The Spruill Farm belonged to the Spruill Family for over a hundred years and has been set up as conservation easement protected land in '23. It includes hardwood forest, swamp, a beautiful swimming beach* on the Albemarle Sound - one of the largest freshwater sounds in the world-, acres of farmland, vegetable garden and perhaps the largest fig orchard for hundreds of miles around. The purpose of the Spruill Farm is to further environmental research, promote ecological education and sustainable practices, and provide access for the public to the ever-diminishing shoreline experience. Please enjoy the incredible sunsets and woodland views, while respecting the serenity of this unique gem on the inner-banks.
Wildlife on the property include Red Fox, River Otter, and 95 species of birds, including Bald Eagles (2 nests on the farm), nesting Osprey, Wood Ducks. Visit the 'Spruill Farm Conservation Project' on inaturalist(dot)org to see all 95 species, and upload any images from your observations.
Because it is a nature preserve, please read the guidelines and rules closely if you choose to book with us.
*Note: the shoreline changes with the wave action and the seasons. The beach is bigger in winter, smaller in summer. These changes make the Bobby Wilkins shoreline trail so beautiful- always changing.

In the town of Wakefield you’ll find gas stations, dollar stores, a Value food market and if you want (to go) food we have that also. Plus it’s home to The Virginia Diner. Amenities include toilet access, a shower, trash disposal, picnic tables, and potable water. Pets are allowed, as are campfires.

Sea 🐴 is now one of our favorite HipCamps 🥰. Claudine is an excellent host with incredible communications with guests. She forewarned us of a local boil water advisory as well as a follow up when it was lifted. She even went as far as letting us know of a super late arrival (after midnight) at her adjacent lot. The lot its self is a level tightly mowed grass lot right on a boat canal with views of the bay. All hookups are conveniently placed (multiple 30 & 50 amp as well as multiple water and sewer…making your parking configuration a no brainer). I wish I had taken more pictures, but we were too busy enjoying our stay 🥰.

We loved John's Hipcamp site! This is a beautiful and quiet setting. However, it was still very near stores, restaurants, etc. They have chairs set up on a sandy beach right at the river's edge. This spot is a gem for so many reasons. First of all, the view, wow! Pictures barely do it justice. We were looking up places to explore nearby & even though we did visit other places, we realized we couldn’t beat the private beach & incredible water front we had right in front of our camper.
We really appreciated the very kind & generous hosts and their super sweet dog, Ali (sp?) for opening their property for others to enjoy. They even offer their kayaks and an awesome shower with hot & cold water (seriously, it’s a really cool shower. Private, spacious, nice warm shower while listening to birds & feeling a refreshing outdoor breeze)
John & Courtney were available for questions or help but also gave us privacy. We were happy we got to chat with them a bit because they are a such a nice couple.

My favorite Hipcamp yet! The site is quiet, spacious, and private, yet close to lots of delicious bars/restaurants and a quick drive to OBX beaches. Barry’s, a local waterfront bar, is only about a 2 minute walk from the site.
Claudine and her husband, Jonathan were incredible hosts. Jonathan met us at the spot for check in, and was full of great recommendations for activities and food. He even took us out on his boat for a day! Claudine was very responsive to any questions.
We didn’t want to leave. Highly recommend!

Favorite Hipcamp yet! Quaint, peaceful, yet close to some great bars/restaurants and a quick drive to OBX beaches. Barry’s, a cool little local bar right on the water, is only about a 2 min walk. The spot itself is spacious, private, and has everything you need- water, 50amp power, and sewer. Not to mention there’s water views everywhere you look.
Claudine and her husband, Jonathan, were incredible hosts. They went above and beyond to make our stay so much fun. Great recommendations about the local area and Jonathan even took us out on his boat!
