This creek property was probably used by the Creek and then the Cherokee as a campsite because of the abundant water and wild life. Later is was farm land and in the 1920's had approximately fifty mules working the land. The Old barn and blacksmith shop are still here. In 1977 the government planned to put a four lane toll road through here but was stopped by the oil embargo which caused the right of way to be auctioned. We were able to buy 200 acres for a small amount of money and have been raising cattle and camping on it every since that time. As a Scout Master I have been using this site for camping for the past 15 years. Time to let others enjoy. Learn more about this land: Pitch your tent or hammock in a grove of hardwood trees in a nice meadow on the banks of Lake Creek with old timey swimming hole. It is about 8 feet deep in center going to about 4' at sides and 20 feet long. Big stone grill is provided as well as large fire pit. Kindling and firewood is provided. ten minute walk to the main house for potable water and other needs. 37 acre farm with hills and a wide variety of wildlife and plants to inspect. Camp is in rural area couple hundred yards off county road but secluded. Plenty of deer, turkey, geese, wild ducks, beaver and other wild life in the area. You will need to provide your own transportation to and from the island, either using your own boat or by renting a kayak/SUP from a local outfitter. We recommend renting kayaks from L2 Outdoors who launches from Coolidge Park. Maclellan Island’s earliest inhabitants were Indigenous People whose island community was likely an extension or suburb of Citico, a nearby village. Farmed in the 1800’s and early 1900’s, the island was plowed for many years and largely free of the trees which shade it today. Floods have covered the island from time to time and drove away numerous early settlers including one early farmer, Abel Kesterson, who survived rising waters in 1867 only by holding onto the horns of his cow as they swam to safety. The island eventually passed through the hands of several prominent companies as well as a number of more rambunctious inhabitants. Finally in 1954 Maclellan Island was donated to the Chattanooga Audubon Society by Robert J. Maclellan for preservation as a wildlife refuge. If you'll be arriving by a motorized boat, you will need to use a public boat ramp. The closest one is at the Tennessee River Park. Coolidge Park has a kayak/canoe/SUP launch and you can park cars in their parking lot overnight for a fee.

For site number 3 (the one my wife and I stayed at) it was an easy back in to get our 45 toy hauler into the site. Sites 1 and 2 may have presented a challenge for our size rig but they are very spacious. All of the sites that is. Entry and exit of the park was easy and straight forward. We loved the close proximity to family in the area especially for our Thanksgiving stay. There was one limb that was touching the back corner of our roof and with a simple call to William, the issue was resolved quickly with a quick cut from his pole saw. We definitely plan to return to Deer Valley RV in the future. Thank you William!

We had a wonderful time at Dark Hollow. The view from “The Ledge” was amazing, and the site arrangement was perfect. Hearing the lions & tigers at night was a bonus. We will definitely be back!

The hiking trails off of the site were just challenging enough to make it exciting, but not impossible for people with little experience. I’d highly recommend the zoo near the site. We were at the bobcat tent site and could hear the lions and hyenas at night from our campfire. Highly recommend!

LOVED this campsite! As soon as we showed up we added another night lol We have been on the road for about 2 weeks and it was one of my favorite stops. We’re traveling in a 23ft converted school bus and had zero problems finding the property and picking a spot. The property is beautiful and comes with some great amenities including water fill up :) would for sure stay again!

It was perfect for my traveling needs. I spent majority of my time during the day hiking in GA/TN so it’s perfect to return to in the late afternoon to relax. The Bath House was very clean and the dogs that roam the property are very friendly. The trains were a bit loud and busy during the night, but it is manageable to sleep through if you’re good at tuning it out. Overall, it’s great for a place to set up camp for the night and wake up early to continue a drive or to hit the trails.

This space was absolutely perfect for hosting my friends and I for tent camping! The ability to put food in their fridge was big help. The site is close to beautiful waterfall hiking trails (less than 10 minutes away from trailheads) so we didn't have to go far to enjoy nature. The port-a-potty/shower facilities are nothing fancy but available and for a night, were perfectly sufficient. Would recommend and utilize again!
