A great place to relax under the stars, have a camp fire, and kick back next to your travel rig after a long day. You might just want to crash for the night in a safe location out on the rangeland or stay a day or two to enjoy the land to walk, mountain bike antelope trails, and maybe even Sniffers the pronghorn antelope will find ya before you head out. This is a primitive site, so leave no trace practice is appreciated and pack in/out is how we do it here. If you come in the summer prepare the morning coffee early and enjoy the desert sun's rays hit the Capitan, but by 9am it will be hot, so be ready! Best star gazing and satellite watching in the world! I have several sites to choose from. But remember to keep an eye on the wind and weather as it can get crazy out here sometimes…..!!! I try to keep the sites stocked with firewood, but fill free to bring your own. Lonely Bull Camp 1 is my most popular site. It is very private and is easily accessible by most vehicles and campers. Ask about Lonely Bull Camp 4x4 if you have a capable vehicle. Amazing stars!! Old Highway Camp is a great alternative if you want something closer to the highway and have a safe private place to pull over, camp, kickback, make a fire and get back to your life on the on the road in the morning. It is closer to the highway, but is quite at night and has great star gazing. Enjoy being greeted by The Mountain in the morning. The Enchanted Circle Campground sits on the Avalon Ranch. It is 161 owned acres surrounded by a state trust lease. We are very proud to have been voted #1 Campground in NM 4 years in a row and ranked Top 5 by Forbes in the country. We have 8 Sites to choose from. (No large RVs at 4, 7 or 8) Campfires are permitted, and pets are welcome. Free potable water is available as well as a portable toilet. For cooking, you will have a fire pit, with a cast iron grill. Every site (but 7) has a standing charcoal grill, with tongs, a spatula and a grill brush. A fire extinguisher and a shovel. We hang a hand washing jug at every site for your convenience, with potable water, but do not suggest this for drinking water source. The property was originally homesteaded in 1893. It was also the first potato farm in NM. It has seven ground-fed springs that run year-round and is officially the Coyote Creeks Headwaters. The springs converge after filling 4 of our ponds in the marshland where the potatoes were grown. A family of 4 lived in the first dwelling built here, not much larger than a shed. Since that time, 2 homes, 1 of which still stands, a barn, a smokehouse, and 4 other outbuildings were constructed. There are old wagons and farm equipment from the late 1800s and early 1900's still strewn about the ranch. We are home to Huge herds of Elk, mule deer, turkeys, prairie dogs, eagles, black bears, 9 horses, chickens, pigs, goats, our 2 dogs and 4 cats, and the occasional Mountain Lion. We live here year-round. We love our land and want to share it with others. I am a Veteran and our intent is to eventually have a Veterans Retreat facility here. Not a retreat itself, but rather a location for all of the retreats, nationwide, to be able to utilize, so they can use the funds they have to do what they do best. You are helping to make that possible. We do pride ourselves on minimally impacting our land. We strive to keep it clean and as close to nature as we can. And as always, Veterans, LEOs, and Fire Fighters are always free for one night up to 4 guests. Very nice little spot. It’s tucked in the back of a main road and very dark at night. We loved that part as the sky was so beautiful! This is a perfect stop over spot. The price is fair and having the Owl Restaurant down the street is a bonus. Definitely get the green chili cheese burger! The host was very responsive and nice. We will definitely be staying again sometime in the future.

7 nights at Desert Rose Stopover

I stayed for two weeks and had a wonderful time! It’a relatively quiet, peaceful, and the sky is dark so you can stargaze. I saw the Milky Way, comet Lemmon, and a dozen shooting stars. You get to see both the sunset and sunrise. I enjoyed the swing and the ample amount of space that the site offered. You are close to town for anything you may need. And consider taking a day trip out to the mountains! I honestly did not want to leave, but I needed to get going on my roadtrip. I’ll absolutely be back here!

We stayed here with Luke twice, both coming and going through Albuquerque. We found the site to be very convenient to everything we wanted to see, and to access the freeways. Luke, as our host, was an excellent communicator, and was most accommodating, letting us know we could have late check out one day as his next guest was not coming until later. The site was level, private, and quiet. One thing to be aware of— we are somewhat small/ 40 Ft combined truck and trailer, and with another camper already occupying the rear of the camp, the turning radius was a little tight and took a little skill. This was not a deal breaker- just something to be aware of.

My stay at the year on the Mesa top totally exceeded my expectations. Kate was there to greet me and show me around and really has put many magical touches on the place. There was everything I need to cook, do dishes, even take an outdoor shower. I came in late fall, and while it was cold at night, the propane heater was toasty. And the bedding was amazing, so I didn’t even need the heater when I slept. The views and the stars and the location are unparalled. I would definitely come back!

Amazing view and great tent set up spot. Fire pit is perfect and the drive up is smooth. The hosts are very helpful and provide basic elements to help your stay much more comfortable. Will definitely use again.

This hipcamp was super easy. Lots of space, there weren’t that many people there so it felt really private. The showers/bathrooms were great. We had a lovely night here

We enjoyed a night right near the Bosque del Apache. Vanetta was very friendly and helpful.

We didn’t know their names so we called them Frankie and Lola.

1 night at Mountain View Campground

The campsites are in a slightly hilly, brushy area, so there’s some privacy built in. We picked campsite 11 so we could watch the beautiful sunset, and sunrise. It was so quiet out there!! Beautiful stars at night. The porta potty was clean and nearby and there were trash cans next to it. It was only our 2nd time hip camping so I was surprised that there wasnt a table and fire ring, just a space to camp . There were rocks to make a fire ring and we used our camping boxes for a table, so we were fine , but we’ll get a table top for future hipcamping. The owner’s two dogs joined us in the morning and were super friendly and fun.

6 nights at Secluded Indoor Camping

Tara's place was more than I had hoped for for a place to sleep during the balloon festival and adventures around Albuquerque. It's in a quiet neighborhood and near old town. She provided a comfy bed, extra bedding, dining table and chairs, microwave, toaster oven, small fridge, kitchen sink and toilet. If you have extra people she'll also provide an extra mattress. Remember to bring mosquito repellent, as there are many mosquitos in the area.
