Beautiful natural campsites in the Valley of the Moon (Ojai Valley). Our sites are within an eighth of a mile of walking, running, biking, and riding trails from Ojai to the beaches of Ventura. On many days you can experience Ojai’s famous pink moments. You can hike the trails above Ojai, boat, eat, or picnic at Lake Casitas. Travel to nearby Ventura to shop, fish the pier, or take a deep sea fishing charter or Island charter to Whale watch or fish around the Channel Islands.
Please note the aerial view of the camping area recently placed by Hipcamp is NOT AT ALL REPRESENTATIVE of the current camping sites and shows a photo that is many years old when the site was merely land.
That photo is without any of the existing amenities or improvements. The actual sites are all Larger than Federal Park and Statepark guidelines, with averages of 20'x30' for campsites and 20'x40' for a long RVCampsite.
We have planted many young trees and continue to plant trees and native shrubs around and near the sites. We have picnic tables, table coverings, fire pits, and camping rugs/footprints. There is also an outdoor shower, a shower tent with hot water, and an upgraded porta-potty with a sink.
Note: During times when high heat is predicted, we strongly recommend that our Hipcampers bring pop-up shade tents or canopies for their sites.
The Hipcamp is adjacent to our working ranch, and any photos of old sheds, trucks, a wood lot, or other equipment are NOT on the Hipcamp, but you will drive past that property to get to the separate Hipcamp area.
Wineries, Farmer's Markets, Craft Breweries, dispensaries, and more are within 10 to 15 minutes of our site. Our location allows moments when you may see Hawks, Owls, Geese, Swallows, Robins, Bluebirds, and more.
We offer both tent and RV camping.

1948- On January 1, 1948 a wildcatter named George Hadley, who had been oil prospecting in the valley for 10 years, made the first oil strike in the Cuyama Valley. Richfield Oil Company soon moved in and extracted nearly 300 million barrels of oil in just a few short years. To accommodate an exploding workforce in the early 1950s, the company built the town of New Cuyama, its infrastructure, public buildings, the Cuyama airstrip (L88) and all the industrial structures that are now home to Blue Sky. Richfield Oil Company, later merging with Atlantic Oil Company forming the Atlantic Richfield Oil Company (ARCO), created high-paying jobs, a safe and prosperous community, and developed schools, churches, and recreational areas for the employee-residents.1973- With dwindling production in the area and new discoveries in Alaska, Atlantic-Richfield Oil Company put the town of New Cuyama and its associated infrastructure up for sale. Word of an entire town for sale made its way to entrepreneur, Russell O’Quinn of the Foundation for Airborne Relief (FAR) and Mildred Dotson, a wealthy widow from Tulsa, Oklahoma. The two worked together to acquire the townsite and adjacent land. O’Quinn, an aviator, inventor, and test pilot, aspired to use the New Cuyama airstrip and facilities as a base for humanitarian relief and a non-profit trade school. Though not fully realized, FAR’s primary vision included utilizing converted military aircraft to airlift food and medical supplies to developing countries and global disaster areas. Dotson had loftier goals. Her plans included an 18-hole fly-in golf course, expansion of the Buckhorn Restaurant and Motel, and a 40- to 50-acre lake for amphibious landing and water sports. 1986- Another visionary, Harry Kislevitz, inventor of the popular design tool Colorforms® and founder of Future City/Villages International, sought to develop the site as a “City of Friendship,” an all-electric village of 5,000 earthen homes. The dwellings were to be designed by Nader Khalili, an Iranian-born architect who specialized in earthen structures, worked with NASA on prototypes for lunar homes and received an award from the United Nations for his work towards the development of low cost, sustainable structures for human shelter in impoverished and disaster prone environments. One 628-sq-ft Khalili prototype remains on the property today ("the Cantina"). Khalili went on to form the California Institute for Earth Art and Architecture, Cal-Earth, in Hesperia, CA.1993- Recognizing the transformative potential of clean, solar power and the attractiveness of a rural destination, entrepreneur Mike Nolan worked to develop the Solar Skypark and Big Sky Guest Ranch with Santa Barbara Architect, Barry Berkus. The Sky Park included plans for sixty-five fly-in residences on one-acre lots powered completely from clean, solar energy. The Big Sky Guest Ranch was intended to function as a clubhouse for Skypark residents complete with an equestrian center, a small subsistence farm, pool and plenty of enriching recreational activities. 2012- At the end of 2011, the Zannon Family Foundation made a long-term investment in acquiring the New Cuyama Airport property with the vision of rehabilitating the site to be a low-cost resource for programs and organizations working to advance sustainable living practices and technologies. Plans began soon after towards developing a framework and organization to develop the space and coordinate with prospective programs and institutions. In 2014 Blue Sky Sustainable Living Center ("Blue Sky Center") received 501(c)(3) not-for-profit status, endeavoring to reclaim this property for the public good. Today, Blue Sky Center provides unduplicated services and technical assistance to support small businesses and entrepreneurs as well as the local food system, with core work focused on community research and advocacy led by Cuyamans. Prospector Ranch is an 1800s style ranch located right next door to the acre used for Hipcamping.
The ranch is made up of their home and is also a venue for filming, photo shoots and small events. When not being used, camping guest are welcome to enjoy the area down around the authentic saloon, use the picnic area under large Oak trees and hike the property. We purchased the ranch 8 years ago and love being outside of the city in the mountains. Stargazing is a must when staying there!
The campsite is NEXT DOOR to Prospector Ranch, which is our 1800s-style ranch tucked away in the Santa Monica mountains, close to beaches, vineyards, amazing hiking, biking to the beach and the city! The wide open empty lot looks out at the beautiful mountains. Enjoy stunning sun sets and Picnic under the grand Oak Trees at the ranch or maybe come by the saloon next door for a cold beverage if we are around. :-). Please pack your trash out there is a dumpster at the front gate entrance/exit for your trash.
Please close your umbrella when your not at the site, especially when it's windy. We have lost far to many very expensive solar light umbrellas due to the wind when it picks up.
Please support our farm by buying eggs, hats, stickers, and other items, all for sale in the barn.

