surrounding backcountry. The West entrance to Big Bend National Park is 23 miles from the camp. Big Bend Ranch State Park's East entrance is 38 miles from camp. The camp sits on 5 acres and is located 0.7 miles from Terlingua Ranch Road, which is a paved asphalt road leading to Hwy 118. The final 0.7 miles to the property consist of dirt and gravel roads maintained by the Property Owners Association of Terlingua Ranch (POATRI). These dirt and gravel roads leading to the camp are generally easily traversed, though they can become silty or muddy if it rains. In some areas, heavy rain may cause road flooding. We recommend driving an SUV or a truck, as low-profile cars may struggle depending on the road conditions that day. Please be aware that the roads within Terlingua Ranch, while publicly accessible, are located on private land. We kindly request that you not drive off of any roads, as the surrounding areas are all privately owned. While navigating the deeper parts of Terlingua Ranch can be challenging, reaching the camp is usually straightforward. We've driven in with a 3500 dually with a 20’ gooseneck horse trailer, and we’ve never encountered any issues. It’s easily accessible yet remote enough to showcase its pristine natural beauty. The surroundings are incredibly tranquil and serene. At night, under Nesting Star Camp's skies, the stars unveil a majestic tapestry that will leave you in awe. The night also awakens with the coyote calls, the gentle desert winds, and the possible flutter of a bat or owl hoot. We also have wild donkeys that roam the area, and you might hear them braying. Please avoid approaching them, though. We provide a composting toilet for your use. Please note that when we are not present to manage waste (#2), you will be responsible for removing the toilet liner bag and disposing of your waste in the provided trash cans. There is also a shower room, and we will supply solar shower bags for your use. If you’re not familiar with them, please research solar showers before booking. Essentially, they are bags you will be responsible for filling with water and placing in the sun to heat up. On a sunny day, you can achieve a temperature of around 115 degrees, although on cloudy days, it won’t heat beyond the ambient temperature. The camp features two uncovered decks for stargazing and one deck with a roof that is partially open on the sides, providing more shelter from the elements. Please be aware that this is an off-grid camp, meaning there is no running water or power on-site. You are required to bring your own water. Additionally, we request that you limit generator use to basic needs only and keep it off between 7 PM and 8 AM. Cell phone coverage on the property can be inconsistent, but on most days, you can expect to get 2-3 bars of 3G signal on Verizon and Google Fi. We personally use a cell phone booster and recommend one if you don't have one, on most days it can provide a 4-bar 3G service. Sometimes, you may need to find an elevated spot to obtain a strong signal. However, it’s important to note that reception can be unreliable, and we recommend you plan ahead. Starlink works very well here.

Absolutely loved this site! It was a short hike from the parking area and we were able to pack out our bougie, week long camp in 3-4 trips with a couple of wagons that we brought. It would have been an easy walk for a backpacking style camping experience, but we wanted all the things for this trip. Ms. Karen is an amazingly generous hostess and her dog, Mojo, is a fantastic co-host! We loved his visits! The site is beautiful and very private. You feel like the only people on earth while stargazing out here. The view of the Milky Way was incredible. Having a real shower so close to camp was amazing after hiking in Big Bend all day. Highly recommend this camp to anyone.

My family and I had an amazing time. The night sky was filled with incredible stars. Coyotes would visit our campsite at night while we were sleeping, so it’s important to keep your food stored away. Deer would visit in the mornings too. If you’re seeking privacy, this is the place to be.

Beautiful secluded spot. Responsive and helpful hosts if needed. Long bumpy dirt road on the last couple miles. Truck/suv tires are fine, but would be rough on car tires. If visiting Big Bend keep in mind it’s about 1-1.5hrs to the park entrance from there. So plan ahead. Would come back for how quiet it is and the views.

We enjoyed our stay. Facilities were clean, restaurant was great, and we loved the pool! We would return.

Views of the Chisos mountains from the tent will not disappoint.

Weekend Trip to Mel's Place

I have stayed at Mel’s about 3 or 4 times. I love the location, the property is clean and quiet! I have always taken my tent but this time tried out one of Mel’s sites with a tent and bed setup. I literally slept like a baby!!! So comfortable. A new addition is the shower. It was great after a day of hiking at the parks.

Weekend Trip to Terlingua Ranch Primitive Camp

This was mine and my wife’s first real camping trip where we would truck tent and we were nervous to say the least. The camping ground was a perfect introduction for us with the perfect amount of seclusion and privacy while still having the convenience of clean restrooms and showers after all day hiking at Big Bend! A special thanks to the staff for laughing off the fact we didn’t know where our spot was the first night coming in late and ended up in an area we weren’t supposed to be. We can’t wait to come back to Big Bend and will be staying here again!

We loved it out there, it was so peaceful and the sky was magnificent. We loved the seclusion and being in a primitive campground with a beautiful sun rise and sunset with mountains surrounding the area. About 20-30 miles from chisos mountain in big bend the drive is scenic

3 nights at Goat Pens, Cigar Springs Ranch

The Goat Pens is amazing. Favorite place to go in West Texas. We go here just to spend time there. Honestly don’t feel the need to go into the Parks. This place is close enough to the Ghost Town, but feels secluded. Amenities are awesome. Can’t wait to go back.

Another outstanding stay!! Maru the camp host made sure to come by and check on us often. 😊 Jennifer and Ashley at the store were awesome. We met a few of the locals and hope to be a part of it all in years to come.
