Sparrow Lake Camp

(126)
29km from Six Mile Lake Provincial Park · 4 sites · Tents · Severn Bridge, ON
Sparrow Lake Camp is situated on the southernmost tip of the majestic Canadian Shield.  The site is known to have been a campground for bands of the Huron people prior to the European intrusion.  It is considered probable that Samuel de Champlain, the first European to explore Huronia, spent a night on this site in the 17th Century. In 1892, what would become the west side of the current property was sold by pioneer Captain Thomas Stanton to Toronto's renowned Massey family to act as their summer resort.  The resort sported the main lodge, dining room, and cottages and was only accessible by train and steamer. From the onset, the Masseys used the site as a summer retreat for the Young Men's Bible League of the Central Methodist Church. Today, the property is a thriving summer camp that also offers overnight tent stays with stunning lake views.

Cedar Creek Forest Camping

99%
(268)
25km from Six Mile Lake Provincial Park · 11 sites · Tents, RVs, Lodging · Tay, ON
Welcome to Cedar Creek Forest Camping! Voted second best campsite in Canada in 2021 and ranked number 2 in Ontario in 2022. I have 97 acres of very private camping. The forest is a bird watcher’s and nature lover’s paradise. I have developed miles of flat groomed trails and a 3-acre pond (plus several bush ponds). The sites are spread around the pond and are close but not right beside it. There is an abundant amount of wildlife to explore: birds, reptiles, amphibians, fish, insects and mammals call this home. There is a small swimming hole on the island but otherwise the pond is full of aquatic life. The sites and trails are maintained all year long and the forest is quiet and beautiful. I have planted over 3000 trees with the help of the Severn Sound Environmental Association. The forest is registered as a managed woodlot with the province and habitat preservation/restoration is the priority goal. Please DO NOT bring firewood for your visit. I have large bags of cured firewood that was sustainable harvested from the forest available. Invasive insects and disease can be transferred from imported wood. Guests are welcome to quietly explore the forest trails but are asked to stay on the trail. Many birds and animals nest in the forest. My campsite is family-friendly (and pet-friendly), and 420 friendly too. Guests can easily drive up to and park at all campsites. My camp site is tolerant and respectful of all humans, animals and things. The Yurtle structures were built from Hemlock trees that were cut from this forest and processed into boards, then engineered into unique camping huts. Large windows capture the glory of the surrounding forest and sun sets, while wood stoves warm campers on those cold days/nights. Guests are asked to remove excessive garbage and recycling when possible. Thanks for viewing and visiting, cheers and peace, Dave

The best camping in Six Mile Lake Provincial Park, ON guide

Overview

About

Six Mile Lake may look familiar to campers, as this provincial park (less than two hours north of Toronto by road), had its landscapes immortalized by esteemed Canadian artist David Milne. Visitors can experience the landscapes that inspired him firsthand on the half-kilometre David Milne Trail. Those who crave a more “lively” experience might want to check out the one-kilometre Living Edge Trail (where beavers build their lodges) or the Marsh Trail, where moose are frequently spotted—just keep your distance and admire them from afar. If you’re craving relaxation, Six Mile Lake is home to three beaches, including a designated pet beach. Campers have seven campgrounds to choose from at Six Mile Lake Provincial Park.

Notable campgrounds

  • Best for new campers: Birch Campground is centrally located and close to the beach, playground, volleyball court, comfort station, and park store.
  • Best for pet owners: Cedar Campground is tiny, but its walk-in sites have the advantage of being close to the pet beach.
  • Best for hikers: Poplar Campground is adjacent to all three Six Mile Lake Provincial Park hiking routes.

Tips for snagging a campsite

  1. The Ontario provincial parks system allows reservations up to five months in advance. If you have a particular site in mind or you hope to travel on a busy weekend, it’s smart to book a spot well in advance.
  2. Reservations can be modified at the four-month mark, so if you missed out on the chance to book, you could grab one once some cancellations come in.
  3. Last-minute spots also sometimes become available around noon each day. Campers already on site who leave early receive a full refund if they cancel by noon, meaning folks on standby can nab these newly vacated spots.

When to go

Six Mile Lake Provincial Park is open from mid-May until mid-October. Like many provincial parks, Six Mile Lake bans alcohol on Victoria Day and for the 10 days preceding it. July and August are popular times, when park staff operate a discovery drop-in program for kids. Both Canada Day weekend (July 1) and the August Civic Holiday weekend (the first Monday of the month) are busy.

Know before you go

  • Six Mile Lake offers a free “learn to fish” program to introduce new anglers to the sport.
  • While you’re unlikely to see them, bears roam the region. Keep a clean campsite and lock up your food at night.
  • Canoes, kayaks, standup paddle boards, and pedal boats are available for rent at the park store in spring and fall, as well as at the rental building at Canoe Beach in summer.
