But what options do you have if you want to explore a vibrant city like Melbourne. See a show, do some shopping, eat out at some of the World's greatest restaurants. Yes, we all should splurge every now and then even when on the road. Our property lies at the very start of the Yarra Valley. It is surrounded on three sides by the magnificent Helens Hill vineyard. In the Summer months you can watch the fruit come onto the vines and in the Winter the views open up to see the kangaroos bouncing though the rows and often silhouetted against the skyline sunsets. We are less than 5 minutes to Lilydale town center. Supermarkets, restaurants, service centers, parts stores, hardware are all on the doorstep, yet looking out over the vines you wouldn't know. Lilydale is 38 kms from Melbourne CBD and there is a train station with ample day parking making it super easy to explore the heart of Melbourne and return 'home' to your country retreat for the night. Myki cards available on site FOC. There is a dump point only 3kms away at a local caravan park for those that need it and at our property water can be available to fill your tanks if needed for a small donation. There is no water or power connection on the sites but you can release your grey water to nourish the grass. Lilydale has a large laundromat available to you. We have a beautiful covered eating area with BBQ available so if the weather turns inclement you can still eat out yet under cover. All campers must be 100% self contained. These are remote sites with no connections and there are no toilet facilities available. We have restricted our area to a maximum of 6 sites to ensure that everyone has their space. Sites are not marked and locations will be on a first booked basis. Owners will direct you to your areas. The area is beautifully flat and does absorb water well but care must be taken to not tear it up after heavy rains. Please seek assistance from owners rather than tearing up the grass as a tractor is available. We can cater for large sized vans and even large motorhomes. Tents are welcome. The property is pet friendly but not fully fenced so your furry friends would need to be on lead. We have our own dogs on the property. Hipcamp being USA based describes the sites and vehicles in USA terms and lengths. There is no way to alter this but please be aware. We cater for Aussie sized caravans and 4wd vehicles. 14 or 15m long all up, no problem. Just in a 4x4 with roof top tent and awning, we have you covered. Cruising the country in a Commodore with a pop top, all good here. Please be aware that we do share a boundary with a working vineyard and they do occasionally have a tractor or crew out in the vines doing some work. There can be a bit of farm machinery work every now and then but this is beyond our control and generally very minimal as vines dont take much looking after unless its harvest night.

Choose from 3 carefully selected camp sites and set up base camp to enjoy day trips exploring the local wineries, such as del Rios, walking and cycling trails of the You Yangs State Park, and Serendip Wildlife Sanctuary, or as a convenient overnight stop on your way to explore the Great Ocean Road The camping area is easily accessed from maintained roads, where guests can drive in and park on the spacious lower paddock (no reversing or 3-point-turns necessary). The camping space is attractive with views north and west; good sunsets. There was afternoon shade available next to a gum tree. Both Shelly and Craig were warm hosts, friendly and supportive. It is close to the Princes Highway that it is easy to access. The camping block has a gentle slope and the grass is cut. We would recommend this to any campers and would gladly return. We had a fantastic overnight stay at Cannavale Farm Stay and couldn’t fault it. The site itself was spacious, grassy and easy to access, with plenty of room to get set up comfortably. It felt nicely spread out and private, with beautiful open views across the surrounding farmland. Super peaceful and quiet, especially in the evening. The farm setting is lovely. Waking up to the sounds of cattle and the countryside was a real highlight and exactly what we were looking for in a farm stay. It’s close enough to town to be convenient, but once you’re there it really feels like a proper escape. Hosts were welcoming and the property is well maintained. If you’re self-contained and after a relaxed, no-fuss farm stay with space, views and a calm rural vibe, this place is a great option. We’d happily stay again and recommend it to others.

What a great dog friendly campsite! Highly recommend site 1 which has an amazing outlook to the vineyard. This is a great location to explore the Yarra Valley with Lilydale only a short drive away. My partner and I only stayed one night in our swag but had such a lovely time. It was great meeting the family and all the critters that call this island in the trees home. The property is easy to find and is in a great location to explore the surrounds. The two large sites spaced amongst the flowers were tidy and easy to access. Large fire pits great for a group to camp around in the cooler months. The proteas were out in all their glory and the ones we chose to take home made it all the way back to QLD and are still looking stunning weeks later! Rob has an amazing property surrounded by natural bushland. Making it feel remote whilst still only being 10km's from the freeway. The infrastructure already available at Creek Camp was so thoughtfully laid out such as the lighting in the trees, the deck overhanging the forest, festoons draped beautifully and the outdoor cover of the wonder little shed. Rob and family were a delight to meet and be around, very thoughtful offerings and care managing the land and that your group will have the best time possible.

Frankston

This area is prime for family camping, serving as a home base for exploring the region. Expect campsites and holiday parks offering leafy tent sites and shaded caravan sites with access to camp kitchens, free wifi, and even swimming pools.

Sorrento and Portsea

At the far western reaches of the Mornington Peninsula, Sorrento and Portsea are the favoured weekend getaway hotspots for Melbournians. The region is dotted with vineyards and wineries, with restaurants and cafes in abundance. Portsea Pier is a timber jetty jutting out into the bay providing a safe swimming enclosure with the jetty a popular spot for walking and fishing.

Hastings

Overlooking the protected waterway of Western Port and French Island, Hastings is great for holidaymakers with a keen interest in fishing or boating ,or for surfing the beaches of Mornington Peninsula’s south coast. When to go

Summer is peak season in Victoria with campsites, caravan parks, and holiday parks often booked well ahead during holidays, especially Christmas and Easter. Mornington and surrounds are a popular weekend getaway spot for Melbournians year-round, so holiday parks and campsites are usually quieter during the week. If you’re into cosy winter escapes, Mornington Peninsula has plenty to offer, especially for kite surfers, boaties, and fishermen who can launch small boats from boat ramps strung along Port Phillip Bay.

Know before you go

Caravan sites and holiday parks are typically set either inland or along Port Phillip Bay from Mornington to Rosebud, Rye, Sorrento and Hastings.
Foreshore camping sites are available from October to April and are in high demand—check Mornington Peninsula Shire website to find out when bookings open at Rosebud, Rye, and Sorrento. Council-run campsites have bathrooms as well as laundries, BBQs, and powered and non-powered sites.
A passenger-carrying car ferry links east and west coasts of Port Phillip Bay, making it possible to do a circumnavigation of the bay from Melbourne.
Mornington Peninsula has two coastlines with wildly different shores: calm and protected on the Port Phillip Bay northern side, and beaches exposed to Bass Strait with wild surf and breakers on the southern side.
Snorkel or scuba dive from the beach at Port Phillip Heads Marine National Park to see dolphins, seals, and weedy sea dragons.
