Please close your umbrella when your not at the site, especially when it's windy. We have lost far to many very expensive solar light umbrellas due to the wind when it picks up.
Please support our farm by buying eggs, hats, stickers, and other items, all for sale in the barn.

1948- On January 1, 1948 a wildcatter named George Hadley, who had been oil prospecting in the valley for 10 years, made the first oil strike in the Cuyama Valley. Richfield Oil Company soon moved in and extracted nearly 300 million barrels of oil in just a few short years. To accommodate an exploding workforce in the early 1950s, the company built the town of New Cuyama, its infrastructure, public buildings, the Cuyama airstrip (L88) and all the industrial structures that are now home to Blue Sky. Richfield Oil Company, later merging with Atlantic Oil Company forming the Atlantic Richfield Oil Company (ARCO), created high-paying jobs, a safe and prosperous community, and developed schools, churches, and recreational areas for the employee-residents.1973- With dwindling production in the area and new discoveries in Alaska, Atlantic-Richfield Oil Company put the town of New Cuyama and its associated infrastructure up for sale. Word of an entire town for sale made its way to entrepreneur, Russell O’Quinn of the Foundation for Airborne Relief (FAR) and Mildred Dotson, a wealthy widow from Tulsa, Oklahoma. The two worked together to acquire the townsite and adjacent land. O’Quinn, an aviator, inventor, and test pilot, aspired to use the New Cuyama airstrip and facilities as a base for humanitarian relief and a non-profit trade school. Though not fully realized, FAR’s primary vision included utilizing converted military aircraft to airlift food and medical supplies to developing countries and global disaster areas. Dotson had loftier goals. Her plans included an 18-hole fly-in golf course, expansion of the Buckhorn Restaurant and Motel, and a 40- to 50-acre lake for amphibious landing and water sports. 1986- Another visionary, Harry Kislevitz, inventor of the popular design tool Colorforms® and founder of Future City/Villages International, sought to develop the site as a “City of Friendship,” an all-electric village of 5,000 earthen homes. The dwellings were to be designed by Nader Khalili, an Iranian-born architect who specialized in earthen structures, worked with NASA on prototypes for lunar homes and received an award from the United Nations for his work towards the development of low cost, sustainable structures for human shelter in impoverished and disaster prone environments. One 628-sq-ft Khalili prototype remains on the property today ("the Cantina"). Khalili went on to form the California Institute for Earth Art and Architecture, Cal-Earth, in Hesperia, CA.1993- Recognizing the transformative potential of clean, solar power and the attractiveness of a rural destination, entrepreneur Mike Nolan worked to develop the Solar Skypark and Big Sky Guest Ranch with Santa Barbara Architect, Barry Berkus. The Sky Park included plans for sixty-five fly-in residences on one-acre lots powered completely from clean, solar energy. The Big Sky Guest Ranch was intended to function as a clubhouse for Skypark residents complete with an equestrian center, a small subsistence farm, pool and plenty of enriching recreational activities. 2012- At the end of 2011, the Zannon Family Foundation made a long-term investment in acquiring the New Cuyama Airport property with the vision of rehabilitating the site to be a low-cost resource for programs and organizations working to advance sustainable living practices and technologies. Plans began soon after towards developing a framework and organization to develop the space and coordinate with prospective programs and institutions. In 2014 Blue Sky Sustainable Living Center ("Blue Sky Center") received 501(c)(3) not-for-profit status, endeavoring to reclaim this property for the public good. Today, Blue Sky Center provides unduplicated services and technical assistance to support small businesses and entrepreneurs as well as the local food system, with core work focused on community research and advocacy led by Cuyamans. We have planted many young trees and continue to plant trees and native shrubs around and near the sites. We have picnic tables, table coverings, fire pits, and camping rugs/footprints. There is also an outdoor shower, a shower tent with hot water, and an upgraded porta-potty with a sink.
Note: During times when high heat is predicted, we strongly recommend that our Hipcampers bring pop-up shade tents or canopies for their sites.
The Hipcamp is adjacent to our working ranch, and any photos of old sheds, trucks, a wood lot, or other equipment are NOT on the Hipcamp, but you will drive past that property to get to the separate Hipcamp area.
Wineries, Farmer's Markets, Craft Breweries, dispensaries, and more are within 10 to 15 minutes of our site. Our location allows moments when you may see Hawks, Owls, Geese, Swallows, Robins, Bluebirds, and more.

