Our offerings include fresh air and sunshine, amazing night sky, endless views, and plenty of space and privacy to enjoy your moments in nature. You'll find our amenities and activities puposefully sparse here. Upon booking, there are about 5 miles of dirt road on the property that you are welcome to explore on foot or by bicycle.
Rustic is the theme here. There is no shower, no wifi, and no electricity available, but you will enjoy your own private spigot and the cellular service is acceptable.
For any sites located south of Ballinger Wash, your vehicle length is limited to 22' and no more than 4' overhang from the rear axle, so you don't get stuck in the crossing and block access for others. Towing services are 1-3 hours away.
Our Songdog Camps are sparsely scattered atop a 200 foot mesa that looks west over a valley offering stunning desert sunsets and amazing stargazing. These UPPER SITES are NOT OHV friendly, but any of our canyon bottom sites are a great base for your riding adventures up in Ballinger Canyon OHV. We'll be happy to recommend a site for you. **Forest Service law enforcement is actively ticketing unplated OHV on Ballinger Canyon Road. Be sure to know and abide by the laws.**

1948- On January 1, 1948 a wildcatter named George Hadley, who had been oil prospecting in the valley for 10 years, made the first oil strike in the Cuyama Valley. Richfield Oil Company soon moved in and extracted nearly 300 million barrels of oil in just a few short years. To accommodate an exploding workforce in the early 1950s, the company built the town of New Cuyama, its infrastructure, public buildings, the Cuyama airstrip (L88) and all the industrial structures that are now home to Blue Sky. Richfield Oil Company, later merging with Atlantic Oil Company forming the Atlantic Richfield Oil Company (ARCO), created high-paying jobs, a safe and prosperous community, and developed schools, churches, and recreational areas for the employee-residents.1973- With dwindling production in the area and new discoveries in Alaska, Atlantic-Richfield Oil Company put the town of New Cuyama and its associated infrastructure up for sale. Word of an entire town for sale made its way to entrepreneur, Russell O’Quinn of the Foundation for Airborne Relief (FAR) and Mildred Dotson, a wealthy widow from Tulsa, Oklahoma. The two worked together to acquire the townsite and adjacent land. O’Quinn, an aviator, inventor, and test pilot, aspired to use the New Cuyama airstrip and facilities as a base for humanitarian relief and a non-profit trade school. Though not fully realized, FAR’s primary vision included utilizing converted military aircraft to airlift food and medical supplies to developing countries and global disaster areas. Dotson had loftier goals. Her plans included an 18-hole fly-in golf course, expansion of the Buckhorn Restaurant and Motel, and a 40- to 50-acre lake for amphibious landing and water sports. 1986- Another visionary, Harry Kislevitz, inventor of the popular design tool Colorforms® and founder of Future City/Villages International, sought to develop the site as a “City of Friendship,” an all-electric village of 5,000 earthen homes. The dwellings were to be designed by Nader Khalili, an Iranian-born architect who specialized in earthen structures, worked with NASA on prototypes for lunar homes and received an award from the United Nations for his work towards the development of low cost, sustainable structures for human shelter in impoverished and disaster prone environments. One 628-sq-ft Khalili prototype remains on the property today ("the Cantina"). Khalili went on to form the California Institute for Earth Art and Architecture, Cal-Earth, in Hesperia, CA.1993- Recognizing the transformative potential of clean, solar power and the attractiveness of a rural destination, entrepreneur Mike Nolan worked to develop the Solar Skypark and Big Sky Guest Ranch with Santa Barbara Architect, Barry Berkus. The Sky Park included plans for sixty-five fly-in residences on one-acre lots powered completely from clean, solar energy. The Big Sky Guest Ranch was intended to function as a clubhouse for Skypark residents complete with an equestrian center, a small subsistence farm, pool and plenty of enriching recreational activities. 2012- At the end of 2011, the Zannon Family Foundation made a long-term investment in acquiring the New Cuyama Airport property with the vision of rehabilitating the site to be a low-cost resource for programs and organizations working to advance sustainable living practices and technologies. Plans began soon after towards developing a framework and organization to develop the space and coordinate with prospective programs and institutions. In 2014 Blue Sky Sustainable Living Center ("Blue Sky Center") received 501(c)(3) not-for-profit status, endeavoring to reclaim this property for the public good. Today, Blue Sky Center provides unduplicated services and technical assistance to support small businesses and entrepreneurs as well as the local food system, with core work focused on community research and advocacy led by Cuyamans. The Chumash called the peak of Mount Piños the center of the universe, or center of the world depending on the translation. This campground is at the southeast base of this mountain. The San Andreas fault is just about 8 miles away, and many other faults meet nearby. The mountains here are full of geological signs of the Forces that ripped away Santa Barbara from the North American plate as it was flipped upside down. This is the entrance to the Enchanted Forest.

