3 nights at At the Ridge Camp-Riverside Escapes

What a sweet relaxing spot! Right outside our RV was a beautiful stream - I believe an offshoot of the French Broad River? Our pup went swimming several times a day as we sat on perfect large rocks sipping wine and throwing him sticks into the water! Plenty of shade with all the beautiful trees. We’ll be back in the fall to see the changing colors. There are several short term campers here that are super nice and helpful! The people are great and the camping was even better! Thank you to Tom - what a beautiful place you have! And thank you to Travis and Carol for being wonderful neighbors!

We love Smoky Mountain Mangalista! It's beautiful, relaxing, and just what we wanted. The views and experience are amazing, it's in a great location to access all the things we wanted to do, and Catherine and Rick are great! We want to recommend it to everyone...but then again, we want to keep it our little secret so no one finds out! This makes two years in a row for us, and we hope to return again.

Wow. Just wow. This is definitely a unique spot and the hosts just get it what a good camping experience looks like. The property is clearly loved and cared for. The views and nature are breathtaking, water in the river is clean, the nights are starry, and above all nobody is bothering anyone. We were hesitant to write this review because we loved the place so much and didn't want it to become crowded. However the hosts deserve the recognition for their efforts — this place is a hidden gem. People, please help preserving it.

We had an absolutely wonderful stay at this beautiful campsite hosted by Ray and Shannon. From the moment we arrived, we felt a deep connection to nature. The site is surrounded by lovely animals—cows, donkeys, chickens, ducks, and more—making it a perfect retreat for animal lovers and nature enthusiasts alike. Ray went above and beyond to make our stay enjoyable. He was incredibly welcoming and always available to help with anything we needed, even providing us with some cobalt when we asked. His hospitality truly made a difference, and we felt well taken care of throughout our stay. The campsite itself is well-maintained, with showers and bathrooms conveniently located near our site, which was a huge plus! We were also treated to a stunning sunset each evening, adding to the beauty of this tranquil place. Overall, this camping experience was everything we hoped for and more. 5 nights at Smoky Mtn Mangalitsa River Ranch

Catherine and Rick’s Mangalitsa farm is a beautiful place to stay with friends or family. We stayed on Rapids 3 which was absolutely beautiful on the river. Their directions to find the site were thorough and informative. Seeing the donkeys and piggies on the farm was great too! I picked up some fresh bratwurst, eggs and lard from the farm too to take home. They were so kind and made the stay a breeze. Sadly their farm was damaged in Helene but they have done a great job of restoring the land!

Lovely, safe, secluded. Wish we'd been doing more than a one night stay on our way through. Clearly a great spot in a charming area. Falling asleep to the creek sound is hard to beat. Communication and access was all smooth. Thanks!

2 nights at Black Bear Resort

So, the BB Resort is definitely out of the way and I think borders Cherokee Forest land. I was on the property for two nights, the upper tenting area. Unfortunately for me, rain seems to follow me. That upper area can get a little soupy with a lot of rain but it was also really peaceful - I had it all to myself. There is a little creek / stream running along one side. Not sure which # site I had but it was the next to last on the left. Good ground cover. Moss, which helped in keeping my tent mostly dry at the bottom. Good tree coverage above but when it rains so hard... The further into the upper field you go, the weaker the wifi signal gets if you need it. However, the deck area in the back of the restaurant, which unfortunately I didn't partake in, was nice and also a large covered porch. The lower camp has some hammock sites and all kinds of little cabin bldgs, not to mention beach tent sites. A bit of everything. I wouldn't try driving anything too big from Hampton to the site - road is kind of narrow and swith-backy in spots, but I'm a wuss. Good experience except for my self-inflicted mountain rain-storms.

Beautiful place! Stayed at site 2 with an 11 and 14 year old. The kids loved the creek. This campground is pretty awesome! The lady in charge, Charles, and the chef were incredibly helpful! Camp was very close to hiking trails and there is a very laid-back atmosphere. I would recommend this place!

Wonderful time visiting the campsite! Great accommodations, flexible check in hours, and wonderful hosts. If looking for a spot along the Appalachian trail or just a getaway, highly recommend! The road to the site is narrow and winding, so proceed with caution.

