Carter's Cross Country Ski Center and Shop has been a family-owned business since 1984. The land on which the trails have been built on has been in the Carter family since the late 1700's. The first Carter who came to Bethel was the first doctor in the area that helped Mollyocket, a Native American medicine woman.
All the different generations that came along after were either farmers or loggers or both. Carter's XC Ski Center is located on the banks of the Big Androscoggin River. Our private established skiing/walking trails meander through the Maine woods all the way up to Farwell Mountain, overlooking Sunday River Ski, the Presidential and Mahoosuc Mountain Ranges and Mt. Washington. Nearby is Middle Intervale Farm, owned by John Carter, who produces his own vegetables and meat. He has a small, self-serve farm stand right on Intervale Road, next to Carter's.

We are off the beaten path in the forest near the White Mountain National Forest. A 6 to 8 minute hike from your site gets you to a private lake.
We have two local waterfalls only 2 miles away. Drive back out to 5 Kezars road. Take a right on the paved road. It will turn back into dirt. Keep on this road until you see a beautiful stone house on your left. Keep going just up the hill and you will see a right turn into the woods where you can park. There are no signs for Kezar gorge. Hike towards the sound of the falls. There is a small cave under the falls you can climb up into if you are a strong swimmer. There is a second set of falls if you hike down the river. A most magical spot for sure.

Virginia lake is in the White Mountain National forest and is only 6 miles ( a ten minute drive away) Sometimes you have to hike in a bit to get to the beach. Very private. Shallow beach is great for children and dogs.
Keewayden Lake Dam is a fun place to swim in a local lake. Only an 8 minute drive
Keoka lake has a nice beach with a dock to swim too. !0 minute drive

This is 35 miles through the White Mountains with no gas stations, so you might want to top off while in Lincoln.
Thirty minutes east is the Mount Washington Cog Railway, and you will pass the historic Mount Washington Hotel on the way. Fifteen minutes south and you can be at Franconia Notch State Park.

Parking for both sites are shared. The tent is 50 yards up a rustic wooded path through the woods and the yurt is an 800 yard (10 minute) uphill walk from the parking area.
Both sites are adjacent to our local network of hiking/biking trails that connect to the summit of Mount Agassiz, which offers stunning views of Franconia Notch. Additionally, within a half hour drive, you have access to some of the best hiking in the North East. We are happy to provide recommendations! The surrounding towns are home to three different breweries, numerous restaurants serving up delicious food and quaint main streets.

The right to roam, also called the right of access, or everyman's right(“allemannsretten”) is a traditional right from ancient times, and since 1957 has also been a part of the Norwegian Outdoor Recreation Act. It ensures that everybody gets to experience nature, even on larger privately owned
areas.
In our travels to Norway, we learned of this law and loved the concept so much we brought it back with us to America. Yet we had no land to offer. So, we searched...and searched....and searched some more. Then we found what would become camp Streife. 20 acres of uncut timber growth forest, tucked in the hills of Rumford Maine. With a nearby brook, pond and within 20 minutes of some of our favorite ski locations it was just right.
The rules of this law are simple.
Be considerate and thoughtful. Don't damage nature and other surroundings. Leave the landscape as you would want to find it. Leave no trace. You may put up a tent, or sleep under the stars, for the night anywhere in the countryside, forests or mountains, as long as you keep at least 500 feet away from the nearest inhabited house or cabin. This rule of 500 feet distance also applies to camping cars and
caravans.
If you want to stay for more than two nights in the same place, you must
ask the landowner's permission, except in the mountains or very remote
areas.
Well, we've taken care of all those Allemannsretten rules for you.

"What should I expect my experience to be like?"
Being a hostel, the experience we offer is a community focused one. Sites are setup similar to rooms in the hostel. They are located in fairly close proximity to one another and feature (in addition to private fire pits in the sites) one large community fire ring at the center of the property.
Parking and camping are located at the rear of the Hostel property. Out back features several campsites, a community fire ring, picnic table, and charcoal grill. Parking is first come, first serve, but there is plenty of street parking available along Washington St (Summertime street parking. In winter, town hall may be used as overflow parking.).

For Sites 1-4, the hostel is yours to access. Use the back porch and side entrances (Access code will be given to you during check-in). Inside you’ll find… Full community kitchen, bathrooms/hot showers, dining area, and lounge area.
Dorm style bathroom facilities on the second floor have two toilets and shower stalls each. PLEASE NOTE: Towels can be rented for $5, or bring your own for free.

