As New South Wales’ historic cement-making centre, Portland boasts the title of “The Town that Built Sydney” (and likely many more of the state’s cities, too). Today, traces of Portland’s 19th-century heritage are confined to the Signs of Yesteryear that you’ll see displayed along Wolgan Street, and the quirky artworks are one of the town’s biggest attractions. But you probably won’t spend much time in the town itself, anyway. Surrounded by miles of nature reserves, conservation areas, and lakes, Portland has great bushwalking, birdwalking, and fishing right on its doorstep. Drive a little bit further, and you can explore the hiking trails and glow worm tunnels of Wollemi National Park or admire the dramatic rocks and sweeping valleys of Blue Mountains National Park. Campers have plenty of options, too, including simple national park campgrounds, caravan or tourist parks with full amenities, or rural Hipcamps on local farms.

Rocklee is on Wiradjuri land, a short drive from Capertee, surrounded by Gardens of Stone and Capertee national parks and the Mugii Murrum-ban State Conservation Area. Rocklee is 2.5 hours from Sydney and Dubbo, and a short drive to swimming at Turon and Coorongooba National Parks, sightseeing at Glen Davis, bird watching near Glen Alice and the terrific cafe ‘From the Paddock’. Access is 4wd only. (We’re serious!) Our road has ‘roll overs’, rocks and a couple of tight turns on large gradients so you need a vehicle with 20cm+ clearance. If you are towing a camper trailer, you need a good 4wd engine to get back up the hill confidently. Each campsite is a VERY long way from other sites - usually about 800m. Rocklee has a mix of no-longer used paddocks and about 950 acres of untouched bush. You will arrive through the conservation area, which has beautiful pagodas and endless bushwalks. Rocklee is a good site for star gazing. Hipcampers can choose from plenty of space where they'd like to set up camp. Please be careful as some paddocks are overgrown, fences have come down and there are lots of wombat holes, so drive slowly and be careful. There are no amenities here, campers need to be self contained and leave no trace. This means you need to bring water, use existing fireplaces and take your rubbish, recycling and compost with you. (You need to bring water from home or elsewhere on the way. Please note you cannot fill up free tap water at Capertee - either at the BP, the picnic area or the pub. It just doesn’t rain enough to fill up the tanks. Sorry!)

The Hartley Vale Garlic Farm was established in 2018 as an organic garlic farm now owned by James and Michelle and their two children. The farm features a hempcrete building named 'The Stinking Rose' used for drying and curing garlic, that also acts as a big room for garlic feasts during planting (March, April and May each year). The building also houses toilet and shower facilities for guests when camping on site. On some evenings, the sky puts on a real show of golden sun rays with pink, purple and blue clouds while swallows flit across the garden beds catching moths. Also please note that due the closure of the Great Western Highway there is currently an increase in traffic volume going past our property. Our usually quite nights are not as quiet. The campers I have had since this has happened did not seem to be too impacted by it, but if you are wanting complete quietness then maybe wait until the Highway is re-opened. Our property is located in the Blue Mountains, nestled right in the middle of the national park and all that the Blue Mountains bush has to offer. Gums, ferns, fresh air and swimming holes. I only allow one group to camp at any one time per site. Other groups will be well away from you. However the dam is available for everyone to use. I adjust each booking with each group depending on size of the group and time of year. I also hold large events so will book out the entire site for large groups. Just a short drive from Sydney (1 ½ hours from Parramatta) but a world away with its ancient forests and meandering pathways. All photos are from the site or within a 2km walk of the camping site in National Park or reserve. Please note that the canyon photos are from a spot that is very difficult to get to. I welcome self-contained campers with your own camping toilet/shower, and drinking water. However there are facilities on site for smaller groups at an extra cost. The property offers a number of sites that can accommodate various group numbers. Please message me if you're interested in booking one or more listings for your special get together. Dogs are welcome as long as they are friendly, but no cats please. Also please be aware that we are surrounded by nature and part of nature are the snakes and ticks. - we need to keep this environment for the wildlife. Please take all your belongings and rubbish with you when you leave. Leave it better than as you found it. Please be aware that due to our proximity to the road and rail that at times you will hear some traffic noise. But most times it is very quiet except for the frogs.

The Hideaway Oberon is a wonderful place to disconnect without letting go of too many creature comforts. Would highly recommend for all, especially dog owners.

Weekend Trip to Brazenhead - One Great Place

We only stayed one night at Brazenhead, mainly to get the kids out for a night and test out our new diesel heater, but we’ll definitely be back! Being only about 20 minutes from home made it the perfect little getaway. We stayed at Site 3, which was perfectly flat, really easy to drive into and set up, and we didn’t even need to unhitch the van. There were some nice trees nearby and a great little fire pit area already set up. Jayne had even left some firewood next to the fire pit for us when we arrived, which was a really nice touch. The river was flowing and only a stone’s throw from camp, so there was plenty for the kids to explore. Our 4 year old brought his little ebike and had a ball riding around with how flat and open the area is. We also saw plenty of kangaroos and woke up to the kookaburras in the morning exactly what you want from a night away. Great spot for a small family like ours, but it would also be perfect with a bigger group. Grab a few sites together, line the vans up and you’d have a great setup for a couple of nights around the fire. Easy access, peaceful, kid friendly and close enough for a quick getaway. We’ll definitely be back.

Weekend Trip to Hartley Vale Garlic Farm

Directions were a bit confusing with recent road closures in the area, but the site was great- beautiful scenery and Michelle was super helpful when we ran out of water. Was nice to just enjoy a campfire and some quiet for a couple of days with our fam and doggy. We also loved it was close to Hartley and Zigzag.

2 nights at Aurora-Exclusive Blue Mountains

We had an amazing stay at Aurora Exclusive. The campsite was peaceful, spacious, and offered stunning views of the Blue Mountains. It was the perfect place for off-grid camping, with plenty of privacy and a relaxing atmosphere. The campfire area was excellent, and waking up to the beautiful sunrise was unforgettable. The host was friendly, welcoming, and provided clear instructions. We highly recommend this campsite to anyone looking for a quiet escape into nature. We'll definitely be back!

Weekend Trip to Farm Stay "Como Valley"@ Ben Bullen

If youre looking for a camp site that has if all then look no further. We had an amazing time at Como Valley, Kellie is a great host and was great with communication. These are the kinds of hipcamp sites that I love when youre far away from people amongst nature, and the only thing you can hear is the wombats foraging for food and crazy possums in the trees. The fresh water creek that runs through the property is the cherry on the cake, crystal clear. You will need a 4wd to get to the sites as youll be crossing a few creeks and require ground clearance from dirt road. There is plenty of firewood about from fallen trees Thanks Kellie we'll be back again!

2 nights at Raglan Ranch

We were lucky to be the only ones there. Great place to base yourself to do a few things in the area. Fire pits provided were great. Rubbish bin provided which was awesome. Close to railway line but did not seem to hear too many trains. Slept well. Dog friendly. Fantastic communication by Kurt & Megan. Thanks for opening up your space for us. 🐾

Brazenhead at Peel was lovely clean and tidy place to stay. Will go back when it's warmer and can sit in the water with a nice drink. Fire pit was great plenty of wood from the owners doing work on the property. Beautiful peaceful place

Weekend Trip to Peronne Adventure Camping

Had a great stay here in the middle of Winter. The one site serenity plus a quick dip in the stream was a perfect way to reset the system whilst enjoy the views of the rolling hills in front of the campfire. I didn't get the chance to explore the hiking trails around the property this time, but that's just another reason to come back. I've already saved this place as a favourite and will definitely be returning to experience more of what the property has to offer.