1948- On January 1, 1948 a wildcatter named George Hadley, who had been oil prospecting in the valley for 10 years, made the first oil strike in the Cuyama Valley. Richfield Oil Company soon moved in and extracted nearly 300 million barrels of oil in just a few short years. To accommodate an exploding workforce in the early 1950s, the company built the town of New Cuyama, its infrastructure, public buildings, the Cuyama airstrip (L88) and all the industrial structures that are now home to Blue Sky. Richfield Oil Company, later merging with Atlantic Oil Company forming the Atlantic Richfield Oil Company (ARCO), created high-paying jobs, a safe and prosperous community, and developed schools, churches, and recreational areas for the employee-residents.1973- With dwindling production in the area and new discoveries in Alaska, Atlantic-Richfield Oil Company put the town of New Cuyama and its associated infrastructure up for sale. Word of an entire town for sale made its way to entrepreneur, Russell O’Quinn of the Foundation for Airborne Relief (FAR) and Mildred Dotson, a wealthy widow from Tulsa, Oklahoma. The two worked together to acquire the townsite and adjacent land. O’Quinn, an aviator, inventor, and test pilot, aspired to use the New Cuyama airstrip and facilities as a base for humanitarian relief and a non-profit trade school. Though not fully realized, FAR’s primary vision included utilizing converted military aircraft to airlift food and medical supplies to developing countries and global disaster areas. Dotson had loftier goals. Her plans included an 18-hole fly-in golf course, expansion of the Buckhorn Restaurant and Motel, and a 40- to 50-acre lake for amphibious landing and water sports. 1986- Another visionary, Harry Kislevitz, inventor of the popular design tool Colorforms® and founder of Future City/Villages International, sought to develop the site as a “City of Friendship,” an all-electric village of 5,000 earthen homes. The dwellings were to be designed by Nader Khalili, an Iranian-born architect who specialized in earthen structures, worked with NASA on prototypes for lunar homes and received an award from the United Nations for his work towards the development of low cost, sustainable structures for human shelter in impoverished and disaster prone environments. One 628-sq-ft Khalili prototype remains on the property today ("the Cantina"). Khalili went on to form the California Institute for Earth Art and Architecture, Cal-Earth, in Hesperia, CA.1993- Recognizing the transformative potential of clean, solar power and the attractiveness of a rural destination, entrepreneur Mike Nolan worked to develop the Solar Skypark and Big Sky Guest Ranch with Santa Barbara Architect, Barry Berkus. The Sky Park included plans for sixty-five fly-in residences on one-acre lots powered completely from clean, solar energy. The Big Sky Guest Ranch was intended to function as a clubhouse for Skypark residents complete with an equestrian center, a small subsistence farm, pool and plenty of enriching recreational activities. 2012- At the end of 2011, the Zannon Family Foundation made a long-term investment in acquiring the New Cuyama Airport property with the vision of rehabilitating the site to be a low-cost resource for programs and organizations working to advance sustainable living practices and technologies. Plans began soon after towards developing a framework and organization to develop the space and coordinate with prospective programs and institutions. In 2014 Blue Sky Sustainable Living Center ("Blue Sky Center") received 501(c)(3) not-for-profit status, endeavoring to reclaim this property for the public good. At the end of a long, beautiful road into the mountains of Frasier Park! Next-door, an abandoned Boy Scouts property with hiking trails! And a seasonal stream flowing through! You turn in and off the main entrance you see your 5 foot tall fence the completely surrounds a small, tiny yellow colored cottage. Inside the fence, a private space, completely private, little messy, but forgiven because of the level of comfort the fire pit and Cottage gave me 😬🔥 inside, a magical world of relaxation and comfort! Rustic, but with everything you need! And the most comfortable bed and pillow pillows ever! Even the blankets were cushy and snuggly! The set up makes relaxation easy. And the kitchen has everything you need! And they even have food you can order! Love that! Took bread, farm fresh eggs, and a dozen monster size chocolate chip cookies home with me! They were delicious! It’s a chill spot. I wouldn’t stay here more than two nights with a young family. As for me, I was on a solo getaway to disconnect, unwind and reconnect with myself in the moment. This place was absolutely perfect for it! Also, you can walk around the farm and there’s so much beauty to it. So much cool stuff they’ve added, and then there’s animals! And don’t forget the surrounding mountains and the beautiful sunset 🥰