My 8-acre property used to be a hay field. The farm is long gone and I've been reclaiming the open meadow for a few years now. I only mow once a year in order to leave flowers and grasses for the birds and insects, including the honey bees and monarch butterflies who love the milkweed, goldenrod, asters and other wild flowers that grow here. I keep just a few narrow paths and the campsite mowed, You will be sharing your site with the wild world, including the owls who live here. Bears are not infrequent visitors and food should be carefully kept out of your tent and preferably locked in your vehicle with the windows up.
I have a small house on the property and keep to myself at the other end of the open field from where your campsite is. I am available if you have a problem or need help with something, but you are on your own otherwise! Because my house is beyond your parking area, I do drive by going about my own business, but I can't see your campsite from my house unless I stand in my upstairs loft and look out the window at the other side of the house. I usually only do that so I can see if your vehicle is here or not.

Pitch a tent or two on the flat grassy edge of my meadow and enjoy the proximity to town and all the outdoor sports the White Mountains offer. There is afternoon shade over the site. This is a primitive site - no electricity, no running water, no security lights, and no covered pad. There is a picnic table, a fire pit suitable for cooking over, and a clean wooden outhouse. It's very private and although my house is nearby, I'm happy to just leave you alone.
I sell bundles of firewood, but you can bring your own, if you want. Please just don't bring any wood in from outside this immediate area - I don't want any new non-native insects being brought in.

Moose, deer, and bear tracks are common, but animal encounters are not - still, please sequester your food accordingly and be mindful to carry out scraps or place them in lidded containers provided.

Carter's Cross Country Ski Center and Shop has been a family-owned business since 1984. The land on which the trails have been built on has been in the Carter family since the late 1700's. The first Carter who came to Bethel was the first doctor in the area that helped Mollyocket, a Native American medicine woman.
All the different generations that came along after were either farmers or loggers or both. Carter's XC Ski Center is located on the banks of the Big Androscoggin River. Our private established skiing/walking trails meander through the Maine woods all the way up to Farwell Mountain, overlooking Sunday River Ski, the Presidential and Mahoosuc Mountain Ranges and Mt. We are off the beaten path in the forest near the White Mountain National Forest. A 6 to 8 minute hike from your site gets you to a private lake.
We have two local waterfalls only 2 miles away. Drive back out to 5 Kezars road. Take a right on the paved road. It will turn back into dirt. Keep on this road until you see a beautiful stone house on your left. Keep going just up the hill and you will see a right turn into the woods where you can park. There are no signs for Kezar gorge. Hike towards the sound of the falls. There is a small cave under the falls you can climb up into if you are a strong swimmer. There is a second set of falls if you hike down the river. A most magical spot for sure.

Virginia lake is in the White Mountain National forest and is only 6 miles ( a ten minute drive away) Sometimes you have to hike in a bit to get to the beach. Very private. Shallow beach is great for children and dogs.
Keewayden Lake Dam is a fun place to swim in a local lake. Only an 8 minute drive

Parking for both sites are shared. The tent is 50 yards up a rustic wooded path through the woods and the yurt is an 800 yard (10 minute) uphill walk from the parking area.
Both sites are adjacent to our local network of hiking/biking trails that connect to the summit of Mount Agassiz, which offers stunning views of Franconia Notch. The right to roam, also called the right of access, or everyman's right(“allemannsretten”) is a traditional right from ancient times, and since 1957 has also been a part of the Norwegian Outdoor Recreation Act. It ensures that everybody gets to experience nature, even on larger privately owned

In our travels to Norway, we learned of this law and loved the concept so much we brought it back with us to America. Yet we had no land to offer. So, we searched...and searched....and searched some more. Then we found what would become camp Streife. 20 acres of uncut timber growth forest, tucked in the hills of Rumford Maine. With a nearby brook, pond and within 20 minutes of some of our favorite ski locations it was just right.
The rules of this law are simple.
Be considerate and thoughtful. Don't damage nature and other surroundings. Leave the landscape as you would want to find it. Leave no trace. You may put up a tent, or sleep under the stars, for the night anywhere in the countryside, forests or mountains, as long as you keep at least 500 feet away from the nearest inhabited house or cabin. This rule of 500 feet distance also applies to camping cars and
caravans.
If you want to stay for more than two nights in the same place, you must
ask the landowner's permission, except in the mountains or very remote
areas.

Being a hostel, the experience we offer is a community focused one. Sites are setup similar to rooms in the hostel. They are located in fairly close proximity to one another and feature (in addition to private fire pits in the sites) one large community fire ring at the center of the property.
Parking and camping are located at the rear of the Hostel property. Out back features several campsites, a community fire ring, picnic table, and charcoal grill. Parking is first come, first serve, but there is plenty of street parking available along Washington St (Summertime street parking. In winter, town hall may be used as overflow parking.).

