Base Camp Family Campground is owned and operated by the Baker Family. Josh Baker first lived in Southern Colorado in the early 90's as a child, but his family moved away after a short time. His desire to move back here as an adult prompted him to start bringing his own family to Colorado for vacations. They purchased land in the valley in 2014 and moved to Colorado in 2020. They are using all they've learned from years of RV adventures, to continue the park's mission of providing a clean, affordable, spacious, well-run camping facility, and to be a centrally located "base camp" and hub of information for everything this unique area has to offer.
You'll be camping in the shadows of 14,000 ft. mountain peaks, in the largest high-desert alpine valley in the world, that is sprinkled with free-flowing artesian wells, hot springs and wet lands. Daily summer temperatures average 65 degrees, and it will get down into the 50's at night. That's perfect camping weather!
For native American tribes, including the Utes, Apache, Navajos, and others, this valley is considered the source of life, a place where humans and spirit enter and leave this world. The valley was considered so sacred, that no war would be waged here.

As if all of the mountains, deserts, hot springs, and sacred ground weren't enough, The San Luis Valley is also known as a UFO hot spot! UFO sightings have been reported as far back as the 1600's.

The Rabbit Hole Ranch offers beautiful night skies with little to no light pollution and unobstructed views of the majestic Blanca Massif. The Great Sand Dunes and Zapata Falls is just a (gorgeous) 35 minute drive.
Camping here at the Rabbit Hole Ranch is primitive and dispersed (no numbered sites) and there 30 acres available for you to use. Just follow the signs to the designated area and pick out a spot you like.
Some spots have fire rings, some don’t. We are working on getting more, but in the meantime you’re welcome to bring your own. Or feel free to dig out a little hole. It works great and is easy to extinguish when you fill it back in and bury it. Please do not bury any trash.
Typically, you will experience a rare kind of solitude and silence that feels…. other-worldly, with incredible sunrises and sunsets filling the enormous skies.
On holidays, however, expect it to be busy.
Our only dog, Boudicca, is a working dog and she is more than happy to help keep you and your pets safe. Please help make her job easier by not leaving any food or trash in or around tents. Her name is Boudicca (BOO duh kuh) and she lost her two besties last year, so she needs extra love and treats!
Please keep your pets on leash or under control until you’re comfortably certain they get along with our dog. And please report any issues promptly.
Quiet time begins at 10:00 pm.
Note: Holidays still offer the excellent location and spectacular views, but are likely to be less quiet and far more busy. We typically do not strictly enforce quiet time during holidays.

Hi! We are a bright family in a small community, developing our 42 acres in Crestone, Colorado. The land backs up to the north side of the Great Sand Dunes National Park. Our property features a host of cottonwood trees, a seasonal creek, a creative outdoor bath house with hot running water, claw foot bath tub and a 1.5 acre mini farm in progress. You’ll usually catch us in some project. We host folks in a bell tent with a cozy king bed. Or you can choose the Bring Your Own option for your tent or vehicle camping location. There is no shore power for vans/rvs or wifi near the camp sites. We don’t have too many neighbors, and it is home to abundant wildlife including a Great Horned Owl, Coyote packs, Elk, Deer, Woodpeckers, Hummingbirds, Bobcats, Bats and Frogs, and the neighbors farm animals.
Crestone is a beautiful, remote, high desert wilderness surrounded by classic Colorado (almost) 14-ners with high alpine lakes, rivers, hot springs, rock climbing, mountain biking, and the Great Sand Dunes National Park. Crestone is also known for its 30 diverse spiritual centers, incredible star gazing as a official dark sky community, alien sightings, and it's beautiful, unique housing community that focuses on building with reclaimed and natural building methods. Our home, like many of the homes here, is creatively made from recycled materials, using two train cars for the body of the house. The property also hosts a 1200 square foot Dojo, built by the previous owner, a Qi Gong master lineage carrier. We are completely off grid, using solar power, wood heat and some propane when needed. We aren't on sewer or septic, so this is an opportunity for the understanding of composting toilet and humanure systems.
Our goals on the property are to enhance our lives, and those in our community, with everything we do here. Our home and community provides an opportunity to learn about natural living and building methods, composting, the beauty and challenge of living off grid, and ample opportunities to be in nature. We host seasonal events that have roots in our ancient humanity. It is an opportunity to experience the deep quiet of the community of nature, while still having modern cleanliness and coziness.

Sun drenched rustic cabin on a working cattle ranch in the San Luis Valley.
During the months of March, April and May cattle are in the meadows in the front of the cabin. With no wifi, this is a place to disconnect and be with nature.
Located just west of the Rio Grande, the Crestone mountain range and Mt. Blanca are to the north, and the Sangre De Cristo mountains are to the east.

