The best airstreams near New Paltz

·
About 90 minutes north of New York City, this college town sits on the Wallkill River facing dramatic stone cliffs. New Paltz has a laid-back feel, with corner pubs and farmers markets to grab camping ingredients. The historic village is close to the Hudson River and the Catskill Mountains, so it's easy to make day trips to both. Just 8 miles away, the Shawangunk Mountains loom on the horizon. Locals call them the Gunks. The Minnewaska State Park Preserve is here, offering hiking trails, waterfalls, and world-class rock-climbing. Bikes can explore the lovely carriage roads, and there's swimming at Lake Minnewaska. The Mohonk Preserve is a protected section of this same mountain ridge. The recently constructed Samuel F. Pryor III Shawangunk Gateway Campground is here. The tent-only campgrounds offer both walk-in and drive-in spots, plus a communal cooking area with a pavilion. New Paltz has about a half dozen private campgrounds within a short drive. Options range from RV parks with full hook-ups to private farms, rustic cabins, and outdoor resorts with swimming pools. Less than an hour's drive away, campers can pitch a tent at other large public parks. The 14,000-acre Fahnestock State Park is to the south. To the north is the Kenneth L. Wilson Campground near Slide Mountain, the Catskill's highest peak.

Step into a little time machine into 1968, in a vintage Airstream trailer nestled in the heart of Woodstock, NY half a mile from town. The trailer sleeps 4, with 2 twin beds, and 1 small double bed (full size). We have two harmless mini-Australian shepherds, so visitors should be dog-friendly, and willing to meet them upon arrival (they hang out sometimes in very large fenced in area visible from where the trailer is, so familiarity helps). There is a shower in the trailer, but the “WC” with toilet is just outside in the little green shed pictured; it has a state-of-the-art electric composting toilet. (The trailer has a little chamber pot set up for those who get up during the night and don’t want to venture out). We also have a large heated swimming pool and a nearby outdoor shower, as well as a nice vegetable and flower garden, which visitors are welcome to harvest from. There is a backyard with a playground and trampoline as well, for people who have children. Small campfires are permitted, either in the area in front of the trailer or in the nearby garden area. We are located a half a mile from town, and there is a nice walk to get there that is scenic and quiet. Visitors are welcome to borrow our bikes – there is one adult size and three kid bikes in various sizes – as long as they are properly locked up with the locks provided. There is a ceramics studio on site that visitors are welcome to use, and a materials/firing fee would apply, and pieces can be mailed to the recipient once finished. We can work out the details of this separately. Finally, happy to offer plenty of advice and tips about the high points of the area, whether it be hiking spots, swimming spots, restaurants, music, venues, or anything else!
