About the Property:
Above the Clouds campsite is
surrounded by beautiful, stately
trees and overlooks the Valley of the Moon with a stunning mountain view. We are just 11 miles from the city of Sonoma and only 8 miles from the Napa Valley - making both destinations really easy to get to. You can enjoy the California wineries, restaurants, and shops that you'd like! We are also ideally located near Jack London State Park - which is a really pretty and historic place to go! The opportunities for hiking around our property are endless, and definitely head to the wineries if that's of interest to you. On our property you can enjoy exploring our more-than 20 acres of land, taking the row-boat (provided by Hosts) out on our pond, hiking or just relaxing in a serene setting and watching a great variety of birds.
Formerly utilized as a bed and breakfast, when we moved to the property we definitely wanted to continue sharing the land and views with guests. As hosts, we are around and enjoy getting to know the our visitors if you are up for that, otherwise we are also happy to respect total privacy. There are 3 sites next to the pond, we have one that is there all the time in the summer but those folks only come a couple of times each month. The 2 others are right next to each other near the pond. We haven't started having more than one rented at a time yet but do expect to start that soon. You may have a neighbor or 2.
We hope you enjoy the beautiful sunsets and being literally above the clouds as much as we do!
About the Listing:
Come park your RV on our property and set up camp at a beautiful spot right next to the pond. You should expect to see us on the property, though your site is well away from the house We have minimal electrical and we do have water hookups available for your RV, we do allow generators. There is a BBQ grill that you are welcome to use for cooking some wonderful meals if you'd like! You can enjoy a bite to eat at the picnic table near your campsite.
There is also potable water from our natural spring available onsite for guests.
You can enjoy watching the birds, turkeys and deer that meander through the meadow, and feel free to roam around the property taking in the fresh outdoor air!
Additional Details to Note:
- Check-in is after 2pm and
check-out is before 12pm
- Things to bring: Everything you need to camp comfortably! Think: toilet paper, cookware, bathing suits if you like, etc.
- We do not have wifi available on site and cell reception is spotty, especially for certain carriers. Please prepare accordingly for your travels and your stay.
- There is a fire ban in effect, so please no campfires, but we do allow you to use a propane fire pit if you bring it yourself.
- We welcome your pets! They can be off leash if they are friendly and if they don't run off - we do not have a fence.
- You can contact us if you'd like to check in early - if nobody needs to check out, we are happy to accommodate you!

For 70 years the Nelson family has been farming vineyards and attracting people every year to the beautiful region of Hopland. It is truly a family affair as each generation has put in their time and energy, infusing this ranch with their own flair.
In 1951 Herman and Clara Nelson sold their ranch in what is now Silicon Valley and headed north, landing in Southern Mendocino County near the town of Hopland. This place is truly special. We almost hesitated to leave a glowing review because part of us wanted to keep it a well-guarded secret (future availability anxiety is real 😉)… but if you have the opportunity to stay here, you absolutely should.
Peter is a wonderful host. Genuinely warm, welcoming, and clearly loves meeting people and sharing his beautiful property. From the moment we arrived, it felt less like checking in somewhere and more like being thoughtfully welcomed. His care for the land and the experience really comes through.
The setting is peaceful, beautifully maintained, and designed in a way that lets you fully relax and settle in. Everything felt intentional without being fussy, private yet inviting.
We loved our stay and left already talking about when we could come back. A true gem and one we’re very grateful we got to enjoy.

Stayed there with our 23' Airstream for a quick weekend trip. Site is great with power and water and it's perched on a hill over Calistoga - about a 5 minute drive to town. Peter came out and gave us a quick tour of the site and a heads up on some of the local things going on in town for the weekend which were both appreciated. If it's your first trip and you are towing, there are parts of the road where you might say, "I hope those goes to the right spot," or "I really hope I fit..." - but all was good for my sized rig. You need to back in, but there is a loop on the site to get you turned back around for leaving. We are definitely keeping it the list of places to stay when we want to spend the weekend in Napa.

The area is wonderful and we enjoyed the multitude of birds on the property! The self-serve barn near the road was simple to understand (apple cider was great!). The RV space was the perfect size for us and the bed was comfortable. We spent time enjoying parts of Petaluma, Point Reyes, and Inverness as well.

Colleen and her dog Mimi were so delightful and welcoming to my family and two large woofers.
The space fitted our 27 foot Airstream easily and the views were spectacular, especially at sunrise and sunset when the tule fog happened to be in the valley and we floated above.

Our family had a beautiful time at Sheep Camp! Debra was a wonderful host and easy to communicate with before and throughout our stay. The kids loved the bunk beds, and we all enjoyed the outdoor dining area with its cozy lights. The farm-fresh eggs were delicious, and it was so fun to watch the chickens running around and the emus up close. It was foggy during our visit, but that only added to the magic of staying at the farm. We’d definitely love to come back!

Colleen was great and so nice, unfortunately we did not get a chance to meet Phil. This property has an AMAZING view!! The camp sites are nice and flat as well. Our dog had a blast as roaming the property. It’s worth the trip to see what discover. You will not be disappointed! We will be back

This is a great camp spot above Calistoga. We love the location and the attention to detail that Peter has put into this welcoming site, including electric and water, lights, table and even an outdoor shower. You can tell he put a lot of love and care into wanting people to love the site as much as he does.
Peter met us when we arrived, made sure we could back into the site, gave us a tour and How-to of everything.
This is a special place. It gave us space for us to be able to unwind and be part of nature. We will be back!

We had a great stay in our 25' MB Forester Class C! A little hot but manageable. First we stopped in the wine tasting room to register and sample all the wines. Then we headed to our site on the East side. One section of dirt road was first gear but the RV made it without any problem. I'm not sure if the road was wet. You are basically in an active pasture on the top of a high ridge looking down at the valley to the East and the valley to the West. Incredible views with only the faint sound of traffic on 101. We did a nice mile or so hike along the ridge with cattle that was fantastic. We just stayed one night but we will be back to do it again. Full cell service as well as the tower is right nearby. If you like boondocking/dry camping, this is an enjoyable stay!

This is a wonderful location if you are seeking tranquility. Sitting by the pond and relaxing by the pool melts all the stress away.
Both Phil and Colleen were warm and gracious hosts. They were there when I needed them and not there when I didn’t. I would not hesitate to go back.

Beautiful place to camp in the hills above wine country! Phil met us outside and led us to the spot, which was level for sleeping. There were chairs and a picnic table for use, and the water and electricity hook-up were great. We had dinner while watching an amazing sunset, we’d definitely stay here again!

What a great place with wonderful hosts. Very quiet with beautiful views. Lots of wildlife. Woke up to deer grazing on the property, fish in the pond, woodpeckers, hawks, finches and swallowtail butterflies. Close to many wineries and great hiking and stargazing at Sugarloaf State Park.