Lockwood Valley is so close to Los Angeles and other urban areas, but feels 1000 miles away. Our neighborhood is a gem within Lockwood Valley. The community has less than 20 residences so it is very rural, but neighborly. There are horses nearby, you will hear some roosters in the distance, and if you are lucky, you may hear the African lions or wolves from the next canyon over where there is a (fully contained) wildlife sanctuary called Steve Martins Working Wildlife (not the funny guy).
Great secluded spot for a fully contained RV. Easy entrance from a good dirt road. The actual property of the site is 1/8 of an acre and is surrounded by forest and fields. A picnic table is nestled in a grove of trees next to a steel fire pit ring. Bring your hammock to relax under big shady piñon pines. The site is about 200 yards from the entrance to the Los Padres National Forest with great hiking, mountain biking, birdwatching, hunting, etc. There is currently no privacy barrier between the campsite and the dirt road, but the traffic is extremely minimal.
There are two 12’x24’ horse corrals on the property. This area is ideal for horseback trail riding and the campsite location makes for the perfect base camp.
This is a superb stargazing spot, far from the city lights. Many amateur astronomers come to this area for the dark skies. At a mile high, nights can be very cold, and in the winter it is possible to get up to a couple feet of snow. Weather conditions such as heavy rain or snow can make the roads and campsite impassable at times so cancellations are possible in this case (this happens a lot less than we would like, of course, because we need the precipitation!).

There are no services, no water, no trash pickup, no toilets, no EV charging, and no cell service. There is only beauty—and lots of it—so please plan carefully. High-clearance vehicles and experienced driving skills are recommended; an SUV or 4WD is ideal for this terrain.

Please do not break off branches from bushes for your fire, and never leave your campfire unattended. Ensure it is completely extinguished before leaving. Note that campfires are not allowed during Red Flag warnings or high-wind events.
This is a strictly PACK IT IN / PACK IT OUT site. Please take all trash and waste with you. If you are not self-contained, you can find vault toilets at Traver Ranch, Soda Lake Overlook, and the Visitor Center. Because there is no water or service here, you must arrive well-supplied. Be sure to download your reservation to your phone for proof of booking, as cell service is unreliable. Occasionally, you may find people picnicking at the site; please politely inform them of your reservation so they can move along.
We highly recommend exploring Painted Rock, Caliente Ridge, and the Soda Lake boardwalk during your stay. Keep an eye out for the elk—they are a majestic sight! Be sure to stop by the Visitor Center as well.

Rustic is the theme here. There is no shower, no wifi, and no electricity available, but you will enjoy your own private spigot and the cellular service is acceptable.
For any sites located south of Ballinger Wash, your vehicle length is limited to 22' and no more than 4' overhang from the rear axle, so you don't get stuck in the crossing and block access for others. Towing services are 1-3 hours away.
Our Songdog Camps are sparsely scattered atop a 200 foot mesa that looks west over a valley offering stunning desert sunsets and amazing stargazing. These UPPER SITES are NOT OHV friendly, but any of our canyon bottom sites are a great base for your riding adventures up in Ballinger Canyon OHV. We'll be happy to recommend a site for you. **Forest Service law enforcement is actively ticketing unplated OHV on Ballinger Canyon Road. Be sure to know and abide by the laws.**

