Half way between Chicago and Detroit is a city named Kalamazoo. Our place is near the intersection of US 131 and I-94, so whichever direction you are traveling is accessible. Whether you are heading to the beauty of "up north" or running between the big cities east and west, this is a great spot to rest and enjoy some down time. Lake Michigan is a 40 minute drive west from here and if you are a bicyclist, you can ride the Kal-Haven Trail from the trail head about 2 miles from here, all the way to the Big Lake and back (35.5 miles one way). We have trails in the woods and open fields to look over, depending on your preference. As of this year, there is no electricity and water hookup, so tents or trailers with electric and water are your option. We have a bell tent available for a single or a couple to stay. On that same site is room for a trailer or tents, if you want to invite your friends, and we've built a cooking shelter and a bath house that has a compost toilet and a shower with on demand hot water from solar energy. We have a horse farm on the property and offer horse experiences (All our activities are done on the ground near or with the horses, so, no riding is offered) at an additional fee. It is expected that you will remain outside the fence from the horses while you are staying, unless you sign a release and are accompanied by the owner to interact with them. We do not allow dogs. There are two campsites cleared in the woods, for tent camping, and more will be cleared in 2025, as time allows. There will be a bathhouse with a compost toilet and on-demand hot water nearby those campsites. If you want to stay before our build, we will offer a lower rate, but expect you to take away your own waste when you leave or clarify with us where whether there is an appropriate place on the property to dispose of it. At some point during the fall of 2025, we are placing a restored vintage 1957 Ideal camper in a separate area of the property. It will have solar power and an indoor compost toilet, with a stove and sink. It will host a single or a couple who can sleep on a full sized mattress. Another sleeping area may be offered from converting the table, but we are not sure how comfortable it will be until we've completed the renovation.

This fun property is just under 7 acres - butted up to another 12 acres of public land (and boat launch) with trails, boardwalk and a dock on 51 acre Lake Eleven. The property is shared by (2) full-hook up RV sites and a cabin. If available, the cabin and sites may be rented together however the owners, Jim and Maria, use the cabin much of the summer leaving just the RV sites available. The property is at mile market 13 of the Kal-Haven Trail - the midpoint. The Kal-Haven Trail is a biking, cross-country skiing, walking, running, snowmobiling - you name it, the trail that goes 34 miles from Kalamazoo to South Haven. Literally steps from the property and you are on the trail. But you may not need to leave the property, with 6.3 acres of woods and field, with trail cut through PLUS the added public lands butted up to Tincan's property line, giving almost 20 acres to roam. Each RV site - far enough apart to be separate, close enough if you and friends/family want to camp together, has a fire pit and fireplace. Each RV site offers water, 30|50AMP electrical and septic. The dock may have availability for keeping you boat - please inquire. There are kayaks and some bikes (mostly teen and adult size) that may be used. These are shared amenities for the cabin and campsite guests and offered on a first come, first serve basis. There are surprises galore around the property; big foots to be found tucked around the property, games, and overall just a fun place to be. This was a run-down fishing cabin Jim and Maria lovingly brough back to life as a second home and they delight in sharing it. Jim often referred to it as "The Tincan" while working on it as it was - indeed, a tin shack and the name stuck. We are 13 minutes from South Haven and Lake Michigan, 30 minutes from the city of Kalamazoo and just under an hour from Grand Rapids. Those of you who have visited in the past will notice that we significantly downsized this year. Due to Township and State regulations, we are now limited to offering only four campsites unless we get licensed, which at this time is cost prohibitive. So, we have selected the four most highly rated sites and upgraded them, to truly make your experience here special. About half of the 20 acres is wooded, with walking trails around the property, to include our fish stocked pond and a little tributary of the Black River. All sites have a fire ring, or metal fire pit, and picnic table. We have an outdoor propane shower that provides both hot and cold water. A free refreshment bar is available 24/7. Feeling a little peckish before breakfast, or after dinner? Help yourself to a snack and a hot or cold drink. You are welcome to collect eggs for breakfast and fresh produce from our gardens (for a fee). We are a working farm and registered as two Non-Profits. One an animal rescue, primarily working with cats. At any given day we have 20-30 cats roaming around the farm. All are under the care of our vet, vaccinated, spayed or neutered and treated for fleas and ticks. All important because they will want to interact with you. Some will want to sleep with you. Our 100 plus flock of poultry, comprised of chickens, ducks, geese and turkeys, free range during the day, so leave the Prada's at home. If you are staying at Sam's Place, your closest neighbors will Penelope and Petunia, our two female sister pigs. The prevailing winds are down from your site, but you may hear them squabble. Our herd of Nigerian Dwarf goats will love your attention and treats we can provide. Arriving in March is Jack, a miniature donkey...we are very excited! Please try to check-in by 8pm. Exceptions can be made. There are locally mandated quiet hours (10-7 Sun through Thur, and 11-7 Fri and Sat). Hanging out by a fire and chatting is fine.

