Camping on Lake Texoma

Believe the hype—this "Playground of the Southwest" is not only the “Striper Capital of the World” but one of the largest and most popular lakes in the US, drawing some 6 million visitors each year. Sprawling across the state lines of Texas and Oklahoma, and just a 1.5-hour drive from Dallas, Lake Texoma serves up hundreds of miles of lakeside fun. Bring your boat, kayak, or waterskis to get on the water, tee off at a waterfront golf course, or picnic by the lake. Paradise on Lake Texoma (formerly Paradise Cove) is a beautiful, secluded commercial campground located in the "Big Mineral Arm'' of Lake Texoma. Built in the 80's by the Corps of Engineers, Paradise has been a mainstay of the lake for many years. Recently, the current management team are working to grow Paradise into something special. With a huge focus on community and culture, Paradise has tons of space for people to come together and enjoy the company and also areas to wander off and find a quiet lakeside spot to relax. You'll also be able to catch one of the best breathtaking sunsets on the lake! The wildlife we have on the property is amazing! I have deer that sleep in my front yard, opossums, 600 bird species, and my favorite… the armadillos! We offer Kayaking on the property for a fee. We have a beautiful Hammock Garden free for guests to kick back and relax. Texoma Water Taxi is a text away to give guests a ride anywhere on the lake including restaurants. Rock-N A Ranch is roughly 20 minutes away and offers horseback riding. The Cabins and Campsites are within walking distance from each other but far enough away to create that illusion of privacy. We do have a neighborhood close by but you can’t see or hear them due to the woods.  In my travels, I try to bring back something I’ve seen or learned to help improve the guest experience and environment. You’ll notice little touches of Asia, Mexico, and even Hill Country Texas! We pride ourselves on our excellent customer service and treat every guest like family. We’re always a text away! You’ll see us out and about on our golf carts. If you ever need anything just holler (: Check-in time is at 3 pm. Our staff works really hard to make sure everything is perfect for your stay and we can’t guarantee it will be if you arrive before then. Parking, we work really hard to keep our property beautiful. Be sure to park in parking areas only.

My location is about 8 miles due west of the little town of Caney, Oklahoma. I’m very rural, no close neighbors, 19 acres of pasture and woods. Plenty of places to park, one area is back in the woods a bit with water and 50 amp service, others strictly boondocking. There’s not much “close” to me but I’m kind of centrally located between Atoka, Texoma and McGee lakes. Boggy depot state park and Fort Washita is close by and south of me is the Choctaw Casino. It’s very quiet and no nighttime lights so there’s an awesome night sky. Please check out the map I've included in my photos for precise directions. The last 2.5 miles to get to my house is by gravel road and my entrance may be a bit difficult to spot but my name and address is on the big black mailbox. Just turn in and cross the cattle guard and go through the driveway into the open field. Parking is on the north side of the drive along the tree line or back in the woods. Don’t hesitate to contact me directly for directions. If you follow my guidance, you should have no problem finding me or turning into my drive. Pets are welcome but I suggest they remain on a leash if you’re around my house or other campers and please clean up after them. The open field around my house is not always mowed because my neighbor cuts the hay and I like the spring wildflowers. I try to keep a walking path around my place but I travel too so at times it may not be well maintained. Since I do travel a lot, I may not be home when you arrive. Please make yourself at home and leave the place as you found it. Thank you!

In the early 1900’s an iconic red barn was built near the hilltop along the road between the old Mt. Zion community and Collinsville. Later in the 1900’s, the land was mostly abandoned by its owners, but not by the local fishermen! They knew its woodland fishing pond never dried up, and so was able to support a better population of fish. They also dumped a cornucopia of old motorcycles, cars and farm equipment in the front field. What else were you supposed to do with scrap metal in North Texas horse country? In 2002 the Holtzman family purchased the 35 acre tract of land. They dug a front pond for swimming and paddling, buried the scrap metal (although occasional bits of history still work their way up!), restored and brought horses back to the barn, and began consulting with local biologists about supporting native wildlife. April Holtzman launched Camp Tonkawa Outdoor Learning Center on the property to provide a beautiful, safe place for families to explore and learn about nature. Camp Tonkawa continues to host overnight and day camps with educational programing organized around various themes including: Native American culture, nature awareness, basic camping skills, primitive survival, organic gardening, herbology, outdoor cooking, western days, and horsemanship. We also host field trips and frequently conduct Girl Scout journeys for all levels in the "It's Your Planet, Love it!" series. Due to Covid-19, which limited working with groups for our educational programing, we joined Hip Camp where families who could isolate in nature together on our property.

Camping on Lake Texoma guide

Where to go

South Shore, Texas

The wooded southern shores of Lake Texoma are laced together with scenic hiking and biking trails, and peppered with golf courses, marinas, and beaches. Toward the eastern end of the lake, Eisenhower State Park also has a sandy swimming beach, OHV trails, and RV and tent sites.

North Shore, Oklahoma

Lake Texoma State Park is among the main highlights of the Oklahoman shore, where you can swim, camp, hike, and try varied water sports. Plenty of lakefront RV campsites with electric hookups sit at Caney Creek Recreation Area, while the lakeside resorts of Buncombe Creek and Alberta Creek both have full-service marinas and RV parks with full hookups. Or why not cruise out to explore the six Lake Texoma Islands, famous for their holiday weekend party scene?

West Shore

Lake Texoma’s western side is its wild side, with state-managed wildlife and hunting areas running along the lake and the banks of the Red River. RV parks and resorts cluster around Juniper Point, and day-use areas can be found along both the Oklahoman and Texan sides. Just to the north, Lake Murray State Park is Oklahoma’s oldest state park and renowned for its woodland hikes, ATV trails, and historic CCC cabins.

East Shore, Oklahoma

Tranquil campgrounds are scattered along the east shore of Lake Texoma, and there are spacious RV campsites, some with full hookups, at East Burns Run and West Burns Run. You can bring your horse to Patter Flats campground, the starting point for the Patter Flats Equestrian Trail, which loops around the lake. Further north, the lake tapers out into lush waterways, and the Tishomingo National Wildlife Refuge is a bird-watching hotspot at the mouth of the Washita River.
