Sister Pine Organic Farm

5 sites ¡ Lodging, RVs, Tents150 acres ¡ Hortense, GA
South Georgia at its best! Down a dirt road through a rusty gate, big night skies and quiet you can feel. We have 150 acres out in the sticks with the Satilla River, Altamaha River, Okefenokee Swamp, Cumberland Island and the Golden Isles beaches nearby. This is a working small organic farm with lots of free range birds and rough edges so dogs need a leash 24/7 and no children under 12. Guests can stay private or share common spaces but either way a respectful, clean up after yourself, lets talk about traveling/rivers/farming attitude is expected. No politics. Simple screened kitchen, shared fire pit with free firewood, outdoor hot shower, pond with a dock and better than 2 miles of hiking trails make it work. Paddlers with their own boats can catch a shuttle to the Altamaha for $30. GPS can be tricky and guide you onto old logging roads that dead end into spooky swamps so follow our directions on Arrival instructions or you'll be gator bait! Come check us out Y'all!

LowBranch Farm

3 sites ¡ RVs, Tents10 acres ¡ Townsend, GA
Here at Low Branch Farm, we want you to experience the natural beauty of the area. This area is magical, as we back up to a tidal marsh, the Spanish moss blows in the wind of the tall oaks planted firmly in the ground, the pines create a sanctuary to the lightning bugs that show up at the beginning and end of summer. My husband and I are world travelers who enjoy meeting people and share stories. We have two sites where people can tent camp, both with firepits. We have a spot for your car/camper/RV. We do have two farm dogs and a cat, so if we approve your animals, please keep them on the leash at all times! We are currently working on building an outdoor flushing toilet and shower for our campers! We have four kayaks that are available upon request if you want to explore the last bit of the Sapelo River. There is alot to check out in this neck of the woods, but also several areas just to chill in nature on our property. We are about 15 minutes from the second oldest planned town in Georgia (Darien), and 45 minutes from Savannah.

The best camping near Fort McAllister State Park guide

Overview

About

While best-known for its Civil War connections, Fort McAllister State Park, which is nestled among giant oaks, Spanish moss and salt marsh on the banks of Ogeechee River, is a beautiful setting for fishing, hiking, biking and boating. There are more than four miles of varied and scenic hiking trails to explore by foot, as well as some designated biking trails. Paddlers can explore the river by canoe or kayak while anglers can enjoy fly fishing, bass fishing, and trout fishing. Fort McAllister State Park Campground has 67 campsites for tents, trailers and RVs, while backpackers can hike into the two designated backcountry sites.

Tips for snagging a campsite

  1. Bookings can easily be secured online or by phone, up to 13 months in advance.
  2. Campers wishing to use the backcountry sites should book well in advance: There are only two sites and they book up quickly.
  3. Any sites that have not been reserved are available on a first-come, first first-served basis.

When to go

The most popular time to visit is in spring and summer, so it’s a good idea to make reservations during that period. Summers in the area tend to get hot and humid (with temperatures typically in the low 90s) but the park has the advantage of water-based activities to keep you cool. Fort McAllister State Park is known for its educational programming, so check the calendar to see what’s on before planning a visit.

Know before you go

  • Bicycles are available to rent in the park, as are canoes, kayaks and paddleboards on a seasonal basis.
  • Free Wi-Fi is available in the park office and museum.
  • Pets are welcome, as long as they are kept on a leash.
  • Georgia law requires that anyone 16 and older have a fishing license
