The best campgrounds near Rochester, New York with horseback riding

Tourists often overlook this historic small city located on Lake Ontario. But locals know that Rochester is prime terrain for exploring western New York. niagara falls is 1 1/2 hours away and the Finger Lakes just an hour. The city itself is a hub for festivals, making summer the prime season to visit.

Lake Ontario offers nearly 200 miles of fresh water to swim, fish, and kayak. About 30 miles from Rochester, Hamlin Beach State Park is a favorite for lakeside camping. The family-friendly camp has tent and trailer sites with electrical hookups. Sandy beaches with lifeguards and a boat launch offer easy water access, plus beach trails for walking and biking.

For wilder terrain, make a day trip to the Braddock Bay Wildlife Management Area. Nature trails crisscross these marshes--a flyway stop for harriers, kingfishers, and herons, among other species. It's a beautiful spot for kayaking, and several boat launches make getting in the water easy. There's also a fishing pier on Salmon Creek to cast your line.

The Finger Lakes are worthy of destination camping all by themselves. In addition to scenic waterfall trails and boating, the region has first-rate golf courses and many wineries.

Sampson State Park is an excellent home base for exploring. Located on Seneca Lake, the large campground has cabins and several loops of campsites. A snack bar on the beach and a marina give the park a busy feel. There's also a military museum with retired fighter jets parked outside on the grass.

If you want to stay closer to Rochester, private campgrounds are your best bet. You can find cottages right out of a summer camp and RV parks with creature comforts like full hookups and Wi-Fi. The closest public campgrounds are in Webster Park in the nearby town of Webster. This small camp is set amid miles of nature trails and a short walk from the fishing pier on Lake Ontario.

We are just a mile north of Seneca lake providing easy access to Geneva and the many wine trails. this is basic camping area with no hookups but an electric generator is available. There is a dock, fishing, picnic table and deck, and fire pit, you will have the entire area to yourself and can set up camp whenever you would like. There are many areas to spread out individual campsites for large groups if desired. we have added a large porta potty.

We had such a wonderful birthday trip on Tommy’s land and in the surrounding area. Our site was the hilltop overlooking the rolling hills on one side and the forest on the other. It was perfect! Very private although the other site down the hill wasn’t occupied. They are spread apart quite a ways and both have picnic tables and fire rings. Tommy and his wife, Laura, both very nice and generous hosts, brought us plenty of free wood for our stay. Upon check-in, he greeted us and was very hospitable, offering suggestions for area must-sees for scenery, parks, wineries, food etc. They do offer usage of a flush toilet and sink in the end of their house, if desired. We’re pretty self-contained campers and didn’t utilize them. The property is very neat and clean in a rural area. We especially loved seeing the horse and cows each day as we are both originally from small farming towns. We would highly recommend this Hipcamp to anyone wanting a serene getaway with beautiful landscape and gracious host. Was a perfect trip! While you’re here, check out the Chimney Bluffs on Lake Ontario. They are super cool!

Weekend Trip to The Stone Shanty

We had a super relaxing weekend stay at The Stone Shanty and Amy was was a very friendly and easygoing host. The property itself is very beautiful, with the site we stayed at overlooking a scenic pond. Loved hearing owls as the sun was setting and once it was dark, the view of the stars was amazing. It happened to be a "new moon" the weekend we were there which made the sky even darker and we saw many shooting stars and could clearly see the Milky Way. We will be back again!

Weekend Trip to The Stone Shanty

Amy is a very kind host with great communication. There is a neat little covered patio area with a 'bar' type setup with stools. If it rained you could definitely hold out in there for a bit. Plenty of benches and picnic tables. The pond was nice. Kids would love swimming in it. The area near the pond has a great view of the sky and it's quite dark out there for good star gazing. It was very quiet day and night. This is not a 'glamping experience'. It's a neat, rustic piece of property, in a great location.

Apple cove is a beautiful campground, the tent area was perfect with plenty of room. Our host James level of hospitality was amazing. We will definitely be coming back.

7 nights at Mission Hemlock Grove

I wound up staying at Mission Hemlock Grove for 2 weeks in early September while my truck was getting transmission work. I had to make several day trips to Rochester and always felt safe leaving my belongings behind at site 1. There are some interesting trails and sights on the property including abandoned Christian grottos. I met some other very nice campers during my stay but always felt like I had plenty of privacy. Korey was very responsive from my experience. I’d recommend this property to someone who is boondock ready

1 night at Mission Hemlock Grove

Camp site 4 was just big enough to get a Frontier into. The sites are spaced enough that you don't see each other but could hear louder talk. Every site has a campfire ring. Porta potty was in the central field area and was getting pretty full but was stocked with TP and sanitizer. Really nice trails right on site, with a trail down to the lake. We didn't look for the bathroom or water supply so can't comment on that.

Weekend Trip to Spring lake retreat on the farm

A beautiful and well cared for campsite set on the top of a hill, at the edge of the woods and overlooking the endless rolling hills. One of the most peaceful night’s camping that we have ever had. Tommy is an exceptional host who made us feel welcome from the moment we arrived. Feeding his 15 friendly cows was the highlight of the day for my wife. Just a few miles to Chimney Bluffs SP, Wolcott Falls and Sodus Point, I highly recommend this property. We will definitely be returning!

1 night at Spring lake retreat on the farm

This is a gem of a hipcsmp! Tommy is so friendly and eager to show you around. The animals are well cared for and the camping spots are peaceful and lovely. We loved it and highly recommend staying here. We were only one night but I could see staying longer to explore the lakeshore.