Still owned by the same family, but now occupied by the grandson and wife. Learn more about this land: Park your RV under our large oak and pine trees, or in the cleared grass field. Out quaint little spot is located next to an I-196 overpass. Sites are at least 200 feet from the road, out of site from most neighbors. A paved walking and biking trail is just a three minute walk from your camp site. The state park is 1 mile away and a small convenience store is located between the two. Public beaches on lake Michigan are only 5 miles away.

A great place for a quiet getaway. Peaceful and private, these spots are a short walk to the lakefront that includes lots of boats, floats, and rafts. Had a great time without ever leaving the property.

Nice place for the family. There’s a large lake/pond with water toys and a swimming pool and jungle gym for the kids plus a ping pong table, fuze ball, and pool table. There’s shade where the RV’s park and picnic tables and firepit The management staff is very helpful and friendly.

1 night at Tincan Camp

Words can’t explain how much I’ve enjoyed my time on Jim’s property. It’s hard to travel for work as a young man but I found my time off from work was extremely enjoyable on Jim’s property. I spent a lot of my evenings down by the lake, extremely calm and beautiful with lots of kayaks and other fun water gadgets free for my use. Jim was hospitable like no other as well, whether it’s a friendly chat or advice or him helping you with your camp setup. The property is beautiful and the privacy and quietness made my time here so relaxing. The amenities such as the roller slide, frisbee golf, and lake toys made the time very fun and exciting as well. Not enough can be said about Jim and how he runs his camp.

Weekend Trip to Black River Trails Campground

This was my first time using this app, and the campground said it was theirs, too. Upon arriving to Black River Trails Campground I was greeted by friendly people and found out that unfortunately my site had been double booked, and the campground was experiencing a power outage!! The owners put us in a spot that was kind of make-shift, which was fine for us because we had plans in town seeing family that weekend so I knew we wouldn’t be there for the “full camping experience”. The owners brought us over a generator and tended to it, to make sure we could keep on like normal and have our fridge up and running to keep our groceries all cold. The only thing I would have changed about it is, I wish we had a fire pit and a picnic table- we didn’t get to have a fire until Saturday night because our family came to stay at a cabin on the second night, they had a fire pit, however, it was an adorable little cabin, and everything you need if you don’t want to bring a tent. There was quite a bit of poison ivy and sumac around which was only hard to keep my toddler out of, but older kids would be fine. The bathrooms were great and the showers were a bit confusing at first (hot and cold were reversed) but that’s an easy fix once you realize it! Nice and spacious for changing after showering too. The fishing was great and everyone joined in! I think that this situation can be a learning experience- and we would still definitely camp here again.

Weekend Trip to Backwoods Browns

So nice to guarantee the place to ourselves as they don't double book. Wide open sky for stars and super close to town for easy breakfast next morning. Will stay there again for sure.