We rented 3 sites for a family camping trip. They were all great, as described. When it rained there was an old barn we could cover and eat in. Bathrooms were very clean, hot water. Nice hike around the property. They kept the firewood really dry to use too.

Camped here with our tent and it was great! The Buckeye Bank is right on the creek, has a ton of space, and is nicely spaced from the other camping spots. Will definitely be camping here again.

Great host, we arrived a hour late due to weather, but we got set up and the place is amazing, the serenity of the creek was great to wake up every morning and to sit by the fire at night. The Host who greeted us was friendly and helpful with showing us a few falls and trails around the area, we plan on coming back in the fall and making it a regular.

Stayed in the TeePee and man oh man did my kids love it. Falling asleep next to the relaxing sounds of the creek. 2nd year in a row and we will be back for many more.

2 nights at Smoky Mtn Mangalitsa River Ranch

My wife and I needed a couple days away from work and life so we looked on Hipcamp to find a nice place to camp and thankfully stumbled upon the Smoky Mtn Mangalitsa River Ranch. Christina and Rick's majestic property was better than either of us could have imagined, from experiencing the sublime overlooking the mountains from the ranch's peak to swimming in both the lazy and the white-water parts of their river only a dozen steps from our tent on Site 3 (The Rapids). We set up a hammock under the trees, we had a fire that burned perfectly due to the refreshing breeze over the property fueling it. When I tell you that this ranch is like going into the children's book The Wind in the Willows, I am not kidding. It's super relaxing, especially watching the breeze blow past the fescue (looks like wheat) from my chair at the camp as the sun peaks through the big established walnut tree leaves, listening to the birds chirping and rushing water, seeing Stetson wander the landscape as the goats, donkeys, horses, and pigs graze. Christina and Rick were wonderfully hospitable and welcoming, and the Donkey Tour of the ranch is a must so you can get to know the property and the owners. It informs you of their talented work, but also their history and plans for the future. Their property is only a 15 minute drive from Waynesville, so we explored Main Street, since we'd never been before, and it was fun as well. We will certainly be coming back next time we need a weekend vacation!

2 nights at Smoky Mtn Mangalitsa River Ranch

Absolutely loved this spot. The campsite was well maintained, with an awesome deck and a floor hammock that made it easy to relax and soak in the surroundings. Falling asleep to the sound of the river was pure magic. The views from the meadows and the nearby knoll were incredible. Sunsets and moonrises up there are not to be missed. Perfect blend of comfort and nature.

All sites creek! The French Broad River is a stone's throw away for kayaking! We are in the heart of the beautiful Smoky Mountains, so outdoor recreation abounds! Paint Ceek Recreational Area, Wolf Creek Falls Trailhead, and the Meadow Creek Fire Tower are nearby! The entrance to the Great Smoky Mountain National Park, located in Cosby, TN., is min away. The town of Newport is 15 min away for all of your necessities. We are 20 min from Hot Springs, NC and Hartford, TN. Hartford is world-renowned for whitewater rafting! Hot Springs, NC is located on the Appalachian Trail. We are 1 hr from Gatlinburg, Pigeon Forge, Sevierville, Knoxville, and Asheville! Long Creek Haven is located 2 hrs from Cade's Cove. There are many UTV trails all around us, so bring your UTV's! We are pet-friendly, however, pets must be well-behaved on a leash at all times. We have 3 small dogs, 4 cats, and 1 chicken on the property. We have a circular gravel drive with easy access off of Hwy 340, so we can accommodate big rigs as well as vans and buses! We welcome all types of rv's, skoolies, vans, converted rigs, etc.! Guests are welcome to stay up to 2 weeks. If you need or want to stay longer, just ask! Boondocking is $35 per night. Electric, sewage, and water are available if needed. Electric is 15, 30, or 50 amp. Full hookup sites are available for an additional $20 fee per night, therefore $55 per night. Discounts are given for a weekly rate. All full hookup sites are located on the creek! We have more boondocking sites available than are listed, so, if the site you want is booked or if you need another site due to traveling with friends or family, please call us and ask! We also have a dump station! The dump station cost is $10 for boondocking guests. We have a bathroom and laundry facilities located in the cabin. Laundry is $3 per load to wash and drutdoor shower is located next to the barn. Our property is peaceful and serene, so we appreciate the non-use of generators. The closest town is Hot Springs, which is 20 minutes away and the Hot Springs are a definite must-see if that peaks your interest! The town itself is also pretty cool. There are some good shops, restaurants & our favorite hardware store!! Downtown Marshall is also close, about 25 minutes and has a lot to offer! Gr8 restaurants, thrifting and cute shops along the river. Our property is about an hour away from the Blue Ridge Parkway, and the adorable city of Asheville - which makes for a fantastic day trip with delicious restaurants, breweries, cool shops, and more! The Great Smokey Mountains and Deep Creek are about 1.5 hours away from the campsite. The Appalachian Trail is closeby and there are countless opportunities for stunning hikes. There's also kayaking, tubing, white water rafting opportunities as well as zip lining and horseback riding. There is something for everyone to enjoy and we can't wait to share it with you!

