Four Acre Woods Campground

14 sites · Lodging, RVs, Tents4 acres · Deer Isle, ME
A beautiful island campground thickly forested with spruce, fir, and birch, Four Acre Woods was created over 60 years ago on Sunshine Island, Maine. Under the name Sunshine Campground, it hosted people from all over the world and delivered the spirit and essence of this ancient, abundant land that so many ancestors had roamed and celebrated before. It was open to the public through to the 90s, but then sat alone for 15 years, waiting for someone to revive it and bring it back to the world. Then one day, Caleb and Wolf met on a bus, heading south from Down East Maine, where they instantly connected and joined forces. They worked together redressing a home in Stonington for visitors to experience and became brothers while doing so. Eventually, the presence and opportunity of the campground caught their attention and after working out the technicalities, they worked together to bring this beautiful land and campground back to the people under its new life and name, Four Acre Woods. After opening on July 1st 2020, the land is finally back to sharing all of her beauty and spirit with the people. So, Welcome Home. Sincerely, - Four Acre Woods Caretakers

Camps of the Pioneers

Our property has a history detailed in the arrowheads and other Wabanaki artifacts found around the property. European settlers have also left clues behind of the shipbuilding industry and 1700's culture.Experience a bit of natural immersion and enjoy the endless opportunities for outdoor recreation while camping in the northern forests of Downeast Maine! We use our 6 acre property to focus on producing organically grown herbs, fruit, vegetables for local markets. We're finally making available the properties scenic brooks, forests and meadows to folks seeking to experience a truly unforgettable, countryside retreat. We’re just off the beaten path in an agricultural and fishing community on the Union River, 20 minutes drive from Acadia National Park and Mt. Desert Island. See what our other guests have had to say about their stays-“It’s an experience I would repeat with pleasure. Difficult to be short about my highlights: hearing the loon at night certainly, waking up with the quarter moon over my head, seeing the progression in changing colors of the leaves, the views from Mount Cadillac, and Beech Wood trail, Jordan Pond and the Bubbles,so many things really.” - Christine from Montpelier, France, Sept 2021."We were so at peace when we got here we just spent the rest of the day hanging at the yurt enjoying the peace and quiet today we are heading to the ocean!"- Jody from New Hampshire, July 2021."We could not have found a more idyllic place, plus it was our first experience in a yurt. We found your notes about Acadia super helpful and the yurt was just so beautiful and cozy. Having a hot bath and a little fire in the wood stove after a day of biking the Carriage Roads and swimming at Sand Beach could not have been more perfect. So glad we were at the yurt to enjoy the area and Acadia. We had an incredible stay and are hoping to come back next summer."- Jenn & Neil, August 2020.

9 Acre Woods

9 sites · RVs, Tents9 acres · Montville, ME
We are proud to share this piece of Montville Maine land, which was the original home of Haystack Mountain School of Arts in the 1950's, a renowned Art school, where potters, painters, woodworkers, and others would come spend summers in communal art studios to perfect their craft! It was the first Art school that taught Raku style pottery in the USA. Serindipidiously, it is now owned by Colette Shumate-Smith- a Raku artist and painter that has spent her life both learning and teaching her craft!   Located along State Rt 3, between Augusta and Belfast, you will drive through gorgeous rolling hills, and soak in some amazing views to get here!! Upon arrival you will notice the picturesque field that over looks a quaint mountain view from the valley! Sunsets are unbeatable each day, and each night you can fall asleep under a beautiful bright Milky Way!   Strap on your boots and take a little hike on the property to a waterfall *overlook* in the middle of the woods!      This pine woods property is magical on it's own, but in a perfect location for day trips to explore the area!  Check out all Midcoast Maine has to offer, whether you like a day of shopping and a fine meal- or to lose yourself for a day of hiking, biking, kayaking- whatever your pleasure!  9 acre woods is close to Lake st. The best camping near Lake St. George State Park guide

Overview

About

Calling all family campers! Lake St. George has something special for both bigs and littles. We’ll start with the big draw, Lake St. George, which is about as quintessential Maine as you can get. You’ve got resident loons, with their haunting laughter echoing across the lake, undeveloped islands for picnicking and exploring, and campsites that hug the shore, offering spectacular sunrises from the comfort of your sleeping bag. Parents will love the lifeguarded beach, play area, and picnic spots right on the water. Kids, well they’ll just love being in the water. This is the family vacation to write home about, load up the old canoe and a couple of fishing poles and start relaxing on Lake St. George.

Notable campgrounds

  • Shoreline Campsites: Wake up to the gentle lapping of waves with a stay at one of the park's coveted shoreline campsites.
  • Family Campsites: Ideal for groups, these sites offer ample space and proximity to park amenities for a comfortable stay.
  • Group Campsites: Perfect for larger gatherings, these sites provide the space needed for memorable outdoor bonding.

Tips for snagging a campsite

  • Book early: Reservations can fill up quickly, especially during peak season, so plan ahead to secure your spot.
  • Off-peak travel: Consider visiting during the shoulder seasons for better availability and a quieter experience.
  • Weekday stays: You'll find it easier to reserve a campsite for midweek dates when the park is less crowded.
  • Explore nearby camping options: If the park is full, look for nearby campgrounds to still enjoy the area's natural beauty.

When to go

The best time to visit Lake St. George State Park is during the summer months when the weather is warm and all facilities are open. However, for those seeking solitude, the off-season offers a peaceful retreat, albeit with cooler temperatures. The park is open from 9am to sunset, providing ample time for exploration.

Know before you go

  • Check for updates: Always verify access and safety information before your visit.
  • Fee collection: Be prepared to pay an entry fee year-round, either at the staffed booth or self-service station.
  • Wildlife awareness: Keep an eye out for the park's loons and be mindful of the browntail moth alert.
  • Accessibility: Visitor facilities are designed to accommodate a range of needs, ensuring everyone can enjoy the park.
  • Firewood policy: Help protect the park's forests by purchasing firewood locally instead of transporting it from afar.