What a treat! We stopped here on our way from Berkeley to Joshua Tree (there are very few camping options mid way), and we were pleasantly surprised. Our 8 year old and 6 year old LOVED feeding the llamas and alpacas. In fact, it was one of their highlights of their Spring Break. For campers (we were in our van), there is a hammock, picnic table, fire put and grill.

The only thing I would criticize about this campsite for the directions found on Apple Maps directed us to the direct opposite side of the little town and we ended up driving into someone’s backyard, luckily though they provided some instructions on where to go, and we were able to figure it out in the dark, but if possible, please update whether it is everything else was perfect! I made a reservation late in the evening so I had to drive on a two way road (from Hwy 5) in the dark for about 60 miles, arriving at 9:30pm. A regretful thoughts kept coming up in my head “Why did I do this? Just because it was a few dollars cheaper?” When I got up in the morning, however, that regret completely vanished. It was a beautiful campground with all of the modern amenities such as toilet, shower, and even fully equipped cantina (kitchen) where I ended up cooking and eating while I enjoyed the cool breeze and beautiful mountain views in the distance. I had short conversations with some guests who stayed in the huts. Everyone seemed to have liked the experience. They were quite casual about checkin/checkout. I don’t know what time is the checkout but I think I left at 2pm. Thoroughly enjoyed it and I’ll definitely come back (next time for a longer stay.)

We were very fortunate to find Sanctuary Cielo! We have taken our children (4 and 2) camping many times over the years and so we have a sense of what we need to make it an awesome trip with little ones: a lot available to keep them busy, safe, access to some of the comforts of home and beautiful scenery. Sanctuary Cielo had of those things and more!
Amber and Gregory were great hosts and you can tell they take a lot of pride in their land and sharing it with others. There were so many special, curated spots all over their land and it was fun exploring them.
They also have pretty much everything you need for your adventure...I have way too much camping gear and found I left 90% of it packed in the vehicle. Plenty of places to sit and relax, a grill set-up to cook meals, refrigerator to store food, supplies in case you forgot something.
The location is great...we were able to play in the Santa Ynez river, visit Lake Cachuma and Solvang on this trip.
Would highly recommend and we hope to visit again soon!

I loved the landscaping. It was jaw dropping. The store had a great selection and the music on the weekend was a great plus. This is place is worth every penny.

This was our first stop on a road trip up the California coast. It was a little confusing because there was ROAD and a BLVD with the same name, but once we found the right place, it was easy to find Site 1. This is a great place to camp! There is cold water and a very nice shower cabin. We watched the sun set over the mountains while the river gurgled nearby. While there were other people in the neighboring sites, there was enough space for all. I appreciated that Vivian's husband came to check on us. I would definitely recommend this place to camp!

The dispersed camping at Blue Sky was nice. Lots of space to spread out and access to restrooms and showers was incredibly helpful. The facilities were clean and accessible all night. Take seriously their warning about neighborhood noise though; there were pretty frequent barking dogs not far away so earplugs are essential!

Extraordinary. More than I’d hoped for to be honest. Hookups for power and water are amazing to have at each site - beyond that the gift shop has actual good stuff like a mini sprouts grocery! and laundry on site is a HUGE bonus. The ocean access right across the road is amazing. And the nonstop sound of the ocean at the campsite is just divine. I extended my stay to be here for ten days and I’ll definitely be back again next spring. The road cycling out the door is world class and the hiking right next door on solstice canyon is magical. I can’t rave about this spot enough.

Weekend Trip to Blue Sky Center
I had another great stay at Blue Sky, this was my first time in one of the huts. They are super cozy, it got down to the high 30s low 40s overnight, but I stayed nice and warm thanks to the heated blanket & heater.
I had a delicious dinner at the Buckhorn, then back to the hut to relax. The sky was so dark at night, you could see so many stars!!
I drove through Carrizo Plains on the way in and saw Soda Lake and lots of flowers. I drove through Los Padres on the way home and spotted a condor, just a few minutes past the Bitter Creek National Refuge sign. What a trip.

Southern California
From Carpinteria, it's not far to Southern California, where campers can find quiet coastal communities and lively big cities. While the region is known for its beaches, it's equally fabulous for inland exploration, including Death Valley National Park and Joshua Tree National Park.
When to go
Carpinteria is a year-round destination, with pleasant, moderate weather throughout the year. If coming to surf, summer and fall are ideal, despite summertime getting major crowds. To see wildlife—notably sea and sea lions—come between December and May or visit when the tide is low, revealing tide pools full of colorful sea creatures.