My 8-acre property used to be a hay field. The farm is long gone and I've been reclaiming the open meadow for a few years now. I only mow once a year in order to leave flowers and grasses for the birds and insects, including the honey bees and monarch butterflies who love the milkweed, goldenrod, asters and other wild flowers that grow here. I keep just a few narrow paths and the campsite mowed, You will be sharing your site with the wild world, including the owls who live here. Bears are not infrequent visitors and food should be carefully kept out of your tent and preferably locked in your vehicle with the windows up.
I have a small house on the property and keep to myself at the other end of the open field from where your campsite is. I am available if you have a problem or need help with something, but you are on your own otherwise! Because my house is beyond your parking area, I do drive by going about my own business, but I can't see your campsite from my house unless I stand in my upstairs loft and look out the window at the other side of the house. I usually only do that so I can see if your vehicle is here or not.

Pitch a tent or two on the flat grassy edge of my meadow and enjoy the proximity to town and all the outdoor sports the White Mountains offer. There is afternoon shade over the site. This is a primitive site - no electricity, no running water, no security lights, and no covered pad. There is a picnic table, a fire pit suitable for cooking over, and a clean wooden outhouse. It's very private and although my house is nearby, I'm happy to just leave you alone.
I sell bundles of firewood, but you can bring your own, if you want. Please just don't bring any wood in from outside this immediate area - I don't want any new non-native insects being brought in.

So this spot wasn't reachable in our campervan. But, Ryan went above and beyond to get us set up at another site close by. The location to Loon and the surrounding area at either site is fantastic and we plan on returning in the spring to explore more!

We had such a great time at the yurt and exploring the property with our two dogs! Morgan did a great job of showing us everything we needed to know for our stay. The yurt itself is absolutely beautiful and truly makes you feel like you’re sleeping in nature. The location that they chose to build the yurt provides an amazing view of the mountains right out the front window. We opted to use the wood-fired hot tub while we were there and it was a fantastic experience. Although the wood stove was out of commission during our stay, the space heaters that were provided were more than enough to keep the yurt toasty, even during the cold late November nights. We would gladly come back again!

The site was lovely and as expected - riverside with a picnic table and a nice wide flat surface for setting up our 2-person tent. As described, it is a fairly steep (but wide) path to get down to the site, though we managed even after dark with head lamps on and a slow pace. There is a shared fire pit for all three sites at one of the sites. The privy was clean, well maintained, and centrally located.
The host, Abi, was responsive and provided detailed information about how to get to the site, the expectations, and amenities.

My friend and I had such a lovely time! Our host Ryan was beyond helpful and kind to make sure our stay went well. The site was well maintained and easy to find. We also had a great open sky to stargaze and fresh snow in the morning which made our experience so much more fun. This was my first Hipcamp experience and it was a wonderful first impression!

I loved camping on Lori's land. All the glamping tents are very private, and you have to walk about 100 yards from the car, so there is no noise at all. The outhouse was super clean and so cool inside. The bed in the tent was very comfortable and had enough room for the dog as well. The land is beautiful with North Conway only a 30 min drive for great food and coffee! I highly recommend this Hip Camp!

My husband and I stayed for the weekend and had such a relaxing time. You’re truly alone (aside from a neighbor going by a couple times a day, but that wasn’t a big deal. If anything, it was comfort just in case any emergencies happened.) It was incredibly peaceful with the sound of the stream. A beautiful walk up to a gorgeous pond with a small mountain in the distance. Nice campfire with a grate that swivels for cooking over the fire. The platform you can set your tent up on was fantastic! The site would be a great spot for star gazing because of the lack of light pollution, but it was cloudy every night for us. We will most certainly be back!

Weekend Trip to Mead Hill at Mount Cabot Maple
We stayed in the yurt for a weekend and loved it! Bed was comfy and thought the woodstove wasn't working, the space heater kept us cozy. Morgan and Rush were excellent hosts, answered all our questions graciously and made us very welcome. The woodfired hot tub was glorious. Hope we can visit again someday!

We tent camped at the Riverside site in late October and had a wonderful time! Our firewood was waiting for us by the pit and we had a great night camping. Bathroom is clean and well stocked and the river is only a few steps away. Lovely all around and an A+ experience communicating with Abi. Thank you!

We had a phenominal time during a little late season camping trip here. The land was stunning and provided awesome views of the stars at night; the stream made for great ambient sound, all around great area! Sean was super friendly and we even got to meet the goats! Short drive away from Norway and Bethel, would defintiely recommened if you're looking for a weekend getaway trip.