Our two-story home is located on a quiet street at 5771 feet. Lovely pine ceilings throughout the cabin contribute to the warm ambience. The 1000 sq. ft. interior is furnished in a modern style with a leather sofa and some cool abstract art on the walls. The living room has a wood stove and 50" smart HDTV with direct satellite & Blu Ray DVD. A skylight in the living room brings in lots of light.
The master bedroom (queen bed) is separate from the downstairs and reached via a spiral staircase leading up to French doors. The master bathroom adjoins the bedroom and has a skylight over the double length tiled shower. A second bedroom downstairs has a murphy bed with a queen size mattress. There is air conditioning in the living room as well as in the upstairs bedroom and 2 fans are provided-- although generally temps are not above 85 degrees on a hot day and generally drop into the 60's in the evening.
Upper and lower decks offer lovely views of Mt. Pinos and the San Emigdio range. Relax on the sunny decks or in the Adirondack chair near the pond surrounded by pine trees. Plan to do some bbqing--it is so pleasant to do some grilling on the upper deck bbq and dine outdoors.
Our cabin is clean and well-kept. It can comfortably accommodate 4 people. Please NO smoking or pets!

Her plans included an 18-hole fly-in golf course, expansion of the Buckhorn Restaurant and Motel, and a 40- to 50-acre lake for amphibious landing and water sports. 1986- Another visionary, Harry Kislevitz, inventor of the popular design tool Colorforms® and founder of Future City/Villages International, sought to develop the site as a “City of Friendship,” an all-electric village of 5,000 earthen homes. The dwellings were to be designed by Nader Khalili, an Iranian-born architect who specialized in earthen structures, worked with NASA on prototypes for lunar homes and received an award from the United Nations for his work towards the development of low cost, sustainable structures for human shelter in impoverished and disaster prone environments. One 628-sq-ft Khalili prototype remains on the property today ("the Cantina"). Khalili went on to form the California Institute for Earth Art and Architecture, Cal-Earth, in Hesperia, CA.1993- Recognizing the transformative potential of clean, solar power and the attractiveness of a rural destination, entrepreneur Mike Nolan worked to develop the Solar Skypark and Big Sky Guest Ranch with Santa Barbara Architect, Barry Berkus. The Sky Park included plans for sixty-five fly-in residences on one-acre lots powered completely from clean, solar energy. The Big Sky Guest Ranch was intended to function as a clubhouse for Skypark residents complete with an equestrian center, a small subsistence farm, pool and plenty of enriching recreational activities. 2012- At the end of 2011, the Zannon Family Foundation made a long-term investment in acquiring the New Cuyama Airport property with the vision of rehabilitating the site to be a low-cost resource for programs and organizations working to advance sustainable living practices and technologies. Plans began soon after towards developing a framework and organization to develop the space and coordinate with prospective programs and institutions. In 2014 Blue Sky Sustainable Living Center ("Blue Sky Center") received 501(c)(3) not-for-profit status, endeavoring to reclaim this property for the public good. The Hipcamp is adjacent to our working ranch, and any photos of old sheds, trucks, a wood lot, or other equipment are NOT on the Hipcamp, but you will drive past that property to get to the separate Hipcamp area.

The living room has a wood stove and 50" smart HDTV with direct satellite & Blu Ray DVD. A skylight in the living room brings in lots of light.
The master bedroom (queen bed) is separate from the downstairs and reached via a spiral staircase leading up to French doors. The master bathroom adjoins the bedroom and has a skylight over the double length tiled shower. A second bedroom downstairs has a murphy bed with a queen size mattress. There is air conditioning in the living room as well as in the upstairs bedroom and 2 fans are provided-- although generally temps are not above 85 degrees on a hot day and generally drop into the 60's in the evening.
Upper and lower decks offer lovely views of Mt. Pinos and the San Emigdio range. Relax on the sunny decks or in the Adirondack chair near the pond surrounded by pine trees. Plan to do some bbqing--it is so pleasant to do some grilling on the upper deck bbq and dine outdoors.
Our cabin is clean and well-kept. It can comfortably accommodate 4 people. Please NO smoking or pets!
Mt. Pinos has the best view of the stars in So. California—star parties are common whenever there is a new moon. In addition, since we are in the Padres National Forest - wildlife (deer, raccoons, bobcat, fox, bunnies, squirrels, quail, stellar and scrub jays) abounds. Ra

One of our favorite Hipcamp stays so far. You’re surrounded by mountains, yet you can see the ocean through the canyons, especially beautiful at sunset. We even saw deer grazing in the early mornings, which was really special.
The site was easy to get to with no off-roading needed, and the property felt private and well maintained. The gravel areas were a huge plus since it stayed clean and not muddy despite recent rains. There’s plenty of outdoor space and seating, it’s dog-friendly, and the deck was perfect for relaxing or doing yoga.
The modern tiny home had everything we needed, including a fully stocked kitchen, full-size fridge, and Nespresso coffee. The host was very accommodating and responsive throughout our stay. We had perfect weather the first night, and while the second night brought strong Santa Ana winds, we still had a great overall experience.
We didn’t get to use the Japanese soaking tub due to the cold and wind, but it’s a great excuse to come back. Would absolutely stay here again.

