30 years ago this was a pay lake it has been shut down for years. I got it a few years ago for a family getaway. So there is some really nice fish in the lakes. This ecological art project is recruiting visitors to camp on scenic prairies, on woodland rim sites, or at delicate campsites located along a system of woodland trails. As of 2026, Beardsnest provides a glimpse into the 5th year of succession, which is characterized by spacious views of a gently rolling young prairie that is flanked by the rocky and steep slopes of a mature forest.
Pet friendly and a good fit for self-sufficient types that prefer quiet camping over dense layouts, but still want to get into to the park quickly (~6.2 miles to Visitors Center) or travel into Cave City (3 mi) for a greater variety of food, drink, and other cave experiences. Expand from campsites into a sketch-work of prairie and woodland trails featuring characteristic karst elements of topography.
Visitor support allow us to plant trees (~530 seedlings as of March 2026), establish native grasses and flowers, restore wetlands, create trails, and remove invasive species.
In our opinion, the essential Mammoth Cave NP experience should have 3 basic layers: 1) the underworld (cave tours), 2) upper world (hiking), and critically, the flow of water that connects the two (Green River). Mammoth Cave is unique in the way that a study of the underworld will repeatedly draw the mind into a creative space where we imagine what is beneath the surface and how these worlds are linked, while above ground hiking on land or kayaking on the rich and biodiverse Green River. There is more here than can be digested in a lifetime of observation, but examining in orbits of the 3 layers will provide a foundation of intuition and understanding.
Floating the Green River is like leaving developed reality and dropping into pure nature. We offer kayak trips and guided tours that leave from camp, tailored to your schedule.

Access requires crossing a rough dirt gulley that may be muddy, rutted, uneven, or washed out depending on weather. 4WD is STRONGLY RECOMMENDED, especially after rain. You will be responsible for removing/towing a vehicle if it gets stuck.
Review ALL listing photos before booking. The entrance and gulley are shown. You are responsible for determining whether your vehicle can safely access the property.
GPS: 250 Rosser Road, Cub Run, KY (gets you close, not the exact location). If you reach the house, you've gone too far. Entrance is the angled dirt road on the right before the road ends.

The space
You will have access to the entire space. You will experience lots of wildlife during your stay. Feel free to grill out and build a fire. The property is on a dead-end road, has a huge yard, and tons of parking. There is also a pond on sight if you like to fish. There are 2 back patios and a balcony off of the master upstairs.
The house easily sleeps 10. Please refer to the details in the listing as to bed sizes, etc…12 guests can make it work with the air mattress.
I am currently painting the inside of the house room by room, so you may see some painter's tape in 1 said room. Thank you for overlooking this as it’s an ongoing DIY project.

Our stay at Beardsnest was fabulous. Kevin was a great host, even going out of his way to help close a window on our mini camper while we were out and it started to rain! His three dogs are friendly as well. With the woods right next to our site, we were serenaded by a variety of birds each morning. Wonderful!

Van and Chuck host a cluster of great camp sites on a beautiful piece of land. Our site was right on the lake and in a nice clear open area. We were situated within walking distance of two other camp sites, which we explored since we were told we would be the only group staying their over the weekend. Van and Chuck were incredibly hospitable and welcoming, and made sure to make themselves available if we needed anything. We will definitely have to plan a second trip out to their property soon!

Our site was in a great location; just outside of the prairie and into the tree line. The biodiversity in the area is incredible after all of the effort put into the land, and there are several hiking trails to enjoy it as well! Kevin is very friendly and knowledgeable about the surrounding area. He recommended some nice places to visit. The site is also a very short drive to Mammoth Cave, which was nice! Overall a great stay!

The bathhouse was amazing! Such a luxury camping amenity.

Wow, what a beautiful park! Amenities galore and fun by the minute. I will say I was quite disappointed in the site they put us in though. Apparently the site had flooded with recent rains and it was a total mud pit all around our pad which had standing muddy water all over it. We were only there for one night but needed to flush tanks etc so it was quite a mess with all the mud. I would not want to stay on site D1 again because of the potential for flooding but this park overall is fantastic.

Yes please let visitors know the road at tar springs are narrow, so they can slow down.

We loved camping here in our RV. It was so quiet and with minimal light pollution, we could see so many stars! The host was friendly and met us as we arrived and showed us where to park. We had freedom to park anywhere on the lot, but parked close to the electricity. We would definitely recommend this stop and would visit again if we are in the Mammoth Cave area again.

Beardsnest was our first stop on our trip out west and ideal for our 1-night stay to visit Mammouth Cave. We got in just before dusk, parked, setup a camp fire and then slept before heading out early the next day.
It’s a simple, but nice setup and was perfect for our short stay to kick off our trip. Kevin was very friendly & helpful, firewood was dry and we really enjoyed the fire pit. We had a 30ft RV with 2 adults / 4 kids.

Stayed at Kevin’s property for a two night family camping trip on June 2nd and 3rd. We stayed at the back country rim camp site. It was beautiful! A meadow spot full of milkweed, butterfly weed, thistle and other various meadow plants. The milkweed had the air smelling amazing! Also: there were lots of fireflies! We absolutely love the concept behind his Hipcamp property.
Kevin came out to greet us as soon as we arrived. He’s very friendly. His dogs are friendly and came to visit us a few times. He respected our privacy but was always available via messaging on Hipcamp. Be warned: there’s lots of ticks. That’s not Kevin’s fault—those MFers are taking over the world! Bring plenty of bugspray and you’ll be fine—no one in my family was bitten. You should definitely stay here! ❤️