This was a good place to pull over and go to sleep- it does have a beautiful view of the Mtns and city skyline- limited amenities- also be prepared for windy conditions (it was loud in the tent)- I am sure it is seasonal but have plenty of covers as well 😂

Weekend Trip to Ascension Acres
My partner and I loved our stay at the mirror dome! Our host was so welcoming and a lovely person.
There’s a beautiful trail that goes back to a clearing in the forest. Next time I’d love to setup a picnic and blankets out on the clearing.
The valley, the view of the mountains, the peaceful drive up, the pyramid house and the incredible stars at night. We will definitely be coming back here for another trip.

Weekend Trip to Great Sand Dunes Desert Escape
A terrific quiet location with some thoughtful amenities. Easy to find and navigate once I realized HipCamp was trying to drop me off about 2 miles further south. Had a nice refreshing breeze, not the big wind some other reviews mentioned, and beautiful skies, active coyotes and magpies and jays, and tons of fruiting piñons. Having a jug of water available was a thoughtful touch! A great little slice of the SLV. Will return!

Weekend Trip to Base Camp Family Campground
My friend and I stayed at the dry lodge and had such a blast! The views were immaculate, bathrooms/showers were clean, and there were so many fun things to do around the town.
On top of that, the hosts were SO helpful and sweet! We had forgotten some items and they were extremely thoughtful and helpful with getting us the supplies.
10/10- will be back😊

Weekend Trip to Infinite Empire Farm
This was the perfect place to stay a night on our drive from Texas. Just on the edge of town, this camp had beautiful scenery, but was only 5 minutes from Main St. The tent was clean and comfortable, I'm really glad we stayed here instead of a hotel.

1 night at Ascension Acres
My daughter and I loved it! It was a magical little dome! We went to enjoy the perseid meteors. And we were able to enjoy stargazing both outside and even inside the dome as well!
They had so many nice touches inside as well 💖 we loved all the mushroom decorations 😍
And the crystal decoration outside.
We are definitely going to be going back someday!
We felt at peace and a sense of home!

Stunning views of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains paired with a remarkably comfortable bed made for a top-tier camping experience. Getting to soak in the clawfoot tub at the outdoor bathhouse was a welcomed treat after a long day of climbing. If you're looking for a peaceful spot near the portal, Lydia’s place fits the bill. We had a great night at the Nomad Ranch! Angela’s place is perfect - she was so communicative and helpful with our last minute booking. The cabin is in a great location and you can’t beat the views. Was super clean upon arrival and we so appreciated the cold water Angela left out for us. We also loved the huge open windows and saw so many stars! Would definitely stay again.

2 nights at Ascension Acres
As a first-time Hipcamp stay, the Mirror Dome was such a unique and perfect way to start our experience. Austin’s property is in a remote area of an already remote part of Colorado, Aguilar, and if you’re looking for beautiful levels of quiet and a truly unique stay, then this is the place. The dome is well equipped for comfortable lounging around, and there are ample blankets, pillows and small lights for additional comfort. Austin is a truly wonderful host, and it’s important to note that the lower level of the home is also available basically during daytime hours for access to a full bath, small living area and a hot tub on the deck - that last part is key if you end up hiking around the Spanish Peaks and want a way to unravel yourself at the end of the day. A small note of interest is if you tend to be cold at night in the Colorado elevation, just a light layer of clothing to sleep in seemed more than ample for us. We would gladly stay again!

The location was remote and directions made it easy to find. Serene, quiet, quiet, quiet. Outdoor sink/kitchen and picnic table were handy for clean up/bfast. Toilets were clean and shower set up cool but we didn't need to use. Tent was larger than expected, firm bed was cozy w fluffy blankets and string lights were soothing. We will definitely return and recommend. Thank you for helping reset the Cells, Namaste, Amituofo, thank you🙏🏽

I loved staying at Lydia’s tent! She was super hospitable and really welcoming. The tent was beautiful and so unique, and the view was incredible, especially at sunset. Beautiful drive to the location, address provided took me right to the site, and I slept wonderfully on the massive and comfy bed provided— it was super cozy! The bathroom and shower were also a cool experience on their own. They were clean, water was hot, pressure was great, and they were super cute and unique.

The time house on Daryl and Cindy’s land was a perfect little home away from home! They were so warm and inviting, and made us feel very welcome (and wanted)! We loved feeling like we were out in the middle of nowhere but still having a comfortable place to call home base. We would love to come back here again.

The Medicine Tent was just what I needed to get away and unwind in the beautiful and mystical San Luis Valley. The tent and bathhouses were so comfortable and clean, and made relaxing in the cool mountain breeze and under the stars all the more simple. Lydia was responsive and helpful, and gave me some great recommendations for hikes and things to do in the area. I would absolutely recommend these camping and glamping spots to anyone who wants a great home base to explore the Sangre De Cristo Range, Crestone’s unique spiritual communities, Great Sand Dune’s National Park, or just to star gaze under the darkest skies you’ll find anywhere.