We were lucky to have the run of the whole place, although we actually slept in the wagon, which was warm and cozy. The bathroom was a ridiculously wonderful and unexpected bonus as it was far from what you'd expect from the campaign trip. Outdoor bath, outdoor shower heater, hairdryer shampoo, and conditioner. Blue Sky was the perfect camp site for me. It was a little cold out at the end of December, but as long as you’re prepared, the weather is not too much of a problem. I arrived with no trouble, and the instructions were very helpful for finding my campsite, even in the dark. The tent platforms are sturdy. The showers run hot, and the communal areas were clean and comfortable. The communal cantina area was well stocked for cooking, and there are even fridges available. This is a really great stop for a road trip, or a few days stay. Host was responsive and proactive, providing activity guides and an informative welcome message. I was not personally bothered by the dogs barking. Altogether a great trip, thank you Blue Sky!

Worth looking over the website and some print materials available on site to learn more. The tent campground is a bit sparse and exposed, come prepared if weather or wind is expected. For my birthday, we booked Sites 1 & 2. Both were a great size and had electricity hookup for phone chargers, picnic tables, and running water.
We tent camped and the ground was very level for all tents.
We went with 11 girls and we felt very safe, comfortable, and ready to camp!
Ojai is a quick drive away and we went into town for a farmers market on Sunday!
The hosts were SO kind. They were very accommodating & Dave even took us out to pet the goats! The animals were awesome!!!

We had the BEST time!
We booked both Campsite 1 and Campsite 2. Both were really great. Both had an electricity hookup for a phone charger, running water, and picnic tables. We tent camped and the property was very even, perfect for a throw up tent.
Ojai is a quick drive (maybe 15 minutes) & we went to the downtown strip of Ojai for a farmers market on Sunday morning.
We celebrated my birthday with 10 girlfriends. We felt safe, comfortable, and it was the perfect getaway. Everyone fit very comfortably and we had so much fun.
The animals on the property are so sweet.
The hosts are awesome, they even let us pet their goats!!!

Aside from staff, I had the whole campsite to myself on a Monday. Because of this, I wanted to park near the trees and behind the huts, since they were empty and would provide a lovely view in the morning. The host was responsive and I was able to enjoy a peaceful stay. The shower was warm and cooking in the communal kitchen was lovely. I really enjoyed seeing the trees through the arched and portal windows. Next time I am definitely bringing a group of friends!

Darin was the most welcoming and genuinely great host I’ve ever had the pleasure to deal with on HipCamp. Their property is beautiful and it was exciting seeing all of the farm animals, especially for my two year old. The fresh chicken and duck eggs were better than you could buy anywhere and the ribeye steak that Darin was so generous to grill and share with the rest of the guests was to die for. I will never forget this experience and sure to come back next spring.

Where to go
California's Central Coast
It's hard to deny the beauty of the Central Coast, whether it's the cliff-lined stretches of Big Sur or the Mission-style architecture of Santa Barbara. Carpinteria is an excellent base from which to explore the entire region and its forest-filled inland areas.
The Channel Islands
Off the coast of Ventura, accessible only by boat, this chain of eight islands is a must for lovers of the natural world. Here you’ll be able to see all sorts of plants and animals that aren’t found anywhere else on the planet. Five of the islands comprise Channel Islands National Park, each with a single campground.
Southern California
From Carpinteria, it's not far to Southern California, where campers can find quiet coastal communities and lively big cities. While the region is known for its beaches, it's equally fabulous for inland exploration, including Death Valley National Park and Joshua Tree National Park.
When to go
Carpinteria is a year-round destination, with pleasant, moderate weather throughout the year. If coming to surf, summer and fall are ideal, despite summertime getting major crowds. To see wildlife—notably sea and sea lions—come between December and May or visit when the tide is low, revealing tide pools full of colorful sea creatures.
