i absolutely loved staying here! the bed was so comfy, the towels were lovely, the coffee was amazing, the yurt was spacious & the heater was very nice. i loved all the personal touches like the gratitude journal & the games and activities for guests to do- i wish i had more time here! my only complaint would be that the outdoor shower water was FREEZING- would love to have a warm shower. might be OK / better in the warmer months

Literally the most earth-friendly place I’ve ever stayed! I’m an experienced camper and boondocker who has owned multiple RVs, so I know my nature vibes—and this spot truly blew me away. It offered the perfect balance of comfort and connection to the outdoors. The dome felt like a romantic getaway surrounded by nature, yet had all the amenities you could ask for: a private shower, a grill with a burner, pots and pans, electricity, and even great cell reception. It was peaceful, rejuvenating, and thoughtfully designed with sustainability in mind. I’ll definitely be coming back—and honestly, I could see myself staying here for an entire month if possible.

We stayed at Starlighthill Campground in the Lunaview Dome to celebrate my husband’s birthday, and it was absolutely perfect! Everything about our stay exceeded our expectations. The dome was cozy and comfortable, and we especially loved the 1-hour spa session—it was so relaxing and a wonderful treat. At night, the star views were simply incredible, a truly unforgettable experience. The entire property is very well maintained—the dome, the grounds, with clean restrooms. The staff response fast to your messages/ needs.The attention to detail really shows. I would highly recommend this place to anyone looking for a peaceful and unique getaway. We are already planning to come back!

Our first time camping and it was such a wonderful experience. The dome is such a family friendly site. Two projectors, fans throughout the tent, bean bags, and games were a beautiful touch. Incredible view to wake up to and BBQ to. Loved how it was safely enclosed throughout. Campsite had everything we needed. Hot shower water, purified drinking water, doggie water fountain, and the dish washing area was a nice set up. Staff was friendly and aware of any needs. Would 10/10 recommend and hope to be back in winter.

What a great site! It was our 8 year old daughter’s first time camping and it didn’t disappoint. The dome was amazing, even in the heat. 3 solar fans kept us cool at night. Accessible bathrooms, drinking water and showers. We have told many of our family and friends and will be sure to come back.

We loved the Dome experience! It was located in a beautiful spot, easy to find, and a great place to get away. I enjoyed being so close to nature and the moon projection was my favorite! Bed was comfy, board games were fun, and the deck was a perfect place to lounge and read a book. Overall I would highly recommend this spot!

Where to go

Lake Norman State Park

Find electricity-equipped cabins, RV parks with full-hookups, and tent campsites with firepits and hot showers at Lake Norman State Park. The 1.5-hour drive east brings campers to fun boating and fishing opportunities along a 375-foot long sandy beach. Rent a jet ski to cruise around, a speedboat to waterski, or a pontoon boat to leisurely experience the outdoor splendors of Lake Norman. Many companies also offer guided fishing tours as well as wakeboard, kayak, and canoe rentals. For campers looking for land activities, wander along Lake Norman Lakeshore Trail or hit the 30 miles of single-track mountain biking trails.

Whitewater Falls

Cascading 411 feet down, Whitewater Falls is dubbed the highest waterfall east of the Rocky Mountains. It’s open year-round from dawn until dusk and is roughly a 2-hour drive east from Shelby. While there isn’t any camping right at the falls, there are picnic tables and restrooms, making it a scenic stop for snacks or lunch. Then stay and savor the stunning views of the falls from two overlook areas—one of which is wheelchair-accessible. Peak hours are in the middle of the day, making morning or evening quieter times to visit.

Stone Mountain State Park

A 2-hour drive north from Shelby, Stone Mountain State Park delivers unparalleled hiking, horseback riding, fishing, rock climbing, and a variety of camping options year-round. Find tent campsites with fire rings, or hike Widow’s Creek Trail to four primitive backcountry campsites. For more amenities, try an RV park nearby that features electrical and water hookups as well as communal dump stations. Then check out the restored Hutchinson Homestead farm and the 600-foot granite dome that looms in the background.

When to go

North Carolina experiences four distinct seasons. June, July, and August are peak summer months, with temperatures reaching a high of 89°F, accompanied by plenty of rain. January and February are the coldest months, with temperatures dropping slightly below freezing. The busiest times to visit Shelby are in spring and autumn, when warm weather with less humidity makes outdoor activities like hiking and biking most comfortable.
