Cold Creek is a unique 112-acre property in the San Bernardino National Forest. Because of its location in a 3,200 foot elevation, it's colder than the Southern California deserts and warmer than the cold mountains above us. Our temperatures rarely exceed 90F and rarely drop below 40F. We have plenty sun and about two to three days of snow every winter. A year-around creek keeps everything green and fresh around the year. We are the second owners since 1913, and operate a small organic orchard on the property. They would live here in the winter, and spend the summers hunting and gathering pine nuts and acorns up in the Tehachapi and San Gabriel mountains. This region is called the Antelope Valley because there used to be antelope-looking creatures called pronghorns.My first trip out here was to watch the Blood Wolf Moon lunar eclipse of 2019. It didn't disappoint! My first time out there I saw BOTH ENDS of a rainbow in front of the snowy Tehachapis!! Super dark skies, and a million stars at night. You'll probably see the Milky Way! It does get breezy at night, so dress appropriately.It feels like the wild west out here, and that's the main appeal--no rules, nobody watching. Think long dirt roads, tumbleweeds, bones, and maybe some old bullet shells (there's no shooting allowed on the property anymore). This is not a state-maintained, paved, manicured operation--it's the edge of the desert wilderness. Please respect the property and clean up after yourself!This is for people who are comfortable exploring beyond a concrete slab with electricity and janitor-cleaned restrooms. There are no designated sites, so pick whatever looks good to you. We often have multiple parties at once, so feel free to spread out.This land used to be the domain of the Ketanemuk tribe, which I think means People From The East. In the summer they would go up and hunt and get pine nuts in the Tehachapi Mountains, and acorns from the oak trees in the San Gabriels.The property itself is along a dirt road called Avenue C. It's about a 20 minute drive from the town of Neenach (pronounced Nee-nack), where there's a general store and a cafe. They make a great breakfast burrito. It's also a few minutes from the State Poppy Reserve, which blooms in the spring with miles of California poppies.If you have a larger group or event in mind, get in touch! I had an absolutely wonderful and truly unique experience at Josh & Jessica’s Tent Camp @ Working Ostrich Ranch! From the moment I arrived, the hosts made me feel right at home. They were incredibly welcoming and went out of their way to ensure I was comfortable, offering clear instructions and being very accessible throughout my stay. Their attention to detail really showed, especially in how they prioritize the safety of the magnificent ostriches—this is definitely not a petting zoo! It's a real, working ranch, and the rules in the description are there to keep both guests and animals safe. The elder rancher is a fountain of knowledge—his stories and insights were fascinating, and I thoroughly enjoyed chatting with him. It was clear that he has a deep respect and understanding of the land and animals. My campsite was tucked away in a peaceful corner by the archery range—an ideal spot for stargazing under the open sky and listening to the enchanting sounds of the surrounding wildlife. I loved the rustic charm of the site, which offered a sense of solitude while still feeling completely safe and well-maintained. I’m already planning to return for a longer stay next time. I’d love to take the ranch tour and maybe even try an archery lesson! If you're looking for a memorable and peaceful camping experience at an authentic working farm, I highly recommend this spot. It’s truly a one-of-a-kind HipCamp.

This was such a great setup! We do not go camping often, so I wanted to book a spot that was between camping and “glamping”. This was that perfect inbetween! It does get pretty cold at night during the fall/winter, so make sure to pack plenty of extra layers and blankets. The campsite was very well taken care of, and there weren’t even any bugs inside the A frames. He even included a propane tank, which was great since we forgot to bring one! We had a lovely stay and would recommend it to anyone looking for camping near LA

Had a great time staying here with my family! Everything was so clean , there was cell service so that was nice ! Also some things to note there is a cooking area just no fridge so bring ice and a cooler! No water heater so the shower was cold but felt nice!!! There is a working toilet on site so that was amazing! Two A frames one with a king size bed which was very comfortable it can get windy throughout the day and night but honestly wasn’t a big deal. There’s a port to charge things and some night lights We brought a portable dvd player so once it got dark we were inside the A frame

Juniper flats does allow nudity so don’t come if you think people won’t be doing it… they will be. It was clean and well taken care of, staff was available when needed

The site is so great to go camping with a group. Some of us actually used our own tents, some who couldn’t handle the cold used the a-frames that are available. It was a nice little getaway from the cities and all the noise. The stars are sooo pretty at night. I brought my dogs and it was great, I didn’t have to worry about them at all, granted they are trained. They were wandering around and the site is far away from at street, that I let them do their own thing. The girls liked it so much, one of them is coming back with her family to enjoy the sight again.
