Base Camp Family Campground is owned and operated by the Baker Family. Josh Baker first lived in Southern Colorado in the early 90's as a child, but his family moved away after a short time. His desire to move back here as an adult prompted him to start bringing his own family to Colorado for vacations. They purchased land in the valley in 2014 and moved to Colorado in 2020. They are using all they've learned from years of RV adventures, to continue the park's mission of providing a clean, affordable, spacious, well-run camping facility, and to be a centrally located "base camp" and hub of information for everything this unique area has to offer.
You'll be camping in the shadows of 14,000 ft. mountain peaks, in the largest high-desert alpine valley in the world, that is sprinkled with free-flowing artesian wells, hot springs and wet lands. Daily summer temperatures average 65 degrees, and it will get down into the 50's at night. That's perfect camping weather!
For native American tribes, including the Utes, Apache, Navajos, and others, this valley is considered the source of life, a place where humans and spirit enter and leave this world. The valley was considered so sacred, that no war would be waged here.

As if all of the mountains, deserts, hot springs, and sacred ground weren't enough, The San Luis Valley is also known as a UFO hot spot! UFO sightings have been reported as far back as the 1600's.

The Great Sand Dunes National Park - the tallest and most amazing sand dunes in North America - is visible from almost everywhere on our property. Look to the south to see this alternate view. Plan to make a day-trip to the Dunes! Don't forget about the Ziggurat (it's visible from our deck too).

Base Camp Family Campground is owned and operated by the Baker Family. Josh Baker first lived in Southern Colorado in the early 90's as a child, but his family moved away after a short time. His desire to move back here as an adult prompted him to start bringing his own family to Colorado for vacations. They purchased land in the valley in 2014 and moved to Colorado in 2020. They are using all they've learned from years of RV adventures, to continue the park's mission of providing a clean, affordable, spacious, well-run camping facility, and to be a centrally located "base camp" and hub of information for everything this unique area has to offer.
You'll be camping in the shadows of 14,000 ft. mountain peaks, in the largest high-desert alpine valley in the world, that is sprinkled with free-flowing artesian wells, hot springs and wet lands. Daily summer temperatures average 65 degrees, and it will get down into the 50's at night. That's perfect camping weather!
For native American tribes, including the Utes, Apache, Navajos, and others, this valley is considered the source of life, a place where humans and spirit enter and leave this world. The valley was considered so sacred, that no war would be waged here.

As if all of the mountains, deserts, hot springs, and sacred ground weren't enough, The San Luis Valley is also known as a UFO hot spot! UFO sightings have been reported as far back as the 1600's.

Loved our weekend getaway at The Louie Lodge! Was the perfect little house to enjoy being off the grid! The deck had gorgeous views of the mountains for morning coffee and yoga. Our dogs loved running around the property. 10/10 trip.

My family of 4 + a dog loved our stay! It was a bit squishy as you would expect fitting a family of 4+ in a tiny home...but it was cozy! Comfortable beds all around and the means for making coffee. :) But the absolute best part was the DECK! Gorgeous views. Great birding! Great place to drink said coffee. This was a perfect stay for us on a trip to the Great Sand Dunes. Also, excellent communication with the host.

We loved how much detail and care was put into this tiny home! It had everything we needed (except for hot water) to have a restful stay near the sand dunes! The property is very secluded so the star viewing at night was optimal! Would definitely stay here again.

Weekend Trip to Moore Chaparral
What a wonderful place! Daryl and Cindy greeted us when we arrived and were so sweet. The place was perfect for our overnight. A super comfortable bed, snacks and treats if we wanted them, and many amenities to keep us cozy during our stay. When we woke up in the morning, we enjoyed coffee under the tree-zebo. The propriety the stunning and the hosts went above and beyond. Definitely recommend! We’ll be back!

For parents of toddlers:
Pros: Gorgeous views, comfy beds, was able to fit our pack & play in the house with the SlumberPod cover over it. Full kitchen and fridge made it easy to prep and store food. 30 minutes from the Sand Dunes where our 1.5 year old had an BLAST playing in the sand and the creek.
Cons: lots of things for kiddos to get into in the house (not baby proof) so need to be extra vigilant. No railings on the deck or stairs, and the outdoor area is almost always in full sun so bring lots of sunscreen for your littles. But our host graciously and thoughtfully warned us about all these things so we tried to come prepared!!

4 nights at Camp Catori
Catori’s cabin was the best experience for our getaway. The location is ideal and the scenery is gorgeous. We felt like we had the entire mountain to ourselves. The cabin was extremely comfortable and had plenty of convenient features that made it feel like we could stay forever. One of our favorite features was the large porch with comfortable furniture, we spent hours each day just taking in the sunshine and views. Overall, Catori’s property was exactly what we needed and we can’t wait for another opportunity to stay again soon as we can. Highly recommend!
