The best camping near Rochester with campfires

·

Tourists often overlook this historic small city located on Lake Ontario. But locals know that Rochester is prime terrain for exploring western New York. niagara falls is 1 1/2 hours away and the Finger Lakes just an hour. The city itself is a hub for festivals, making summer the prime season to visit.

Lake Ontario offers nearly 200 miles of fresh water to swim, fish, and kayak. About 30 miles from Rochester, Hamlin Beach State Park is a favorite for lakeside camping. The family-friendly camp has tent and trailer sites with electrical hookups. Sandy beaches with lifeguards and a boat launch offer easy water access, plus beach trails for walking and biking.

For wilder terrain, make a day trip to the Braddock Bay Wildlife Management Area. Nature trails crisscross these marshes--a flyway stop for harriers, kingfishers, and herons, among other species. It's a beautiful spot for kayaking, and several boat launches make getting in the water easy. There's also a fishing pier on Salmon Creek to cast your line.

The Finger Lakes are worthy of destination camping all by themselves. In addition to scenic waterfall trails and boating, the region has first-rate golf courses and many wineries.

Sampson State Park is an excellent home base for exploring. Located on Seneca Lake, the large campground has cabins and several loops of campsites. A snack bar on the beach and a marina give the park a busy feel. There's also a military museum with retired fighter jets parked outside on the grass.

If you want to stay closer to Rochester, private campgrounds are your best bet. You can find cottages right out of a summer camp and RV parks with creature comforts like full hookups and Wi-Fi. The closest public campgrounds are in Webster Park in the nearby town of Webster. This small camp is set amid miles of nature trails and a short walk from the fishing pier on Lake Ontario.

There are several campsites as well as a cozy bed in a cabin that you can stay in. The property used to be an orchard, until most was sold and converted to housing developments. My one acre and a few old cherry trees remains. Both the camping areas and the cabin are in sight of my house. But, there are plenty of areas to choose from. I can supply a fire ring and logs to burn if you are interested. Dogs allowed, as long as they get along with and don’t chase other animals. You must be animal friendly! I have a dog, two indoor/outdoor cats, and chickens.

This area, steeped in history and natural charm, provides an ideal backdrop for campers seeking tranquility and adventure. Hamlin, established in 1852 and renamed in honor of Vice President Hannibal Hamlin in 1861, is a town rich in heritage. The nearby Hamlin Beach State Park, spanning 1,287 acres, boasts sandy beaches, hiking and biking trails, and a nature trail with educational markers. The park's history includes a Civilian Conservation Corps camp and a World War II POW camp, adding a unique historical dimension to your visit. Whether you're here to relax under the stars, explore the rich history, or enjoy the natural beauty of the region, The Homestead at 1868 provides a perfect setting. Welcome, Mission Conesus, originally built by Franciscan Catholics. These lands were likely chosen for many reasons. Suffice it to say there is something special here. Come discover for yourself. Lose yourself here, or maybe find yourself, among the Hemlocks. First, a bit about the terrain. There is much in the way of forest, very mature, and a broad array of plant species. Elevation differences are vast, land to the west is uphill for quite a ways, and downhill to the east, to Hemlock lake below, so the world here can feel a bit tilted. We adjoin 150 acres of nature conservancy lands that nobody seems to know about. These lands are for respectful public daytime use. We also adjoin 6600 acres of NY state forest which is public property. Exploring all that is here would take a very long time! Want to get away? Welcome to our little slice of heaven. See the provided map for site locations. Site 1 is open field and is near the pavilion, sites 2 and 3 are along the woods, and site 4 is the most private and tucked into the woods. We have a small, 4 acre spot in the country, surrounded by farmland and woodland, and it adjoins hundreds of acres of state land and private property that both allow for hiking, nature walks, bird spotting, biking, and quiet. We're close to Letchworth State Park, quaint country villages, Darien Lake, and we're 40 minutes from Buffalo and Rochester. We have a large tent available, and space for RVs and campers. We've made some small upgrades - an air mattress, new woodstove, and an outhouse. We'll be updating pictures soon. If you have questions, let us know. Here is a video made recently by a couple who thoroughly enjoyed their time at our site. (It's a longer video - skip to 8 min 40 seconds to see their arrival at the tent.) https://youtu.be/BM6I83-d31g?feature=shared

My husband and I bought our camp property when our children were young, and our kids grew up there. Between frog-catching contests, paddle boats, picnics, dirt biking, bonfires, camp outs, and the occasional wedding it was our special getaway. Now that the kids are growing up and going out on adventures of their own, we decided it's time we share our little piece of heaven with others, and so here we are, meeting new people from all over the world, making new connections, and enjoying the opportunity to share this beautiful woodland and pond property that we've been blessed with. We'd love for YOU to come enjoy a stay at this whimsical, delightful, sacred place.
