Situated in the Tehachapi Mountains, not far from Bakersfield, Tehachapi is the gateway to Tomo-Kahni State Historic Park, which preserves the remains of a Kawaiisu (Nuwa) village. The park is only accessible by guided tours, which take place on weekends during the spring and fall. For campers stopping through on a roadtrip, there are quite a few RV parks in and around Tehachapi, both along Highway 58 and in the surrounding mountains. Many ranches south of town serve as RV-friendly Hipcamps, plus tons of public RV campgrounds can be found in the nearby Sequoia National Forest and further north in Sequoia National Park—many accommodate smaller and mid-sized RVs, though some are only open seasonally. The Ranch has many varied sites to explore from oak woodlands to pine covered woods. The ownership of the land has been held since 1883 by the Summit Lime Company and was until the 1930's the site of several lime quarries one of which was used to supply material for the Owens valley to Los Angeles aquaduct. Current utilization is for recreation, private hunting club, timber production, and cattle grazing. The campground was built in 1967 to provide a location for church, non-profit, and youth groups to enjoy a private, and safe location for outdoor recreation activities. The Chumash called the peak of Mount Piños the center of the universe, or center of the world depending on the translation. This campground is at the southeast base of this mountain. The San Andreas fault is just about 8 miles away, and many other faults meet nearby. The mountains here are full of geological signs of the Forces that ripped away Santa Barbara from the North American plate as it was flipped upside down. This is the entrance to the Enchanted Forest. Learn more about this land: Lockwood Valley is so close to Los Angeles and other urban areas, but feels 1000 miles away. Our neighborhood is a gem within Lockwood Valley. The community has less than 20 residences so it is very rural, but neighborly. There are horses nearby, you will hear some roosters in the distance, and if you are lucky, you may hear the African lions or wolves from the next canyon over where there is a (fully contained) wildlife sanctuary called Steve Martins Working Wildlife (not the funny guy). Great secluded spot for a fully contained RV. Easy entrance from a good dirt road. The actual property of the site is 1/8 of an acre and is surrounded by forest and fields. A picnic table is nestled in a grove of trees next to a steel fire pit ring. Bring your hammock to relax under big shady piñon pines. The site is about 200 yards from the entrance to the Los Padres National Forest with great hiking, mountain biking, birdwatching, hunting, etc. There is currently no privacy barrier between the campsite and the dirt road, but the traffic is extremely minimal. There are two 12’x24’ horse corrals on the property. This area is ideal for horseback trail riding and the campsite location makes for the perfect base camp. This is a superb stargazing spot, far from the city lights. Many amateur astronomers come to this area for the dark skies. At a mile high, nights can be very cold, and in the winter it is possible to get up to a couple feet of snow. Weather conditions such as heavy rain or snow can make the roads and campsite impassable at times so cancellations are possible in this case (this happens a lot less than we would like, of course, because we need the precipitation!).

Our 8 year old and 6 year old LOVED feeding the llamas and alpacas. In fact, it was one of their highlights of their Spring Break. For campers (we were in our van), there is a hammock, picnic table, fire put and grill.

Weekend Trip to A Unique Mountain Retreat

Beautiful land! There’s a nice trail (~30 minute walk) around the property with views in all directions. Our dog especially enjoyed the walk. The grounds, common spaces and toilets were very clean. I appreciated that the sink had running water (hot and cold). The stars were beautiful at night as there’s no light pollution around. What a comfortable stop on our long long roadtrip.

This is a very cool piece of property. The location itself is close to town for easy ice runs, but you feel like you’re away from everything , but still have a bar or two on the cell. The sites are each unique and hold their own identity and the kitchen is well stocked, just bring food. The outdoor shower is a MUST try, perfect for rinsing off after a hike. John was very easy to work with and made me feel welcome. I will definitely be back.

John was quick to respond to questions about the fire ban and using firepits prior to the booking. He was very helpful with suggestions and providing driving instructions. When I got to the campsite, John was generous with his time explaining the unique property and kind enough to offer a different site if the one I booked was not to my liking (Campsite #1 was perfect with lots of space, shade and close to restrooms/showers!). It was so thoughtful of him to check in on me in the evening and offer a discount on the firepit (as it was getting chilly) :) All facilities were clean, well built and maintained. Well maintained hiking trail around the property, great way to take in the views! Friendly neighbors, good coffee and dining spots around town, museums and wineries - all within a short driving distance (~20 mins) of the property. Highly recommend!!

Great place. Beautiful, peaceful place to rest. Lou gave such great insight into these beautiful birds. Highly recommend if you’re traveling to Antelope Valley. 😎
