The meadow we occupy was once the farmers property that I grew up next to at my parents farm house. When he wanted to sell his property he offered it to us for purchase at a fair price if we would not develop more than we needed to live here. We maintained the meadow adjacent to our property and have kept it as an agricultural site. We have had our son develop an edible forest garden and a unique diversified small orchard so we can eat and share healthy organic fruits and vegetables while helping our environment and wildlife and educating others to do the same. It is expensive to live in Newtown but we love our property. We want to teach others to grow food from their land while helping to support us keeping our adjacent property agricultural and undeveloped. You will be the only ones at Fernwood, or Fernwood 2 unless we happen to be up working on the land.  No matter where you set up you'll have your own private fire pit, and level ground for your tent(s).  Come and enjoy a quiet retreat, or use Fernwood as a base for many outdoor activities-biking, fishing, hiking-all nearby.  Natchaug Forest offers great trout fishing.  Goodwin State Forest is less than 3 miles away by car where you can put in a canoe on Pine Lake, amble through the wildflower and pollinator gardens, or enjoy the Education Center and Museum. From Goodwin, you can access the Air Line State Park Bike/Hiking Path.  Hampton also has a general store that has simple food, frozen dinners that Kara will heat up for you, gifts, and awesome Ice Cream Sodas! Pachaug is Connecticut’s largest state forest, clocking in at twodozen acres. Oh wait, excuse us, two-dozen-thousand acres! That’s 24,000 for the non-bakers here. Long story short, it’s going to take a loooong time to explore this whole place. Pachaug is derived from the Indian term meaning bend or turn in the river. Unsurprisingly, the Pachaug River is one twisty son-of-a…headwater, probably. Anyways, this makes for excellent boating and the fish seem to like it too, if you catch our drift. And why wouldn’t they? This place is something else.

Natchaug State Forest is the scene of a wonderful fairytale. Once upon a time, there were two rivers that couldn’t stand to be apart. Finally, when it seemed like things would never change, they joined together in a beautiful forest in Connecticut and flowed happily ever after. At least that’s what we like to think. In Natchaug Forest is where the Bigelow and Still Rivers join to form the Natchaug River, and the scenery here really isn’t far off from something in a fairytale. It’s common to see people galloping through the woods on horseback and there are even a few old stone structures. So let your imagination run wild and have yourself an adventure.

My dog and I had a great 2-night stay at Fernwood! There was plenty of space on level ground, along with ample firewood and non-potable water for washing/rinsing, etc. We enjoyed hiking the trails nearby to Governors Island and visiting the Hampton General store during our stay! Make sure to give Buddy the dog some pats and enjoy some homemade treats from there as well! Alan is a great and friendly host and I plan to visit again soon!

Me, my fiancé and our dogs absolutely loved this place! Nancy and Bert were the best hosts! You could tell they truly love doing this and thought of every little detail you would need while being there! The property was perfect for the dogs to explore while we sat by the fire and relaxed, and they have such a nice trail to explore on, even a cute little fairy garden on it! We already can’t wait to come back!

Weekend Trip to Mickelberry Forest Gardens

Amy’s property is the best HipCamp experience I’ve had yet! I stayed at the meadows edge site, which overlooks the most beautiful meadow that lights up with fireflies in the evening. The campsite has a nice fire pit, a grill, chairs and other supplies ready to go. Amy, her husband, and their little dog Sophia were all incredibly welcoming to me and my little dog. Amy even gave me some great tips when I asked about activities in the area. One more bonus is that driving from Brooklyn to CT is far easier (and more beautiful) than driving upstate, or to Jersey. Hope I can stay here again soon.

We couldn’t have found a more perfect spot for our multiple trips into New Haven or to the other places we visit from this location. The drive was easy, the spot was level and it was quiet and peaceful. It was tight. We had to back our 31’ fifth wheel out of the 2nd entrance because the first entrance was too tight, but we knew that from everyone else’s comments.

We came on 2 wheels and site 5 was perfect. It’s right past site 6 but still have full privacy to change and set up. Had no issues, the pine needle forest ground was perfect for sleeping and bare foot relaxation. Nice flat spots. Saw a small bear down the road from the campsite on our way out. What a magical stay.

We went camping in a tent. It was really great and relaxing. Pretty secluded. You could hear some road noise. We did hear coyotes in the middle of the night which was exciting. There were lots of ticks so bring your spray. If you wanna get away where you can relax and not be bothered by a single soul this is the place to come!

Great little spot to get away for a couple nights. Spigot for water & porta potty were nice additions. Some car noise from the road but nothing too distracting. Would love to go back when the amphitheater has music.