1948- On January 1, 1948 a wildcatter named George Hadley, who had been oil prospecting in the valley for 10 years, made the first oil strike in the Cuyama Valley. Richfield Oil Company soon moved in and extracted nearly 300 million barrels of oil in just a few short years. To accommodate an exploding workforce in the early 1950s, the company built the town of New Cuyama, its infrastructure, public buildings, the Cuyama airstrip (L88) and all the industrial structures that are now home to Blue Sky. Richfield Oil Company, later merging with Atlantic Oil Company forming the Atlantic Richfield Oil Company (ARCO), created high-paying jobs, a safe and prosperous community, and developed schools, churches, and recreational areas for the employee-residents.1973- With dwindling production in the area and new discoveries in Alaska, Atlantic-Richfield Oil Company put the town of New Cuyama and its associated infrastructure up for sale. Word of an entire town for sale made its way to entrepreneur, Russell O’Quinn of the Foundation for Airborne Relief (FAR) and Mildred Dotson, a wealthy widow from Tulsa, Oklahoma. The two worked together to acquire the townsite and adjacent land. O’Quinn, an aviator, inventor, and test pilot, aspired to use the New Cuyama airstrip and facilities as a base for humanitarian relief and a non-profit trade school. Though not fully realized, FAR’s primary vision included utilizing converted military aircraft to airlift food and medical supplies to developing countries and global disaster areas. Dotson had loftier goals. Her plans included an 18-hole fly-in golf course, expansion of the Buckhorn Restaurant and Motel, and a 40- to 50-acre lake for amphibious landing and water sports. 1986- Another visionary, Harry Kislevitz, inventor of the popular design tool Colorforms® and founder of Future City/Villages International, sought to develop the site as a “City of Friendship,” an all-electric village of 5,000 earthen homes. The dwellings were to be designed by Nader Khalili, an Iranian-born architect who specialized in earthen structures, worked with NASA on prototypes for lunar homes and received an award from the United Nations for his work towards the development of low cost, sustainable structures for human shelter in impoverished and disaster prone environments. One 628-sq-ft Khalili prototype remains on the property today ("the Cantina"). Khalili went on to form the California Institute for Earth Art and Architecture, Cal-Earth, in Hesperia, CA.1993- Recognizing the transformative potential of clean, solar power and the attractiveness of a rural destination, entrepreneur Mike Nolan worked to develop the Solar Skypark and Big Sky Guest Ranch with Santa Barbara Architect, Barry Berkus. The Sky Park included plans for sixty-five fly-in residences on one-acre lots powered completely from clean, solar energy. The Big Sky Guest Ranch was intended to function as a clubhouse for Skypark residents complete with an equestrian center, a small subsistence farm, pool and plenty of enriching recreational activities. 2012- At the end of 2011, the Zannon Family Foundation made a long-term investment in acquiring the New Cuyama Airport property with the vision of rehabilitating the site to be a low-cost resource for programs and organizations working to advance sustainable living practices and technologies. Plans began soon after towards developing a framework and organization to develop the space and coordinate with prospective programs and institutions. In 2014 Blue Sky Sustainable Living Center ("Blue Sky Center") received 501(c)(3) not-for-profit status, endeavoring to reclaim this property for the public good. The Chumash called the peak of Mount Piños the center of the universe, or center of the world depending on the translation. This campground is at the southeast base of this mountain. The San Andreas fault is just about 8 miles away, and many other faults meet nearby. The mountains here are full of geological signs of the Forces that ripped away Santa Barbara from the North American plate as it was flipped upside down. This is the entrance to the Enchanted Forest.

Lockwood Valley is so close to Los Angeles and other urban areas, but feels 1000 miles away. Our neighborhood is a gem within Lockwood Valley. The community has less than 20 residences so it is very rural, but neighborly. There are horses nearby, you will hear some roosters in the distance, and if you are lucky, you may hear the African lions or wolves from the next canyon over where there is a (fully contained) wildlife sanctuary called Steve Martins Working Wildlife (not the funny guy).
Great secluded spot for a fully contained RV. Easy entrance from a good dirt road. The actual property of the site is 1/8 of an acre and is surrounded by forest and fields. A picnic table is nestled in a grove of trees next to a steel fire pit ring. Bring your hammock to relax under big shady piñon pines. The site is about 200 yards from the entrance to the Los Padres National Forest with great hiking, mountain biking, birdwatching, hunting, etc. There is currently no privacy barrier between the campsite and the dirt road, but the traffic is extremely minimal.
There are two 12’x24’ horse corrals on the property. This area is ideal for horseback trail riding and the campsite location makes for the perfect base camp.
This is a superb stargazing spot, far from the city lights. Many amateur astronomers come to this area for the dark skies. At a mile high, nights can be very cold, and in the winter it is possible to get up to a couple feet of snow. Weather conditions such as heavy rain or snow can make the roads and campsite impassable at times so cancellations are possible in this case (this happens a lot less than we would like, of course, because we need the precipitation!).

This is a strictly PACK IT IN / PACK IT OUT site. Please take all trash and waste with you. If you are not self-contained, you can find vault toilets at Traver Ranch, Soda Lake Overlook, and the Visitor Center. Because there is no water or service here, you must arrive well-supplied. Be sure to download your reservation to your phone for proof of booking, as cell service is unreliable. Occasionally, you may find people picnicking at the site; please politely inform them of your reservation so they can move along.
We highly recommend exploring Painted Rock, Caliente Ridge, and the Soda Lake boardwalk during your stay. Keep an eye out for the elk—they are a majestic sight! Be sure to stop by the Visitor Center as well.

