Absolutely a gorgeous property and the hosts were amazing. They’ve got a good selection of simple campsites and a primitive area. We’ll be coming back for sure!

We loved camping the primitive site by the river. The trail to get there was short and clear, the views were beautiful. Getting in to the river was easy and they have a ladder you can enter. There were conveniently chairs and fire pits and charcoal grills available. We enjoyed exploring the river but couldn’t float as the river was extremely low and shallow. Water was hot due to it being summer but it was still fun! Host was very polite and helpful!!

I loved the great scenery of the farm, getting and getting welcomed by the chickens and rosters. It was awesome to have a spot to shower as well. Buying fresh eggs from their farm was also a nice bonus before we left the farm. The lake was so peaceful and the water was at a great temperature to jump into or fish at.

Awesome company and site. Our two kids, seven and two, along with my wife and I, really enjoyed the Happy Horse Hotel. We will definitely be back!

A beautiful private property on the Colorado River, with everything we needed. There is no sewer hook up, but otherwise, it was an easy set up. It is a true hill country feel, with rolling pastures and sounds of nature. We loved it.

What an incredible place! We definitely made some core memories here with our boys. The hosts went above and beyond to make sure we had a comfortable stay and the check in process was a breeze. There are showers and a portopotty, which was impeccably clean. We loved seeing all of the animals and even picked up some fresh eggs for breakfast! The river site was something out of a book. It was cool in the shade with a nice breeze from the river. Our son went fishing and caught a beautiful bass along with several other fish! We will most definitely be back! Thank you both so much for an amazing camping experience!

I had a really great time camping here. Traveled down from Kansas City in my camper van, and was welcomed by both Beaux and Hollis, who were incredibly nice, and accommodating people. They made sure to give me a tour of the campsite, and gave me a list of items to discover in a scavenger hunt through their very well-cared for forest walk, which was full of wildlife and beautiful scenery. As a musician coming through for some rest, and inspiration.. I found The Happy Horse to fit my needs perfectly. This place is truly a gem. I do not even know where to start... Amazing! Peaceful! Perfect! The grounds are beautiful and the hosts are tentative, knowledgeable, and great conversationalist! Chairs, lights, firewood, picnic table, fire ring. Hollis came by right before sunset and turned on all my christmas lights for me. She let me know there would be a late check in as well, as not to spook me when they arrived since I was alone. Bathrooms were all well kept and the shower... the shower. I could write a review on just the shower alone. Highly recommended this little gem of a place.

We had such a great time at the McDonald Farm!! The location was beautiful and there’s river access within walking distance. The hosts were extremely kind and welcoming to all of us. Additionally, the other campers were very nice as well. The showers were awesome and felt very clean. They provided delicious coffee that we had every morning and fire wood for our fire pit for no extra cost!! Very generous and sweet hosts. We’d absolutely visit again!

Weekend Trip to Stunning Dome Retreat w/Hot Tub

This was our first time using HipCamp, and what an incredible experience! Zvi and Thunder (the resident longhorn on site) were extremely responsive hosts and made sure we had everything that we needed for the duration of our stay. The geodesic dome was beautifully decorated with a sophisticated touch, impeccably clean, and incredibly comfortable. The location was private and peaceful—a perfect getaway from the city. We loved how secluded it felt despite being a short 20 minute drive from Bastrop. One of our favorite parts was waking up to a beautiful sunrise, with the option to open the curtains and let the morning light pour in. At night, the views of the sky were absolutely stunning—perfect for stargazing and soaking in the beauty of the quiet countryside. We couldn’t have asked for a better stay and would highly recommend this spot to anyone looking to unwind and recharge.

We had the best time at McDonald’s Farm! From splashing in the river to hanging out fireside this is the spot! Our kids loved seeing the pigs, chickens, and horse, as well as exploring the property. Simple campsites, owners are super nice. The property is kept and feels very safe. The bathroom and outdoor shower are what you would expect for a campground, but many of the doors don’t quite shut all the way. Overall great spot to camp!

We are now offering daytime river access to the San Gabriel River! This is a secluded, hike to spot for fishing, swimming, grilling, picnicing, and hanging out during the day. Access to our river site is included in your camping fee, or we offer day passes for non-campers! There is no overnight camping on the San Gabriel River. All camping is at the main farm area and campers are able to come and go from the river site as they please. McDonald Farm sits in the historic farming community of Jonah, TX between Georgetown and Taylor on scenic Highway 29. McDonald Farm is named after the patriarch of the family, J.H. Mcdonald, who first acquired the property in 1911. The farm sits on the bank of the San Gabriel River and features a lush canopy of huge pecan trees, sprawling corn fields, prairie, and forest. We are a working farm! We primarily grow corn, but we also have livestock on the property. During daytime hours, you will likely see a variety of farm chores being completed. We are only 7 miles from the Georgetown, TX historical district and square. Some say it’s the most beautiful town square in all of Texas. Enjoy shopping, dining, and festivals! We are 13 miles from Granger Lake, which offers boating and bass fishing opportunities. Highway 29 and the many quaint and scenic country roads that intersect it is popular with cyclists wanting to go for longer rides and enjoy the sights of central Texas and the many historical farms in the area. There is excellent bird-watching and wildlife-viewing opportunities on the property. We frequently see white-tailed deer, as well as other wildlife and many species of birds. There is road noise. Highway 29 can be busy at times, despite being a two-lane road. We also have neighbors, so we request quiet hours after 10 pm Sunday - Thursday and midnight Friday and Saturday. Firefly Ranch

The property borders a small creek and has abundant trees, and wildlife. Beautiful views from every vantage with a high field on one half of the property and a low bottom land near the creek where there are many options for a relaxing, private stay. Chose big sky or a more secluded spot. Incredible wildflowers on display in the spring. The property is not bordered by close neighbors or dense housing, just more land so sunsets and rises are wonderful and open. Low ambient light pollution at night means the stars are very bright (and so are the fireflies)! Guests are required to communicate estimated time of arrival well in advance. When arriving, make sure to meet Aaron or a designate at the red gate before entering further into the property. If tent camping, please do not bring glass containers, also you must pack out all garbage and waste. Inquire ahead of time to see if firewood is available to be gathered on site, or if you will need to bring your own. No uninvited guests without 24 hour prior approval, and additional guest fees paid. Also please no more than one dog per site.

Starlove Ranch & Animal Sanctuary

Our 100 acre heritage property has been in the family for over 150 years. Since 2017, we've been operating our land as a Vegan, Regenerative-Agriculture Farm & Animal Sanctuary. We currently have 2 dogs, 3 cats plus a herd of 31 Cows, 4 Potbelly Pigs and 2 Spanish Goats. The cows and pigs are all rescue animals so, where as they are adapted to humans being around them, they are very shy and petting them is not allowed. The dogs, cats and goats, on the other hand, are very friendly and love to be pet and fed treats. We are located outside of Dime Box, TX and are a 30 minute drive from the quaint, artist village of Round Top, and 12 miles from Lake Somerville SP. Our property has equal parts rolling pastures and wooded thickets and ravines. There are plenty of nooks and crannies to explore and gorgeous views of the Texas horizons....time your stay just right and you can stand directly between the sunset and the moonrise! We also have a hike-and-bike, nature trail that offers a 360 loop around the property. We have a new construction Bath House on site for restroom needs w/ hot showers and composting potties plus a cold-water sink w/ non-potable water suited for washing produce, hands, dishes or camping gear.
