Under no circumstances should visitors trespass over to any of the neighboring properties. We have had multiple campers trespassing across the fence to the neighbors property. Neighbors are nice people but because of the multiple incidents and damage done to fences and their property, they did notify me that they will prosecute. Thank you for respecting this policy.

It is a private camping club which is made up of 10 waterfront acres along the main channel/current of the majestic Missouri River. It is about 2.5 miles SW of Wathena, KS and is bordered by Walnut creek to the south and a small creek just north of the boat ramp. We do not have staff on site on a scheduled basis. Campground and riverfont access is for registered guest only, there are no public facilities.
Larger RV sites with electric only (30 amp camper plugs). The nearest RV dump station is at Love's Truck stop in St. Joseph 14 miles to the East. Each site has its own fire ring. You may bring your own wood or buy some at Casey's in Wathena. There is a hydrant near the elevated deck which is supplied with city water in case you need to fill jugs.
Feel free to fish and enjoy shore fires along the banks of the Missouri River, but do so at your own risk and supervise minors at all times. Remember to bring your own fishing gear for an immersive experience by the water. Experience the tranquility of the riverfront and make the most of your stay.
There is a fairly steep boat ramp past site 10. There are public boat ramps that are maintained in nearby Elwood, St. Joseph (near the Casino) and Atchison. This ramp can only be used by registered campground guest only and users assume all risk to themselves and property.
The campground is at the original steamboat landing and downtown of the now ghost town of Palermo, KS. Nearby town of Wathena (2.5 miles) is the site of the beginning of the California Trail where settlers were let off at the river NE of town (area and trail is marked) and headed west. The Pony Express started at nearby St. Joseph, MO (9 miles) and passed through the area. It has a museum. Wathena has Star 36 Diner (breakfast, lunch and supper), the legendary Dairy Barn (ice cream and food options), VFW bar, quilting store.

Seated on a secluded one-acre site, Deer Lake Retreat offers a peaceful, primitive camping experience in the heart of nature. This cozy, private spot is perfect for those looking to disconnect and enjoy the beauty of the outdoors.
The camp features a covered camping structure with two twin mattresses; you must provide your own bedding. There’s plenty of space for an additional tent, allowing for a small group or family to enjoy the campsite. There is parking for up to three cars, and the campsite is easy to access.
The campsite is equipped with a fire pit and firewood provided. Tiki torches are provided, but you must bring your own torch fuel. There’s also a table for food prep. This site has a porta-potty but no shower or running water.
Access to the lake for fishing, swimming, and paddling is available, but you’ll need to purchase a day pass through the City of Crystal Lakes website, which gives you access to all five lakes in the area. While swimming is allowed, we recommend you use the lakes for fishing and paddling only.

It has given me such peace and a great escape that I think everyone deserves to touch a piece of its soul to help you in your soul searching or unplugging from life to clear your mind to tackle the world!
I’ve grown up seeing the land change, watching how nature can change streams and hills and love seeing how years and years of leaving it alone can create such a beautiful canvas all on its own.

Great views and lots to see. We really loved waking up and having the grazing horses greet us right outside our door. My dogs both loved exploring the lake. The lighting of the grill house and adjoining lakefront lounge area make this a fun spot to explore during the day or for night walks. I definitely will be booking again.

Great place to set up a camper! All the amenities work flawlessly! Water, power, sewer, even a dumpster on site for your household trash! The host was very nice and informed me of weather and anything other information that could be helpful to me during my stay!

MILO farms was a great area to explore. All the lands and landmarks blend in with the beautiful wildlife. Everyone we met was friendly, even I. The donkeys were a little standoffish at first. The boho bus was small but cozy, another very thoughtfully put-together space. We visited for a surprising warm weekend in fervruary but hope to come back in summer/fall!

Like an oasis in the desert — so close to town, yet it felt completely remote and peaceful. The drive in on the trail to the campsite genuinely felt like wheeling through the Arkansas wilderness, which made the whole experience even better. Walking through the trails was fun. We can’t wait to come back in the spring. The Hobbit Hut was nice but smaller than we thought. The fire pit and animals were great for the kids. We went in early winter with some rain and still had a great time.

Where to go
Wallace State Park
For an upgraded public camping experience near Cameron, visit Wallace State Park. Large basic and electric sites can accommodate both tents and RVs. Walk-in sites offer extra serenity for tent campers. Lake Allaman is the central focus point, a blue gem surrounded by green hills, offering fishing, boating, and more. Trails crisscross the woodlands.
St. Joseph
Head west from Cameron, just as the pioneers did to reach one of the starting points of the Oregon Trail in St. Joseph. Explore history and architecture that tells tales of bygone eras. Near town, public camping is offered at Lewis and Clark State Park, as well as several locations operated by the Department of Natural Resources. Several RV parks offer a full slate of amenities in the area.
Watkins Mill State Park
Watkins Woolen Mill State Historic Site, located 25 miles south of Cameron, provides education, beauty, and recreation, all in one package. The park’s focal point is a 19th-century textile mill and several other historic structures. A 100-acre lake provides a scenic spot for fishing, paddling, and boating, and surrounding trails offer space for hiking and biking. The wooded campground has almost 100 sites, most of which have electric hookups.
Kansas City
Just 50 miles southwest of Cameron lies one of Missouri’s largest cities, Kansas City. Jazz and blues, barbecue, and baseball are just three things residents and visitors love about this energetic town. The vibrant downtown showcases history, arts, and culture. Several private RV parks dot the suburbs, catering to families and those seeking full hookups. Outside of the city, public camping can be enjoyed at Weston Bend State Park.
When to go
Summer is when most activities are in full swing, though some days may have sweltering heat and humidity. Spring and fall are more moderate, with fall offering extra beauty as the forests pop with color. Winter is not a popular time for camping, due to freezing temperatures and occasional snow and ice, but some parks are open year round.
