We stayed at Sue’s Yurt for two nights and had a wonderful experience. It’s a cozy, private retreat with thoughtful amenities that made our stay comfortable. We took a snowmobiling trip up the Babbit and found Duluth easily accessible by car. The yurt itself is well-equipped with a comfortable bed and a mini kitchen. The wood stove works efficiently, keeping the space warm when tended for a while. We also loved exploring the nearby trails, which added to the charm of our stay. Overall, a great place for a peaceful getaway!

This was such an amazing stay! Sue has thought of everything! The wood stove kept the space toasty warm, only needing 1 refill a night at 4 or 5am. We loved all the lanterns and how they created a cozy vibe each night after it got dark. We definitely plan to return for another winter getaway!

When our travel plans fell through, I was excited to stumble upon the Meadows cabin as a holiday alternative. Communication with the hosts was prompt and clear and we enjoyed the chance to bring along our dogs with the fair pet policy. From K-cups to dog treats, the hosts had us covered and all we had to do was show up and slow down. Highlights for us included the indoor fireplace and nearby river views. This was an extremely positive experience that I’d be eager to recommend and book again.

The little wooded sleeping cottage was the perfect place for me to visit on my solo writing retreat. I slept very soundly after a session in the sauna, and was greeted with a beautiful sunrise in the morning as I strolled around the property. The cottage was warm and cozy, and the location is perfect, too, as it’s just a short drive from Banning State Park. There are countless other places to hike nearby, birds to be watched, and some truly picturesque sights along the Kettle River. This would be a wonderful place to stay any time of the year; with thoughtful accommodations, very friendly hosts, and beautiful scenery, it was an absolute pleasure. Highly recommend, I’d love to go back someday!

The Hamlet Lake Homestead

The Hamlet Lake homestead is our 10-acre family home with two unique and private hip-camp sites. The Hamlet Lake Bunkhouse is located to the west of our home in its own secluded parcel next to the lake. The Camp on Hamlet Hill is to the north of our home, on a remote flat hill at the top of our property, on a hill over Cedar brook. with 300-acre, (private) Hamlet Lake in front, and the wide portion of the 20-mile Cedar brook in the back. We are a large "homesteading" family, with chickens, ducks, and a garden. The campsite is a private 1/2 acre clearing, surrounded by woods with a firepit, grill, cooking utensils, and an outhouse. (Tents are available for a small additional cost). There is an outdoor water pump below the hill. Guests can access the waterfront and beach in front, with the use of the swim raft, lily pad, fishing dock, canoe, kayak, and paddle boards included. At nearly 100 feet deep, Hamlet lake also boasts excellent fishing. Our home is located 6 miles from Crosby, with the world-class Cuyuna Lakes 50-mile mountain bike trail system. Crosby is a growing tourist town with many new and unique restaurants, outdoor adventures, and shopping opportunities. The paved bike trail begins 3.5 north of us. Milacs lake is 10 miles to the south.

If interested let us know and we can assist. This is a great location for each season. With your booking you will have access to the canoes and our dock. Tamarack Lake is wonderful for fishing panfish, pike, and smallmouth. Come fish any season! You can enjoy yourself exploring via canoe or relaxing with a book at our dock! With nearly 10,000 acres of state land out the backdoor and many trails, adventuring can always be done no matter the season. We enjoy hiking, snowshoeing, backcountry xxsking, and hunting depending on the time of year. It is a big property, but sometimes there are crafting classes, such as basketry, wild food education, hide tanning, etc. While most weekends are quiet around here if you’re looking for privacy feel free to check in with us to make sure we are not hosting classes during your stay. We raised kids and host international students here, and always enjoy meeting other travelers. We are now retired but still traveling and exploring. While living and teaching internationally we looked for adventure, staying in a wide range of hostels in developing countries around the globe. We have enjoyed staying in everything from bamboo long-houses in Borneo and Thailand to adobe shelters in the Andes to rondavel huts in South Africa. There are free range chickens and a friendly farm dog here, and there are sometimes dogs staying at the other cabin. There are also all kinds of wildlife in the area, so we require that dogs be supervised and leashed, for their safety and the safety of our chickens and our wild animal neighbors. No dogs may be left unattended on our property while you go out and about... take your canine pals with you! Quiet hours are dusk to 7am. If you choose to bring a dog, we want you to consider your dog's inclination for barking. We keep the peace and quiet of all of our guests in mind. We hope that you (and your pet) will have fun at our northern Minnesota retreat. Burnell and Ann enjoy having company, and hearing about your travels and adventures (if you feel like sharing) and want you to feel safe and secure. All people are welcome here, as long as you follow our reasonable rules! When you come into our driveway you will see our house and barn. One of us will meet you and take you down to your site. -We ask that people check in before ten at night your first evening, so as not to disturb other guests... ;) It is very difficult to find your way in the dark. DRAGON LOFT cabin has one double bed in a loft with a ladder. Great for two people. Very little extra sleeping space except for a dog bed or kennel below the loft. This space has a nice reading/coffee room, a private "and a deck with table and chairs and patio with a fire ring. You can cook on a grill we provide, outside. You have access to a dock on the pond, and full use of the trails in our wooded acres or play frisbee in the hayfield! RAVEN WATCH cabin is comfortable for up to four people (two full size beds) A bed upstairs overlooking the pond and downstairs by the wood stove. The little kitchen comes with a nice propane stove and wash area. There is space for sitting at the table and playing cards or reading on the sky-chair swing. Wood supply is right outside your door, the picnic table and fire ring are next to the creek, nearby. Sitting outside on the benches by the pond, you can enjoy a raised fire ring and roast some marshmallows. Price based on two adults. Small fee for up to two more people. Sad to say we have to say this again: NEVER leave a dog alone at the site while you are out and about. We/you do not want to deal with damages from doggies who feel left behind. Keep in mind the number of pets and limited in the space there is. Write to me if you have questions. We love our dog, too, but please, no animals are allowed on human beds. Bring your kennel or dog bed and leashes. We also love and respect our wild critters' space so keep yours on a leash and pick up all poop. :) No firearms, off-roading, fireworks, or other items or activities deemed to be dangerous by the hosts. No unregistered guests.