Our first truck-tent camping experience was a great success! The Grand View site at Songdog was perfect for us. It appeared to be the farthest site from the "East" and "West" mesa sites, overlooking scenic New Cuyama (I believe)! While there were a few other campers our weekend, none were close to us! Felt private and secluded, we were happy. One morning, we walked to the store to get some snacks and sticks of wood. Jen helped us back to our site with a ride on the Kubota which was much appreciated! A short drive from home but a longggg sigh of relief and relaxation once there, we'd definitely return!

A beautiful property, with so many animals and nature spots to see! The only thing I would add that I didn’t realize in the ad or reviews, is the tent/suv spot is pretty open. Not really any privacy. It is next to cute cows with a nice bathroom though. Big bass in the pond!! Hosts were awesome, even took me in the chicken coop to find worms for fishing! We will definitely come back!❤️

I’ve really enjoyed trying out all of the different sites. Each has its own perks. Always appreciate the how well the camp site is kept and I bought fire wood and a popsicle from the store. Such a cool place.

David, once again, offered his welcoming hospitality providing us with another unforgettable experience at the Grant Line Camp. His property provides numerous opportunities for leisurely hikes or, for the more adventurous, the Los Padres National Forest is located very nearby. It is quiet, peaceful, and the scenery cannot be beat! We look forward to returning again in the near future to experience the Cuyama Valley and all that David's Grant Line Camp have to offer!

Great little spot on a hill overlooking the valley below and the the mountains behind. The pergola provides some much need shade and the fire pit was perfect. The dirt road in can be a bit tricky but it's worth it. Very peaceful and no trash around.... Please keep it that way

Super accessible, clean, cute and quiet. Loved the pond and hours spend on kayaks and fishing. Nolan checked in with us and made us feel welcomed. First time using Hipcamp and hopefully not the last time.

Great private spot with no neighbors. Sweeping views. Bare bones just a fire pit and table , perfect for us and just as expected. Pretty easy to find using Google Maps. Missed the flowers by a couple weeks thus the foxtails were out and challenging with dogs. Other than the foxtails, it was a great spot. We’d come again earlier next spring during the green season.

Beautiful property! This site felt very secluded and was exactly what we were looking for taking our 7month old on his first camping trip. Our dog loved roaming around off leash. The lounge chairs were an excellent touch! Will be back again!

What a treat! We stopped here on our way from Berkeley to Joshua Tree (there are very few camping options mid way), and we were pleasantly surprised. Our 8 year old and 6 year old LOVED feeding the llamas and alpacas. In fact, it was one of their highlights of their Spring Break. For campers (we were in our van), there is a hammock, picnic table, fire put and grill.

This is a great hipcamp! We (dogs included) loved our stay here. Easy to find, great location, private, dog friendly, amazing views. There are 4 site on this property, but they’re spaced generously. You can’t see the other sites from yours so we felt very private which was great for having the dogs off leash. Very off grid - primitive bathroom and camp set up (it’s awesome) but the hosts provide a trash can, fire stuff, and some other helpful things! Overall would definitely do again and would definitely recommend!

The only thing I would criticize about this campsite for the directions found on Apple Maps directed us to the direct opposite side of the little town and we ended up driving into someone’s backyard, luckily though they provided some instructions on where to go, and we were able to figure it out in the dark, but if possible, please update whether it is everything else was perfect! We loved it

William was very friendly and communicative, and made sure that I have everything that I needed. He’s still working on making the campground a more welcoming place (he acquired the property only 3 years ago and he works full time) but for me it was good enough. I stayed one night during my road trip on the way up north. He even told me about great restaurants to visit in town.
Hey, William! My visit to Asian Experience didn’t turn out right but I did go to Arts and loved their salad and service.

I made a reservation late in the evening so I had to drive on a two way road (from Hwy 5) in the dark for about 60 miles, arriving at 9:30pm. A regretful thoughts kept coming up in my head “Why did I do this? Just because it was a few dollars cheaper?” When I got up in the morning, however, that regret completely vanished. It was a beautiful campground with all of the modern amenities such as toilet, shower, and even fully equipped cantina (kitchen) where I ended up cooking and eating while I enjoyed the cool breeze and beautiful mountain views in the distance. I had short conversations with some guests who stayed in the huts. Everyone seemed to have liked the experience. They were quite casual about checkin/checkout. I don’t know what time is the checkout but I think I left at 2pm. Thoroughly enjoyed it and I’ll definitely come back (next time for a longer stay.)

The site was perfect- views and quiet that made it feel backcountry with a “pool,” lounge chairs and a private potable water tap that made it feel like a luxury hotel. 10/10