Other features also remain that can be used: a sliding rock waterfall which is a short hike within the campground property, moderate trails for hiking, and mountain biking running from the waterfall through the back of the property (these trails are mountainous, so please enter at your own risk), fruit trees, blueberry bushes, small trout pond, a playground, an open meadow for star gazing, and our friendly neighborhood duck, Howard. (He hangs by the pond and accepts treats!) You are welcome to explore all these features, but please be mindful and respectful of residents and guests, do not enter or explore the greenhouses or gardens, and remain aware that this is mountainous terrain with inherent risks.This is a rustic property in the forest, centrally located to all the area has to offer. Overview

The only known natural hot spring in North Carolina gave rise to the city of Hot Springs, which has become a resort town rife with privately owned spas, lodging rentals, and lots of camping and outdoor recreation. Hot Springs sits near the Appalachian Trail, a popular destination for long-distance hikers, and the French Broad River, believed to be one of the oldest rivers in the world. Head deeper into nature with a trip to Pisgah National Forest for mile-high peaks and dispersed camping. Lake James State Park offers lakeside campgrounds for water enthusiasts. And Mount Mitchell State Park offers backpacking campsites next to the highest point of elevation east of the Mississippi River.

Pisgah National Forest

With over 500,000 acres of forested slopes, waterfalls, and mile-high peaks, Pisgah National Forest is a camper’s delight. Head out on multi-use trails for biking and horseback riding to rock climbing opportunities. Or go tubing, fishing, or swimming in the streams and rivers flowing through the forest park. On-site RV and tent campsites provide access to potable water and dump stations, while dispersed, primitive camping options in the wilderness are also available. For a bit of luxury, reserve a private furnished cabin or tiny house under the trees.

Lake James State Park

A popular destination on the Catawba River system, Lake James State Park welcomes campers to paddle-in and backpack-in primitive campsites for an immersive lake experience. Wake up and go boating, swimming, jet skiing and fishing. Then hike on pet-friendly trails like Holly Discovery Trail or Overmountain Victory Trail to see more of the park. For those looking for more traditional options, lakeside campsites for tents and RVs are also available with potable waters and hot showers.

Mount Mitchell State Park

Mount Mitchell State Park has two claims to fame—it was the very first state park in North Carolina and the mountain for which it’s named happens to be the highest point of elevation east of the Mississippi River. Campers can access the park in May through November via the Blue Ridge Mountains Parkway, or hike the Mountains-to-Sea state trails connected to Pisgah National Forest. Other peaks in the park like Mount Hallback, Mount Craig, Big Tom, and Balsam Cone have 360-degree panoramic views and are lined with Fraser fir forests. All campsites are walk-in backpacking sites with grills and picnic tables, but private campgrounds for RVs with full hookups are also nearby.

Hot Springs is in a mountain valley, which brings cooler temperatures in summer and offers protection from winter storms, resulting in a comfortable temperate climate year-round. Daily high temperatures are around 85°F in summer months, while winters stay between 33°F and 53°F. Since Hot Springs sits near the Appalachian Trail and Blue Ridge Mountains, summer is a very popular time for campers who want to hike on the trails and enjoy the mountain wilderness.