PRIMITIVE - HIKE IN CAMPSITE Wilderness Experience Minutes from Duluth About the campsite: THIS PROPERTY IS RUGGED WITH MINIMAL DEVELOPMENT BEYOND HIKING TRAIL AND CAMP AMENITIES. Camp Palustria is on the edge of a beautiful marsh within 75 feet of a trout stream. It is about 1000ft off of the Superior Hiking Trail. The campsite is primitive which includes fire pit with grill, table, and composting outhouse. The site is about a 600ft hike from the road where you'll park. The first 400ft of the trail is a swamp with a simple elevated boardwalk through most of it. 95% of the time is it passable with hiking boats or street shoes, but there might be some muddy spots. Dispersed winter camping is also available. This campsite was featured on NPR Marketplace Campsite is closed during hunting season. About the property: Trembling Gardens is my 10 acre swamp camp paradise in the rural suburb of Rice Lake. The property is about 20 minutes away from downtown Duluth and Canal Park and has easy access to the North Shore.

Balsam Ridge Retreat

Hello everyone! Thanks for your interest in Balsam Ridge! Many of you folks have been here and know how much we thouroughly enjoy hosting! Some of you also know that we've been caring for my 93 year old mom for the last two years here at our home. Over the winter we realized that as the days progress, so does the amount of care she needs. For this reason we've decided to put our retreat on pause, and give her our best for this last season of her life. We appreciate your understanding. Many folks that have visited our place refer to it as 'country living in the city'. We are so blessed to live in this little piece of serenity just inside the city limits of Duluth. It was once an abandoned house that sat for years, until a friend mentioned to us that it might be going up for sale. We loved the location and rolled up our sleeves. Twenty years later we still marvel at the beauty around us and can hardly believe that we LIVE here! Just down the road is a trout stream and just beyond that was a popular farm that attracted many folks to this neighborhood for hay rides and sleigh rides. The farm has since retired it's horses and closed it's doors to make room for new homes, but memories live on in the beauty of the open fields. I often imagine the sound of horses and sleigh bells and people singing carols and then warming up around a toasty fire sipping hot cocoa. Some of those memories live on right here at Balsam Ridge (minus the horses). Over the years many groups of folks have enjoyed a sense of community in these back woods no matter the season. Campfires, kids catching frogs, neighborhood campouts, snow picnics, hair-raising toboggan runs, family campouts, spiritual silent retreats, a take-your-breath-away giant swing, and some tales too daring to mention are all part of the fun. This is why we do what we do. We've been given much, and love to give back. It just wouldn't seem right to keep all this good to ourselves.

80 acres totally private and secluded, no dwellings on property. Multiple camping sites can accommodate pull-thru access for the largest 5th wheel combos, with more secluded tent spots only open to ATV, horse or hike access. Glamping packages, Campers, generators, and other equipment available to rent, water nearby no charge, dump station is 6 miles away they charge $10 as of this writing. Group camping options available. Legal ATV / UTV / Snowmobile direct access to hundreds of miles of trails, bars, restaurants from your campsite, no need to trailer your machines anywhere! We only rent to one party at a time for the whole 1/2 mile by 1/4 mile property you will not encounter other people here. Hunting prohibited at all times, but there is an extensive multi-mile trail system through the property that is yours to use exclusively during your stay. Extremely quiet, popular spot for astronomy with very very low light pollution. Dogs are welcome but please note this is a managed wildlife property, there are active black bear dens on the property, many deer, foxes, badgers, turkeys etc so all dogs need to be leashed - it has happened and it’s not fun for anyone, so this is not a guideline, it’s one of our very few “rules.” The other major rule is no fireworks at any time period. We had a forest fire that started from a firework, 3 fire departments required for it, not only did we lose about 5 acres of vegetation, the campers were charged the full cost of the fire department and DNR - again no fun for anyone. There is no place for fireworks of any kind here. Camp Fires are allowed in designated fire pits when DNR fire danger is below Moderate. Wildlife viewing and photography blinds and stands are available, fully enclosed and very comfortable with 360 degree views. Lots of fun surprises here and if you haven’t stayed on a piece this size, this natural as your private setting it’s an experience worth trying!
